Oyster has a point, Ryan. That link is a big :?.

My advice for anyone looking for any program that will not be developed here: remember that Google is your friend. *cough*Torrents!*cough* And try to understand that there are some programs that can not be made portable by any means...

O.o

PA.com (this site) only deals with open source programs. Not closed source programs.

Not everyone in the world follows this model, though. Some people make (illegal) portable versions of closed source/commercial programs. Such as Picasa.

Wouldn't it only be illegal to distribute them? (Unless they're pirated, in which it's illegal either way :p)

Correct

Yet lots of people come here and ask. Over and over we tell them nope, not gonna happen. I am simply saying they are "barking up the wrong tree" here. They need to look elsewhere. Smile

Illegal Links

The post in question linked to a modified package of Winamp... the distribution of which is illegal under US and International copyright law.

It's dead easy

You can't modify software that you don't own and redistribute it without permission. It's as easy as that. Open source licenses give you that permission. Non-open source license don't (at least 99.9% of them). So, unless you have permission from the copyright-holder, it's illegal.

Life

Just like many things in life.

Just because you can do something does not make it right or legal.

And as John said, there are laws about software which you will not find simple links too here.

John, The problem with common sense these days is that it is not too common.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_portable_software

If they are open source or GPLed then you can make them portable, else you have to either be the developer, or have explicit permission to do so.

So a list wouldn't help, because most people know whether they are a developer or not, and they know whether a dev has given them permission to redistribute their work.

Anything GPLed or OSS normally says very prominently, so there is no need to list them either.

So that's why people think a list is a pointless idea. This isn't even mentioning the fact that their are literally millions of applications.

There are lists of existing portable software all over the net, for instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_portable_software.

Can you

understand our point?

  1. Too many apps to list
  2. A list already exists
  3. Portable Apps could get into legal difficulties if we even said where to get illegal apps from

Portable Apps.com

This is PortableApps.com where John Haller and a number of other developers have modified and redistributed free open source programs so that they can be transported on removable media (ie, portable).

It is NOT a source for every portable application in the world and not a source for a listing of every application that is on the open or closed source market and whether they are possible to make portable. Ryan gave you a very good source for some portable apps that are available.

If YOU wanted to so the research and create your own list OR even add to the wiki that Ryan mentioned then by all means do so. I don't understand the anger over why SOMEONE at PortableApps.com does not have a universal list of apps that are or are not available to be portable.

A list of 3rd-party portable apps would be good

I think it would be a good idea to have a list of popular 3rd-party (legal) portable apps, as it would save hunting all over the forums, and also stop some of the "is this portable?" questions. However, I'm sure John has enough on his plate at the moment without having to maintain that as well as everything else he's doing...

becuz...

In case you haven't heard it, "common sense" isn't all that common...

And, it's getting less common year by year, yielding multi-$$$ judgements against fast-food chains due to some idiot gramma who don't know that coffee is *s'posed to be* HOT (and the like), and courts/judges who aren't familiar with the term "rez ipsa loquitur"

(IOW, they ain't familiar with the concept of criminal stupidity...)
