I've just had my firefox notify me of an update, and I updated to 2.0.0.9.
I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but should I have said yes ?
With it being the portable version is it OK to update it like that ?
It appears to be working OK
Thanks
Paul
Yes you should update. http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0.0.9/releasenotes/
There are several security related items.
To anyone else wanting to update please remember the three rules to upgrading or updating.
Another note. You may whenever you upgrade encounter max version issues with your extensions. Some extension builders restrict compatibility up to a certain level. If that happens just reinstall FFPE from this site or uninstall that extension.

I now I should update, I was more concerned about the way to update.
Just because this is the portable version and not the standard version
Thanks

WSM,
I checked out the link you provided.
It would appear to my reading that 2.0.0.9 is NOT a security release but a stability update. As I am not experiencing any of the issues involved I think I would choose to wait for the next FFP official release from PA.com
You are right in stressing the backup issue. I always backup the data directory before updating.
Also, no matter how you update I have found that it is best to never let FF [WITHIN FFP] restart itself. It often screws up the launcher. It is always best, IMHO, to ShutDown FF [WITHIN FFP] and then restart the launcher [FFP] from scratch.

if updated any extions or the latest Firefox make shore that you DO NOT USE AUTO RESTART just close Firefox and open it maturely because if you don't the Firefox launcher will close half way threw the restart proses and you will start to leave data behind on the computer you are on.

AFAIK (As Far As I Know) you should use the latest, and hopefully greatest, Portable Application version of your product to upgrade. Granted, FireFox may prompt you to upgrade with the push of a button. I think it is best to ignore this message (you can disable this feature in FireFox) and download the updated version from Portable Apps.com.
Unless otherwise directed, just install the new version into your existing directory. It will upgrade the necessary components.
Good Luck!

Not to start an argument, but I've been letting FFP auto update for about 5 versions, with no problem. It's one of the things that I find frustrating about some of the other portable apps, the delay in newer versions available as portable, as well as the time it takes to do. (No criticism of John et al. is implied, I'm just impatient. And lazy.:)) You can even go on the beta upload channel, if that's your cup of tea.
I am not my signature.
the update will overwrite Your uninstall settings for the local FF in the registry. So first update the portable then the local FF.Updating itself will work without any problems.

But it is still good to get the latest & greatest now & then from here because of launcher updates/improvements.

Yes, that was my plan.
Do the update through Firefox and then when it gets released on here overwrite it with that version.
I can say that now I know it's OK to update that way.

Hey, how did the update to "Firefox Portable 2.0.0.9" go???
So far, you're the only one I know of that seems to have done it.
Was it really "Firefox Portable 2.0.0.9", or the Regular FF 2.0.0.9?
Dyin' to know! (See my post at https://portableapps.com/node/10072#comment-56147 ).

...on my portable, and it came out just fine. As long as you have the room on your drive, I am sure that you can apply your update without worry, buggywhip.
Finally, the firsthand experience I have quested for! I salute you for being a courageous Pioneer of the Software Frontier. With renewed confidence I will now proceed with the installation. I only hope that you are not merely a cruel trickster intent on my demise, although I am sure though that this is not actually the case.
Many others have offered their comments, observations, witticisms, criticisms and such, some mocking my concerns; others offering welcomed encouragement and genuine kindness.
But, until you came along, I noticed that apparently none of them had actually dared face the drama of this potential catastrophe or reward themselves. Or, if they did, they chose not to disclose this valuable information.
I will return with the results. Really, thanks!

"Courageous Pioneer of the Software Frontier"?!
Puh-leeze! Some of us have tried telling you. I update as soon as it is offered. It is a non-issue.

I know what you mean LB. I thought she would understand better if I answered the way I did.
Firefox Portable is a great product. It would be good if future versions would let the user know they are upgrading to Firefox Portable, just in case they care what they are putting on their system.
And the "pioneer" stuff was supposed to be funny! Lighten up!

I usually use local firefox from my laptop and it told me about the update first. So I updated it not the portable version first. Oh well...

Is anyone experiencing a problem with FF-PE losing focus? It was happening intermittently at first, then consistently, so I re-installed. That fixed it for awhile, but the problem has returned. Annoyingly so. Addons: tabmix plus, FLV grabber thingie, and that's about it.
Did some searches, and it looks like the non-portable FF has a similar problem, but there doesn't seem to be a solution for it.
Interestingly, when I run FF-PE on the hard drive, without any addons, it seems to run fine. (That's what I'm on now.) Thumb drive is a couple months old, and runs fine on other stuff.
Any ideas?
