Sort options wrong

Your category sort descriptions are wrong, the Z-A indicates a reverse sort which is not the case, the sort is alphabetical A-Z but the categories are at the bottom.

Also, Johns Statement zur

darum gehst gar nich

Das is nich der punkt.
Das is ansichtssache:
Und die Rechtschreibfehler habich gefunden denk ich,
mich stört dass man das hätte auch per email klären können ohne das forum voll zu spammen.
Und ja ich hab die Microsoft übersetzung genommen weil sie sinn ergab.
Hier durchsuchen is genauso unsinn.

so if someone got en idea to improve it then
he can mail or simply ask for mail
so the other ones can discuss it together without the whole
public readers will notice.

and of course i always added to my translation an thx to the guys helped me out.
therefore i dont understand why this have happened.

but here we go again Biggrin

External apps path

Great stuff xrxca! The day when I can dump ASuite and have just one menu for my portable apps approaches.

I note that you are storing the absolute path in the .pafdata file. This won't work for me... I need relative paths as I tried to explain in https://portableapps.com/node/8520#comment-45378.

Can you allow the links to be relative to the PortableAppsMenu folder like ASuite and PStart can?

Cheers, Roger

Misinterpreted

the last message, I was thinking just sorting was an issue, but it's all paths stored. This is changed in R28, all stored paths are now relative. I've also fixed a couple minor bugs I found while changing that.

Wow! That was quick, thanks very much.

Now you've done "Add other Apps" with relative paths, where on your priority list is adding notes for each app as we discussed in https://portableapps.com/node/8457#comment-44546, 7 & 8?

I am starting to plan moving all my links from ASuite... I presume you won't be coding an import links from ASuite/PStart?

No import

Nope, too much of a one time thing.
R28 will be out in a couple hours, (found a couple other bugs in it that I've fixed)

I automate a lot of my release routine and am updating that script at the moment.

Just playing with it in my code at the moment, to decide how/when it'll get done...

Would you want the Notes displayed in the popup hint?

I would prefer a properties

I would prefer a properties option on the end of the right click menu for each app, which would allow the Notes to be displayed and anything else that was added in the future.

Edit: thinking more about it perhaps it would be nice to show a few lines of the note in the popup hint

After an experiment

Putting notes into the hint would be fine except when saved to DB it gets ugly, so I'm dropping that idea for the moment. A properties dialog make the most sense, and the properties dialog should be where anything about the app can be edited (app name, category icon etc, as such it is quite a change and will NOT be in R28)

It'll probably have to be a tabbed dialog with a general tab where the basic info about the app is shown, and the caption, autorun, and hide options can all be set, a Run on Exit tab that has the options related to running on exit (ExitExe, ExitParams, and RunonExit only if the app was run during this session etc.), a Notes Tab. and possibly a Version tab.

Then the question becomes do I drop the options that can be set in there from the popup menu (ie: autorun will be a checkbox in the properties dialog should should there be an AutoRun option in the popup menu?)

Just found another bug, when loading from DB all apps get the External App set so can be removed from the menu.

I am used to the ASuite app

I am used to the ASuite app properties tabbed dialogue which isn't dissimilar to what you are proposing. For simplicity I would remove options that can be set in the properties dialogue but wouldn't be upset if you went with Simeon's suggestion of having both.

Suggestion for opening

Suggestion for opening folder/exploring here:

Some computer setups (like the one I have at work) have terrible netowrking lag, such that trying to explore, with the folder tree open, makes explorer lag while it figures out what drives are networked and whatnot.

Since opening the folder tree is a just a simple click if someone needs it, could you make all Explore actions open the flat file list, no tree?

Alternatively, add a checkmark option to the right click on the folder link buttons (pictures, video, explore, etc) that toggles between Open and Explore. The setting of the right side Explore button could then extend to every program, when clicking on Explore here.

Minor problem moving an External App

Can move it to the bottom, and to the top, but it will only move down 4 places then gets stuck, if I then move it to the bottom then move it up, it will move up 11 places then get stuck (in the same place as when moving down). This place is between File Editing & File Utils category folders if that is of interest.

