they are all very dependent on windows so it would be very hard.
And none of them has a license allowing it to be portabalised.
So its a no.
But welcome to PortableApps.com anyhow.

Only one problem all five are closed source and would be illegal to make portable.
Also with 2 and 4 it violate the MS license as the license only permits the user to have Windows on one computer.
Also Windows Mail and Office immensely uses the Registry (so much its like the Registry is a vital organ for Office and Mail). Also Windows Defender is built into Vista and it does not offer that good of a protection against spyware. Even if we could make a launcher I think it violates the licenses for Office.
I know we are supposed to be nice to noobies, but come on.
You are asking for free/modified versions of Microsoft products - ILLEGAL
You are offering to advertise for people that are willing to break the law in this way - are you kidding?
Please please take a LITTLE time and look around this site.
Did you notice that there are NO commercial apps listed here?
There are great applications - ALL open source - that in many people's opinion, are superior to the Microsoft stuff.
Take a look here
https://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_app
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
Solanus chill,
In the post you mentioned
https://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_app
It mentions nothing about commercial software or GPL licenses or free software.
Just because there is no commercial software on site doesn't mean it couldn't be.
(I do realise that John doesn't have non Open Source programs on site)
I use "OpenOffice" and have done so for years, I recommend it on my website,
I always offer it to my clients (free of charge) whenever I am working on there PC's. But would I agree to your statement ALL open source - that in many people's opinion, are superior to the Microsoft stuff.
The honest answer is I am not sure, I would say that it's a better solution for most people as "OpenOffice" is free and does almost everything that an average PC user could want. (At a saving of 500€ I find it's very popular). But is it better? Financially yes, as user friendly piece of software to a life long microsoft user, very debatable.
Not all commercial, closed source programs are made by Microsoft. "Inkscape" & "The Gimp" (both great, both on my stick, both used, both are going to be put on my new site) are great programs, however neither is my weapon of choice for graphics. I am still a Corel and Xara X1 user, but until they make portable versions (ha ha) I will continue to have "The Gimp" and "Inkscape" with me.
His post is not wrong, but on the wrong site, the programs he is mentioning are free (except Office, and the OS's), and maybe with the great system that John has created it is now time to tell the Commercial program companies to start to write portable apps.
So tell him to send his idea to Microsoft... you never know.
Portable Xara X1 would be fantastic! I think I send a request to them.
The 2 other ideas are:
1 - Just respond to posts like this with a link to a page that spells it out, for the new guy/girl, and leave it a that.
2 - Suggest the correct software to use - Thunderbird instead of Mail and OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. Defender ?
Finally XP portable is available (although not as a portable app), there is MojoPac (not nearly as good as PortableApps) or see this post: https://portableapps.com/node/11087
The legality is questionable, but the idea is sound. With the new SSD flash drives, why have an OS's fixed. We could return to the idea that a PC is personal with portable OS's, until that day we have Portable Apps.
However I think portable vista is a bit of a dream/nightmare.
Cheerio
Chris
Atom, I have noticed that Microsoft has become increasingly protectionist about its software, and I believe that if someone were to alter any of these, and distribute them for free, they would be in danger of lawsuit from Microsoft.com. That would endanger the programmer, as well as you, if you advertised them on your site.
I think if you would take a little time to explore the world of open source, you would soon realize that you can accomplish your goals quite easily with software that can be legally altered and distributed for free:
- Windows Mail - I prefer Thunderbird; with the Lightning extension, it has similar calendar functions
- Microsoft Office - OpenOffice.org does almost everything an average user can do in Microsoft Office - and it generates cleaner HTML code when making web pages
- Windows Defender - there are a lot of open source and freeware spyware programs, and even virus software. I like Avast!, it seems to be as good as or better than McAfee
- Windows XP, Windows Vista - these are operating systems. The apps on this site are designed to work in that environment; but if you want a free operating system, I suggest Linux: Knoppix is a great LiveCD one, and Ubuntu also works as a LiveCD.
There aren't PortableApps for Linux, yet, but most of the major Open Source apps are typically included on the LiveCD distros.
Once PortableApps for Linux are available, we can look forward to a day when we can carry everything in our pockets, a LiveCD OS, and a flash drive with apps and docs.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
This is what a "sticky" to point new user to should be like.
A comparison chart would be a good idea, I may do this myself soon as part of my new site. I will post it here afterwards (with no mention of my site as that would be against site rules).
Cheers,
Chris.
Uhhh I thought it was okay to put your home page in your profile? That could have links in it.

I own a Computer company in Spain, my homepage is not a blog or a personal page,
but rather my business pages. So in which case it would be considered self promotional, and to be honest normally when I use it, that is the case.
Self promotional sites have been mentioned as being against the forum rules before.
I have no desire to upset anyone so I will simply post my comparisions in the forum.
Portableapps has made my life a lot easier and I will be shouting about from my pages. But I will probably also mention some of the great Beta software and closed source apps that can be used on those pages as well.
If I am wrong, and I can mention my homepage even though it will have alot about other USB applications (All legal), and to be honest I will be trying to sell stuff to all my visitors (but not through "Gorgle b-Adwords") I will be more than happy to add my site as soon as I have time to finish it.
Doesn't really relate to the idea of showing a comparision chart, but heres where I got my information here:
https://portableapps.com/node/9641
No Self-Promotional Posting - Posting about your own software or websites in an online forum is a form of spamming and is not permitted here.
I read this as meaning I can't link to my site here, at least not directly from the forum, i.e. to my own programs on a stick page.
If I were John and the team I wouldn't really want people going off site to view Portableapp information, especially as I wouldn't be able to control it.
This is why I suggest a comparision chart to suggest Apps, ON THIS SITE.
One chart with official Apps, and one for all the others. The other apps wouldn't have to be hosted here, and could come with BIG warning signs. i.e. not support by Portable apps - May knacker (British for screw up) Your PC/Flash Drive/Life or marriage.
As much as I love open source software especially the price, like any long time PC user I have favourite pieces of software that are commercial or closed source that I would love to see portable (This is not going off thread, see top of thread). This is not John's Problem BUT his vision of a Portable system should be universally shared (come on Bill).
Microsoft Has copied a lot of ideas (the good ones) from Linux & Mac. It's time they followed with portable software as well.
So as I said before in this thread we should be petitioning the commercial software companies to make Portable versions.
To quote myself:
His post is not wrong, but on the wrong site, the programs he is mentioning are free (except Office, and the OS's), and maybe with the great system that John has created it is now time to tell the Commercial program companies to start to write portable apps.
So tell him to send his idea to Microsoft... you never know.
Portable Xara X1 would be fantastic! I think I send a request to them.
Maybe this will encourage some of them to share the source (like IdTeam have done with the quake engine) with the world.
That's my 4 euros (It was 4 cents before inflation, and the euro is worth more than the dollar :))
Cheers
Chris
From the actual guidelines, The exception is if someone asks a question directly related to your product.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Athough I love open source stuff I would love to have iTunes on my drive to take with me, and Google Earth and Google SkechUp would be nice, too (although that's about it commercial-wise). Until the day that all software is written so that the regestry isn't needed in the program itself, I'll have to wait.
Also, can someone take care of the open cite tag? It's where cipher says
"So tell him to send his idea to Microsoft... you never know." edit: I put a "/cite" in my post here.
