PortableApps.com is proud to announce the PortableApps.com Platform 28.0 release. This version introduces automatic OS compatibility filtering of apps so users won't accidentally download an app that doesn't run on their version of Windows and adds legacy packages for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10 32-bit. Read on for all the details...(permalink)
Existing Platform users can automatically update by clicking Help - Check for Updates. A small quick-install patch will be downloaded and applied.
New in 28.0
This release allows the PA.c Platform to automatically filter out incompatible apps within the app store. As apps drop support for older versions of Windows and some move to 64-bit only releases, allowing users to be able to easily gain access to compatible apps for their setup gets more important. It also introduces legacy packages of some of your favorite apps. Now, a user on Windows 7 won't see an app that only supports Windows 10 and later but will see a legacy package of that same app that does work for them. Similarly, a user on Windows 10 32-bit won't see an app that only supports 64-bit but will see a legacy package of that app from its last 32-bit release. Of course, users can still enable 'Advanced Apps' in options and see all releases if they'd like. A small string change in Options accompanies this update as well. Full details are in the PortableApps.com Platform changelog.
Platform Features
As always, the PortableApps.com Platform is packed with great features like:
- Automatic App Closing - Closing down and getting going is easier than ever with the platform automatically (and safely) closing your running portable apps and letting you know which ones need to be closed before you eject and finish syncing your cloud drive.
- Awesome Themes - The modern default theme matches well with Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. Plus all your favorite classic themes are included.
- Cascading Tray App Menu - Get quick access to all your apps with a right click in the system tray
- Always-Ready Search - The app search box is always visible and ready by default, so you can open the platform - possibly with the CTRL-ALT-SPACE hotkey - and just start typing to launch your favorite app. You can even search in app descriptions if you'd like by ticking a box in Options
- Proxy Support - The connections tab in Options lets you automatically or manually configure the platform to work with your internet proxy
- Full Featured Installer - The Platform installer can detect and install to your portable devices, synced cloud directories, local machine, and more
- Fast Updater / App Store - Quickly check for updates to your existing apps and find new ones by name, category, release date, and more
- Eject or Power Off - For local users, the eject button automatically switches to a shutdown/restart/log off button, bringing up the Windows prompt to select your choice. You can also right-click on the button to select to show either eject or shutdown/restart/log off.
- Portable Fonts - Take all your fonts with you and use them in all your portable apps
- Organize Your Apps Your Way - Use the default of favorites and most used apps with all apps by category on the second page or switch it up by selecting alphabetical apps, categories and favorites by default, and other options
- All the fixes and features are details in the PortableApps.com Platform Changelog

New Legacy Packages
To go along with the new automatic OS compatibility filtering, I've added multiple legacy packages of apps to the app store. More will be coming over the next week along with adding app compatibility details to lots more apps to filter them out on incompatible versions of Windows. You can suggest legacy versions and track progress in the Windows XP/Vista/7/8 Compatible App Packages forum thread.
version no error?
Ver 28 has old version info in appinfo.ini,
[Version]
PackageVersion=27.0.1.0
DisplayVersion=27.0.1
It runs the what's new info, but then writes to PortableAppsMenu.ini,
LastVersion=228.0.0.0
Which probably means it won't detect another new version until version 229?
Edit:
Never mind, it checks for != scenario.