I am able to move things around all over without a problem, of course that said I generally use the autosort, and now that I'm trying it find the movement to be cumbersome if it has to move a lot, I'm thinking an option in the move menu to use the keyboard (Use Up and Down arrows to move app, Esc when Finished.)

Could you post the Sortorder section of your portableappsmenu.ini file as a comment to my

OK, I've confirmed the bug

I Think.
It is definitely the sortorder ending up with gaps in the count, you can get it to move, but you have to move it multiple times to do so (this is easier in R29 as you can right click on an app, select Move|Using Keyboard and you can then use the up/down arrow on the keyboard or the mouse scroll wheel to move the app up or down.

I'm not sure how I'm going to fix the counter issue (using the main sort options will fix it, but that defeats the purpose of the manual sort) It could be a lot of lines to rewrite to the config file every time you move something. I have an idea, but didn't have the time to get to it.)
I've also been playing with drag and drop sorting, but that gets really interesting because then people would want the Categories to open if you pause over them, and automatic scrolling all of which would change the buttons on screen including the button your currently dragging.

I'm assuming

He means custom hints (rather than just the location popping up) (geez I hope it still pops up, I use the hint when I'm debugging to show me info about the apps underlying object.)

I'm thinking so, I played a little bit with a properties dialog tonight and that would be a natural option in there.

One problem I encounter: The category icons still do not work in the RolledBlue and Vista v2 themes - or am I missing something? Though I am editing the categories the program does not apply the changes...

EDIT: Having just plugged in my stick at the office everything seems to be fine now Smile All icons are the way they should be. Hell knows why this did not work at my other PC at home this morning - but who cares anyway...

Catagory Icons

Dear Sir,

I have updated R27,28,29. But I am facing problems in Category Icons Like

1 In release 29 In edit mode if you select open/close icon it does not appear in the box selection they are crossed checks. Now if you save it appears in the desktop and well functional But

2 If you install a new application or you move application to the either of the catagory then --- the all of the catagory icons switch back to standard folder icon from the folder icon default.

Two Bugs
  1. So my internal change wasn't so transparent, I missed updating the Category Config dialog to handle the changed object methods.
  2. This one took a bit of figuring, turns out I'm so used to using my own custom wrappers for file selection dialogs that I'd forgotten why I used them and not using them in the menu I missed the fact that an open file dialog in delphi changes the current working directory to the last directory selected in the dialog. This is a problem because all the icon paths are now stored as relative paths so the first load works fine because the path is relative to the application directory on say drive X:, you then load another app from drive C: and your working path is now drive C: so the menu is now looking for the icon on C: (and it surprise, isn't there), fixed.

this is a false positive

this is a false positive unless you scan with several other AV scanners and several of them detect it as a virus. Because of AutoIt's nature (the scripting language used to write EjectScript.exe) it may be flagged as a virus because it can automate several system changes. Checking the source, you will see that it simply ejects the drive, there are no system changes being made.

Its usually the combination of AutoIT and UPX

That triggers the false positive, I upgraded the version of UPX I use with Autoit because of the false positives that were being generated and they went away (for a while)

This is pretty annoying, it's like making wrenches illegal because someone somewhere used a wrench to break a window.

Although I suppose things are better than they used to be, I remember having to uncompress some executable ages ago because it was flagged as a virus just BECAUSE it was compressed.

Could you add a right click

Could you add a right click option to the apps buttons that would give the Run As... dialog? Oftentimes I know the admin logon to a machine, but don't want to logon/logoff to run something like sandboxie (which requires admin rights)

Also, echo again of the Explore Here vs Open Here suggestion: make an option somewhere (perhaps just in the ini) that will Open a directory rather than Exploring it (to prevent the folder tree from loading)

Run As...

