I'm unable to get GIMP to recognize any image file format other than its own .XCF format. Any way I try to open an image file (file open dialog, drag and drop, set GIMP to be default editor, etc.), GIMP simply responds with an "Unknown file type" error. Image files other than .XCF don't appear in the file open dialog unless the "All Files" option is selected, and even then GIMP can't generate thumbnail previews of them.
I've checked the preferences to make sure GIMP is pointed at the correct plug-ins directory (D:\\PortableApps\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins, in my case) for the file format translators, but everything looks fine. Am I missing something?

It works just fine here. All images should be the default and all show up for me as expected. No previews are created until you click to create them in the right pane as expected. And the images open up fine in GIMP when I click on them.
I would suggest a fresh install to ensure you have no corruption anywhere or corrupted settings. If that fails, please report back more information like your operating system, antivirus, software firewall, etc. Also make sure your antivirus isn't being 'helpful' and automatically deleting stuff.

Had Rev 3 installed. Tried some scanning. Suddenly twain-plugin.exe crashed. From that on also the png import plugin crashed.
Reinstall...
Now no plugin crashs, but plugin rescanning during every startup and no more file types than xcf.
Changed to Rev 4. Same Problem.
Same folder works in fresh VM without any problems, even scanning works again.
VERY strange behaviour... Never seen before. There must remain something very strange inside the registry or somewhere else.
Maybe you'll find a quick solution.

A reinstall doesn't reset your settings unless you fully delete the GIMPPortable directory. Nothing is left behind in the registry or app data.

I've tried a fresh install (manually deleted GIMP's folder in the PortableApps directory and reinstalled using the PortableApps Directory installer) with the same results.
I'm running this on my work machine:
I can't do anything about the firewall, antivirus, Bit9, or the lack of admin rights. It's pretty much your standard high-end corporate network environment.
If you have to manually approve each plugin, I'd wager they won't end up loading correctly. As GIMP uses plugins for every single file type, that would likely be your issue.

Bit9 approvals are a one-time issue to teach the program that the file access is legitimate, so I don't see how it would impact GIMP when running it again later. I'll be the first to admit, however, that with 400-odd approvals, I could have screwed one up despite the care I was taking not to. Does GIMP store a more detailed error log somewhere, so I can see if some dependency is failing to load or run?
You could check in GIMPPortable\App\gimp\bin or somewhere in data. You can also check the error console. If you don't mind storing settings locally (just foe now), you can run GIMP directly in that bin directory to ensure it isn't an issue with the portablization then later delete the .gimp directory in USERPROFILE.

Looks like something (Bit9?) is interfering with the plugins loading. Launching GIMP directly from GIMPPortable\App\gimp\bin\gimp-2.8.exe generates hundreds of "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)" errors, each referring to a specific plugin. This doesn't occur when launching GIMPPortable.exe, however, and GIMP itself loads and runs either way.
The GIMP error console is pretty useless for this, though. For example, there's no detail on why an image file won't open, only "Opening '<path to file>' failed: Unknown file type".
It would seem then that Bit9 simply won't let it properly run. As such a specific (and rare) issue, it's not something we can fix from our end.

thanks for your efforts. I've tried using Rev 4 again and have had a Windows restart since my last try. Now it worked. Maybe there was something strange left in memory which led to the mysterious behaviour. I will keep this problem in mind, maybe it can be reproduced in some time. The problem had been there after a problem with the scanning plugin - maybe this crash had changed something temporarily...
Other question: How does Portable Apps earn its money?

xxxx.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point gzdirect could not be located in the dynamic link library zlib1.dll.
The problem seems to be an older zlib1.dll in the path.
Copied C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\zlib1.dll
to
C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\

For anyone affected, could you please try editing the GIMPPortable.ini file within GIMPPortable\App\AppInfo\Launcher. In the [Environment] section, change the PATH= line to read:
PATH=%PAL:AppDir%\gimp\bin;%PAL:AppDir%\GIMP\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins;%PATH%;
If it still doesn't work, you can try this:
PATH=%PAL:AppDir%\gimp\bin;%PAL:AppDir%\GIMP\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins;

Fresh install of GimpPortable.
Neither change to the GIMPPortable.ini file works, I have to move the zlib1.dll file to the plugin directory.
Doesn't make sense.

I tried the same procedure:
No change, so I reverted back to the original GIMPPortable.ini file and went to check the modification dates of zlib1.dll in \GIMPPortable\App\gimp\bin and \GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins. I discovered that zlib1.dll wasn't installed in the plugin directory at all! Putting a copy of it in the plugin directory solved the problem for me as well.
Please try this new GIMP Portable 2.80 Rev 5 Dev Test 1 build to see if this works for you:

This should be fixed for the small subset of users affected in today's 2.8.2 release. I did a combination of internal PATH adjustments and duplicating the zlib1.dll file to ensure it should work on most machines, even ones where PATH variable adjustments internal to a single app and anything it launches don't work.

Then it would appear something else is up with your PC as the fixes used by others above that worked for them are all incorporated in the 2.8.2 release. Please post a new bug (just a forum post with [Bug] as the start of the title) with the exact error you see, your operating system version, full path to the install, whether it was a fresh install or an upgrade, anything else you can think of that is running and may interfere (antivirus, etc) and anything else you think of. Post that right here in the GIMP Support forum and we'll get starting on troubleshooting your issue.
