As a number of people have asked, here are the steps to translate Toucan.
- Download a copy of poEdit. This is the program you will use to translate Toucan.
- Checkout a copy of the Toucan source code. You will need an SVN client for this purpose, documentation about checking out source code can be found here, and here.
- Once poEdit is installed and the source is downloaded, you need to set up the poEdit file that can be found in the trunk directory, it is recommended that you move it to a new folder before you start. Firstly open the poEdit file. Next click Catalog->Settings->Paths then change the two directories to match the location of your downloaded source, finally close that window and click Catalog->Update from sources, this will ensure that you have the latests strings.
- You can now translate the strings into a language of your choice.
- To load the translation that you have created into Toucan simply save poEdit and a file called Toucan-blank.mo will be created in the same direcotry as your .po file. Rename this to toucan.mo and copy it to Toucan\App\toucan\land\fr and your language will now appear when French is selected as the language in the Settings tab.
Enjoy!
P.S. I will shortly be asking for new translations for the 1.2.1 release, more information coming soon.

Too bad I have no need to translate. Well maybe except when I have to go halfway around the world to see my grandma.

I tried the above steps but i couldn't get it to work. Is there any way that you could just send me the file i have to translate or something? I'd love to translate Toucan in Dutch.

did you have?

It didn't produce any errors
I'm just not familiar with SVN and SVN clients so i couldn't figure out how to use it. A guide for dummies would be much appreciated or if it's possible to just mail me the files i need to translate then i'd be very happy

the svn repository on sourceforge without a svn client.
All you need is Firefox
Here you find a file called "Toucan-blank.po". I guess thats the file that needs to be translated. Download it (right-click), open it with poEdit and start.
If its ok with Steve you can just send the translated thing to him per email.
Thats what I would try. Hope that helps.

The Toucan-blank.po is exactly what it says it is: it's blank! When i open it in poEdit it shows no strings at all.
Thanks for the help though! I guess i'll just wait for an answer from Steve

in your browser you´ll see that its not blank but I dont know how to change that so you´re right:
Lets wait for Steve

Ok this is weird: it works now in poEdit! Thanks Simeon!

His mail is here. I think the address is still valid.

I would like to translate this utility but according to system log, "Toucan-blank.po" was deleted and is no longer available. What I should do?

I've translated it to Chinese(Simplified). And I copied it to the new folder named "zh" under the "lang". But why it isn't displayed in Toucan language list?
I were you I would call it fr and then select French from the menu! Toucan only supports in built languages at the moment but you can trick it into thinking that it is French.
Thx, it works
You also need to edit the file named lang.ini in the directory,the content will be like this:
[General]
LanguageCode=ZH_CN
Translator=Your name
And it'll be work!
but that post was made before the new language system was in place
