XMPlay

I use XMPlay which is fully portable: http://support.xmplay.com/index.php
The download doesn't include the FLAC decoder. However, it, and many other decoders, can be got here: http://support.xmplay.com/files.php?id=12
Besides those more commonly used decoders others are available from other areas of the XMPlay website.
There are also a good number of skins for it, if you don't like the default skin: http://support.xmplay.com/files.php?id=10
Personally I like the iXMPlay skin. It's big and good sized text for reading the playlist: http://support.xmplay.com/files_view.php?file_id=334

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Should have added for what to do with the FLAC plugin decoder once you downloaded it see the guides on this webpage: http://support.xmplay.com/article.php?id=1

Instead of the base app

Instead of the base app itself, you could also use the PortableApps Version here:

What is the Advantage of a PortableApps Package of XMPlay?

Sorry, I didn't know that PortableApps did a package of XMPlay. I've been using XMPlay for many years and have always got it from source. Also I have to go to the source to get the plugins for various things that can be done with XMPlay. Have to go there for skins too. And to read some of the basic documents on how to get started with using XMPlay.

I've now downloaded and tried XMPlayPortable and have to say that this is one of the packages produced by PortableApps that, as far as I can see, bring no advantage at all to it being packaged as a PortableApp. I suppose the caveat to that is if you're using PortableApps Platform for your PortableApps programs -- you get automatic updates as part of the Platform's functionality. I don't use PortableApps Platform, prefer Quick Cliq for dealing with portables, so I wouldn't need PortableApps XMPlay to work with the Platform.

As it stands the source download of XMPlay already is portable. The only thing a user needs to do to integrate it with the wider system is to set the file associations in the Options and Stuff > Integration settings. Of course, as far as playback is concerned, to get the associations to work you need to be sure that you have the appropriate plugins 'installed'.

Also should have mentioned in my original post that XMPlay also has a forum. Can be accessed via this route: https://www.un4seen.com/

Automatic Updates, Backups, Full Portability

It's mainly for automatic updates and backups via the platform's integrated backup. Though you also get improved portability as the built-in launcher adjusts paths within XMPlay's library and default playlist that can break as you move PCs. If you don't move PCs then portability doesn't matter in this respect.

Pro Tip: Even if you don't use the PortableApps.com Platform's menu, you can use a third party menu in conjunction with it. Use the platform to install/update apps and then close it and use your third party menu of choice.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Fair Points

Okay John, you make fair points. I might test out your "Pro Tip" in the future, many thanks.
