Release Team 2010

As posted in the new PortableApps.com Status Update: "I'd like to finalize a new release team and get working on a way to collaborate and get things moving. The goal will be to have a set group of people who can 'sign off' on apps going from dev test to pre-release to final moving forward. Tools-wise, we can do a custom forum, email list, wiki page, IRC and/or Drupal's issue tracker to ensure that things move forward and don't get left behind."

I'm thinking we'll need some basic requirements like dev abilities or test familiarity with tools like Regshot. And some kind of overall time commitment like 'I'll be involved for at least 6 months' and 'I can usually give you a X hours a week'. Any thoughts?

As you and I discussed

As you and I discussed before, I think setting up a tracker or some sort, trac or otherwise, so that things can be setup and easily kept track of. I'd be more than willing to help with the setup/management/etc, and help get things moving. It's hard to do it without having some type of true organization. So I say setup a tracker and maybe find a way to vote up apps that think they're ready to go to PR from DT so it's easy to keep track of, and the rest should take care of itself.

Miscellaneous thoughts

I think the format of getting final notes sorted out that we got worked out last time should work well - https://portableapps.com/development/test/status. I'd just like to suggest one slight change to it, and that is that the test date be added somewhere. And I suppose we could also put in a "PAL" or "custom" label in the Code item.

Another idea's just occurred to me - set up several packages, some with few or no issues and some with quite a few (or select a few existing ones) and get RT candidates to test it and email their report privately so you can see how well they're checking it off. We don't want to compromise the quality of our releases by having a Release Team which doesn't find all issues.

I think the problem with "I can usually give you X hours a week" is that for Uni students in particular the time can really be greatly in flux.

I spend some (possibly too large) number of hours at PortableApps.com or working on PortableApps.com software, but in general I'm working on other things; to test software just tends to be something that is secondary, often. If we got presented with a list of apps that we want tested, then I could do it a lot better. There's got to be some way of deciding what needs doing.

yes

"uni students"..."time in flux" Thats my problem too. Having a list with apps that need work where people can pick one and test it would be cool. But as Chris said, someone would have to create a prioritized list.

can you put lines to seprate each app?

Kinda makes it hard to read without knowing where on app ends and the other begins... I like the idea though.

well lines or hightlighting

you know like the ones on "recent post" they alternate grey-white. It takes me a while to see where one app ends and the next starts

It does have the zebra striping.

Mine does, but...

only after I allow PA.c in NoScript...

Right

The zebra striping is done via Javascript. If you disable it, you won't get zebra striping or the ability to sort by columns on the Test releases page either.

Testing apps

As I'm having a bit of extra spare time lately, and because I find it pretty disappointing that this release team is not happening.

I finally decided to commit myself to testing apps, I can commit myself to 5 hours a week (what would probably be 2 apps a week) for at least 6 months, and if I enjoy it, much longer. Wink

I know you want to set up a 'release team and get working on a way to collaborate and get things moving' first, but till that's done maybe I could already start on testing for the time being.

In my opinion there are to little apps in the following categories:
* Accessibility
* Education
* Graphics & Pictures
* Security

I thought to start in Apps Ready For Official Release, Post Here from top to bottom while keeping an eye on the specific categories. But realized that most of the comments are over a year old.

I know that Chris is actively testing atm, so maybe this could finally be the start of a (small) release team !

Any suggestions/ideas ?

Thanx

nice

Although I dont want to speak for them, I know that Chris and Zach Thibeau are also testing apps. Zach even started a new list in the devtest status page. I too have a list of apps I'd like to have a closer look at so maybe we could all (and whoever else wants to test) get access to said page to have our results in one place.

My list includes OpenYahtzee, EarthClock, BestPractice, Fotografix, Icebreaker, Marble, MuseScore, PoEdit, Tipp10, Wormux, WinDjView, UltraStar Deluxe. I know games dominate the list but...I like them Smile

I'm going to update Wormux

I'm going to update Wormux Portable with XML support soon, so as soon as I do test away. Smile

I wish I had more time to put forth for testing, but I only seem to have time to update my own apps and the outdated apps thread. We'll see how things go next quarter.

Not top to bottom

I don't think that top to bottom is a good idea - unless you're going to request updates in all of those threads. Most of them are either outdated apps or outdated against PAF specs and current best practices (i.e. using PAL). I think starting towards the end would probably get better and more ready apps.

@John T. Haller

Since I applied to be an official app tester, could you add me to list of people who can edit https://portableapps.com/development/test/status ?

P.s.: Simeon is requesting the same here.

We are both (I guess) very eager to start testing apps Smile

ok

remember when I posted on that really outdated thread along time ago? Yeah, I thought that was this thread (perhaps the other one should be locked?).

I think X hours a week seems too much, perhaps V will be easier for me (we are using roman numerals, right? Blum )

Can I submit my slew of 2.5 dozen apps? A lot of them, though, currently categorized as utilities, I think can be in a new category called "Desktop Enhancements." WinFlip, Yod'm 3D, DeskHedron, WinEyes (either or both), could all start the category off...

I'll try to be involved as long as I'm available (like during finals week, I might not be able to, nor in the summer, with limited internet access.)

Not Literal

I think "X" is an unspecified variable in this case, rather than 10, but I could be wrong. Wink

Wait, were you kidding? It's that whole Internets-loss-of-tone issue. Pardon

lol

I thought the "tongue sticking out" was enough.

For those that don't know roman numerals, the "V" means 5.

Why ain't you joining the team?

EDIT: Can my initials be PI?