I suppose that's going to be needed at some point, I suppose I'll have to figure out how to call the dialog up
OK it's easier than I thought (at least in XP) by using "runas" as the verb in the ShellExecute call the standard dialog got called up (I happened to be working on something else in Delphi 6 so dropped a button on my form linked to ShellExecute(0, 'runas', 'notepad.exe', nil, nil, SW_SHOW) and it just worked.
It was a shock to me, runas is not listed as a valid verb in any docs I have, it was just a "What the Hey" experiment, I'll have to commandeer the lone vista machine for a couple minutes later today to see if it works there as well.

now that is awesome Biggrin

EDIT: http://www.peterprovost.org/archive/2007/02/24.aspx has notepad.exe executed with the runas verb in Vista, so it should work Pardon

Theming Requests

Great work on the Mod xrxca. I have some ideas I suggested in John's new thread about the original menu , thought I would see what you thought of them to.

Would it be possible to add text effects to the buttons? Like , Shadow , Bold , Underline , Italic , etc. If so would it be possible to have seperate settings for "normal" and "selected" buttons? If we could do that and disable the little outline effect of selected buttons, we could then create effects like text that looks like it is "etched in" (using shadow) and then the "selected" text could appear to "light up" Did I use enough quotes in that? lol

I'd also like to be able to disable icons in a theme , for a text only interface. We could do themes with like an old school lcd display.

Major

The text effects are possible, but would require changing the program to handle rollover events in the code rather than letting the delphi vcl handle it, and I'm not sure I want to go there at the moment, While Bold Italic Underline and Strikeout are standard, 'shadow' is not, and would require custom painting code for the buttons. Iconless is quite a bit easier.

Bug with OpenOffice?

Hi,
First of all: this is my first post!
Second: I love all the great work you're doing here!

But, here is something I found, it could be a bug (in R30):
After installing OpenOffice Portable (English or German, both have the same problem), all programs are added to the list, accept for Base.
I tried adding OpenOfficeBasePortable.exe using the "Add an External Prog" option, but this results in an error: List Index out of Bounds (-1)

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Bye,
Pascal

This isnt a bug ;-)

but a hack in the menu John T. Haller made so he could have only the separate Launchers (for writer, calc etc) appearing in the menu. But you cant delete it because the other Launchers call the base launcher with parameters.

EDIT

Sorry I meant "OpenOfficePortable.exe".
The Base launcher should show up in the menu.

I don't get it yet

OOPortable installs 7 executables: 6 for the programms: writer, base, calc, math, impress, draw and 1 for the 'main app' (from which the other programs can be started).
After installing the .paf.exe only 6 exe's are added to the menu: writer, calc, math, impress, draw, as well es the main one. The exe for base is not added, and I found no way so far for adding this!

Just out of curiosity I tried installing the OOoportable Plus - this is a German package (suite) with a lot of other PortableApps added - this version works fine, base is listed in the menu.

Then I tried using this installation with R30 (overwriting all files in the portableappsmenu directory) - base not listed Sad
I tried John's Menu (the newest beta) as well, base not listed Sad

____

I found something else as well: the 'slider' or the calculation for the drive space seems to be buggy: after installing only R30 and some themes it showed 7,2 GB free space from 7,0 GB capacity!?! According to windows, my drive has 7,42 GB (7.977.660.416 bytes)

John's Decision

I just kept it in my code, I suppose with the ability to hide apps I could take it out.

As for the disk space, I have glanced at the disk space code a couple times but haven't bothered really looking at it closely, I'll experiment with a couple drives.

OO.o Base missing from menu

I just installed R30 and am having this same issue about Base not showing up in the menu. Is there a way to fix this? Quick note, it is not "hidden".
Thanks!

Sorry, finger flub when I renamed the file (I was dealing with a bunch of versions of a few locales and had renamed the wrong file then obviously mistyped when I named it back.)

Interest mod. I have a question: why do you use ini file and not xml file for app db? XML is simpler than ini file for apps tree (category and subcategory).

