Making Nero portable?

Please note, I'm NOT suggesting this for a portable app for this site.

I use Nero and Recode a lot. Unfortunately Nero makes a big mess when it is installed and I would love if I could make a portable version which could be tugged away in, and launched from, a single folder. Clean in, Clean out. No mess.

If anyone could point me (thoroughly if possible) in the direction of what I would have to do to make Nero portable, I would appreciate it. I know that shady versions are floating around the net, but I'm not interested in using any of those. However, the fact that they do exist makes me optimistic that it's possible to make my own portable version.

I already tried PAC and it simply quits in the last phase with an error message from autoit.

If I understand correctly, making an app portable requires two things. One is flashing the registry with all the required keys and cleaning them out again. The other is referencing or making available (better word?) all the required .dlls and so forth - which I have absolutely no clue how to do.

If I missed the tutorial section, please point the way Smile

Can't

Not OSS. The license does not let anyone alter it in any way

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

Wow, what a terrific waste of software. I wonder if it would be legit doing a vmplayer version. Or what about a thinstalled version?

Nobody would be altering anything, EXCEPT for the mess that is being spewn unto the harddrive. Is it really against the license consolidating all the files in one place as long as the content of all the files is left alone?

In a way, that's what happens when you put something in VMware or VirtualBox, etc.

As long as the integrity of the program is left alone, who cares? It's the environment that is being virtualized and thus as long as the program is happy with what it sees, and the program itself has not been altered structually (except for harddisk location) everything should be honky dory.

You would have to read the

You would have to read the license yourself, not all of us have Nero to be able to see if creating a portable launcher would be legal or not. But I dont think it will be an issue as long as it is YOUR copy of Nero and you dont redistribute it at all. The hard part would be tracking down all the reg keys and files it leaves behind. With thinstall costing almost $5000, i think an NSIS launcher would be your best bet.

Yeah, that's my whole point.

Yeah, that's my whole point. It's my copy, for my use only so I can finally have a clean drive.

After working, PAC does a printout of all the reg keys and files that nero installs. I guess I'm still too noobish to know what to do with it. I'll check out what I can find out about NSIS launchers, thanks!

well NSIS is the scripting

well NSIS is the scripting language used to create all of the launchers for the apps hosted here, download some and look in the Other/Source directory for [AppName].nsi those are the source code for the launchers.

Also, the utility used by PAC, RegShot can be set to monitor multiple directories, it monitors the full registry by default. IMHO it is much easier to use the printed txt file from manually running RegShot than it is to try to figure out what happened after PAC runs.

use the RegShot Portable to test.
Steps:
fully uninstall Nero from your machine
use something like CCleaner to clean up unused registry keys
set up regshot to scan "C:\Documents and Settings" as well as the existing directories in the box (this way "All Users/Application Data" and "[UserName]/Application Data" can be monitored too)
use regshot to take a snapshot
reinstall nero
use the "2nd shot" button in regshot
click Compare
the created file will list all created, modified, deleted registry keys and directories for whatever dirs you add

Hey digitxp -- which part of

Hey digitxp -- which part of the EULA says that? Or are you quoting from a different version of the license?

Portable nero is allowed..

for Your own purpose. But You have to use a full license, not OEM and You have to uninstall Your local copy after You created a portable one or You have to buy a second license. So, with about 100MB to carry about it´s even smaller than OpenOffice. - and I think a launcher would be appreciated by a lot. But there are some free burners here, fully portable and as fine as nero, at least as on the fly burners.

InfraRecorder > Nero

Since Nero completely sucks IMO, I'd suggest you change over to InfraRecorderPortable which rocks and is portable (naturally). Two problems solved at once!

I could probably replace the

I could probably replace the burning part of Nero with a freeware app, but I don't know how I could replace Recode. It's simply the fastest and easiest to use encoding software I've come across so far, and it gives great results too.

Got any suggestions for alternative?

Here ya go

Audio Encoding:

BonkEnc Portable Development Test(Can be considered fully stable, needs minor updates before official release here)

Audio or Video Encoding:

MediaCoder Portable Development Test (this one still needs some updating to the latest PAF specifications.)

Burning:

InfraRecorder Portable Pre-Release (Developed by John T. Haller, original developer of the PortableApps.com apps, can be considered fully stable)

Mediacoder looks interesting

Mediacoder looks interesting in its own right, but I don't think it'll do what I expect. I'll continue to keep looking for a way to make Nero portable Smile Hopefully it won't be too much of a pain.

Oops

Okay I found out that Nero installs a low level driver that makes it impossible to even thinstall. This means whatever I do with a regular launcher will probably leave some kind of trace at least. I'll look more closely into the alternatives listed here. Thanks again for all the replies!

So don´t stop right before the goal and

tell us Your needs for transcoding (MPEG2 to Divx...), I´m sure there´s already a free codec available as plugin or standalone app. Sometimes requests for launchers are heard.....

Nero Micro

Look up Nero Micro. It's not portable (as far as I know), but its so much smaller than the standard install.