Advice: Don't use bitmap files for big image without trasparency like imgBackground's picture. It is useless and form file (.dfm) and exe file increase in size.
Example:
imgBackground's picture Bitmap Size 683 KB || Exe file 1.40 MB
imgBackground's picture JPeg Size 9 KB || Exe file 813 KB

XML has it's places

And for some things it is phenomenal, however a lot of things it is getting used for are not what it was designed for, it was designed for 'sharing' data. Now unless there are a whole bunch of programs that are all of a sudden going to find a use for a proprietary configuration file, there is zero reason for adding an XML parser to a program just to store simple grouped configurations which an INI file that can be read using native win32 excels at.
And as for the JPEG vs. Bitmap it's kind of a moot point, the exe gets compressed using UPX which will generally result in an exe that is within a few K either way, and in memory a jpeg uses just as much space as a bitmap because it can't be used unless it's uncompressed, JPEG is a compressed STORAGE format, you still need to map it out to X pixels by Y pixels by Z depth.
And to be perfectly honest I would suspect that a jpeg that has been compressed down to less than 2% will NOT look like the designer intended.

Ok for xml (I use xml for my launcher and I'm curious Smile ).

Jpeg vs BMP: You are right, but I intend that imgBackground.picture in design time and not runtime (load from bmp/jpeg file). Use a bitmap in design time (a bitmap about 400*570 with 3 color, white, black and gray) increase in size uselessly.

Ah, I forgot dfm's size:
main.dfm 1.8MB with bmp
main.dfm 317KB with jpeg

DFM is just the source

Which really makes no difference to the end user.
However in the case of a simple image there is another option that a lot of people seem to have forgotten exists, a Run Length Encoded (RLE) BMP file, I just tried this and it also dropped the size of main.dfm from 1.8MB to 317KB, and it is definitely a lossless format, although with an image that simple, jpeg had better be lossless too, but I haven't compared the results.

I know dfm is just source,

I know dfm is just source, but this thing makes difference to developers (for end user, there is exe file Smile ).

Anyway, jpeg is only format example (I say jpeg because I use it for imgbackground.picure in my pam's test for my launcher) and it isn't unique format/algorithm.. Smile

Personally

about the only real difference from a developer point of view I can see is transfer to or from a VCS, and if any of my programmers were using a lossy image format internally I would insist that a lossless copy of the original image was also stored in the VCS.

And if your going to start worrying about size issues, then all the images and icons should be stored in an external resource file, that way whenever the form changes, the images don't get saved with it, whatever size they are.

This is purely semantics in any case, I'll store images how I want and you can do anything you wish.
Either way it's head and shoulders above when we had to handle all the heavy lifting ourselves (pre VCL, Turbo Pascal for windows)

Is there a reason why in the actual version does not seem to be able to run the following .bat file correctly when started from one of the menus buttons being renamed and redirected (to this .bat):

"\PortableApps\TrueCrypt\TrueCrypt.exe /lu /q /a /c n /m rm /v PortableApps\xyz.iso"

This opens the field where to type in the password, but afterwards results in an error message according to which the path (to the TC-volume) cannot be found. This behaviour did not occur in the older versions of the mod.

I have tried to change the entry into "\PortableApps\xyz.iso" as well as ".\PortableApps\xyz.iso" but still I get the same error message...

Any clue why?

Curious

I'd like to know what directory it is running the batch from, try adding something like this to the beginning of the batch file

CD > MNUCDTEST.TXT
START /W MNUCDTEST.TXT
DEL MNUCDTEST.TXT

There may be another relative path issue that I missed, my first question would be is the directory that should show up in notepad if the above lines are added to the batch file even on the portable drive?

OK, here we go xrxca:

OK, here we go xrxca:

The .bat file is situated in the folder "P:\PortableApps\BAT".
The output in the MNUCDTEST.TXT is "P:\PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu"

Hope that makes sense...

The only way it does work atm is the above mentioned .bat file with an entry containing a fixed drive letter like

"\PortableApps\TrueCrypt\TrueCrypt.exe /lu /q /a /c n /m rm /v P:\PortableApps\xyz.iso"

But that is not very well when changing PC's often and it is different from the way it behaved in earlier stages where there was no fixed drive letter needed...
