This thread has been discontinued do to its size. I've created a new one, here. Hope to see you there!
Hi Guys! Happy St. Patrick's day. As a great gift :), I'm giving out to development tests early! You should already know about about FakeNES. Now for PNotes.
Ryan was kind enough to let me have his wrapper from the 2x version of PNotes. I've updated it and put in the newest PNotes.

Did you right click, save-as? That's a bad habit to be in around here.
Portable PNotes Website
PNotes is a wonderful little program that allows you to post virtual sticky notes on your desktop, or wherever! Enjoy!
My apologies to all I got after.
ChangeLog
- Development Test 1- Initial Release
- Development Test 2- Fixed installer naming issue, menu name issue various other things
- Development Test 3- Fixed something in the installer (Pre install code, if your curious
- Development Test 4- Fixed an installer issue, cleaned up according to Patrick's
suggestions. - Development Test 5- De upx-ed the executable which was causing Aciago trouble on his Vista machina. Thanks' for finding that bug, Aciago
- Development Test 6- Nothing wrong with the main program or the portablization. Just doing a different installer. Fixed a few things, I think.
- Development Test 7- Fixed a crapload of stuff
Thank you for the paf wrapper; I've been waiting for this.
It appears to have installed fine (all my old notes/settings are as they should be). I can't tell if anything is being left behind, but PNotes does seem to be functioning properly.
Great work; thanks again!
*Bug: the launcher displays concatenated in PAM as PnotesPortable instead of Pnotes Portable. (As an aside, shouldn't the name really be PNotes Portable?)
*Bug: note position on screen is not being saved on exit. I don't know whether this is an issue with the launcher or this version of PNotes.
Bug Number 1- Yes it should. Good call. I'll upload a new version in a minute.
Bug Number 2- Hmm, that woulld probably be a PNotes issue. Andrey assurred me everything was portable. I'm thinking that your screen resolution changed? That can confuse the poor old windows box.
New Version released, see above.
And thanks for your help.

And notes do preserve their position - just checked.
Thank you, Oliver!
Thanks for the compliment!

Yes, of course, since 3.0 and up (PNSkinCreator v 2).
updating from Dev test1 deletes all previous notes

Um, you have a backup right?
You need to use the utility to upload notes from previous version. Right click on the icon, preferences, misc. tab, down at the bottom it says get notes from versions prior to 3x
Note that you can't use 2x skins either.
Or did you mean I messed up the installer? PLease don't tell me I messed up the installer.

Checked an rechecked- installs fine over here. But I might have messed up koompozer. Anyway, I'm going to upload a new test.
Did you install 3.5 over either 1x (Johns) of 2x (Ryan's)?

- my update was from3.0 to 3.5 by lamer, then I put the app folder into your first template, it worked, then I copied over Your devtest1, it worked, no problems, upgrading to Devtest2/3 didn´t work.I found out that I had left the data folder within the original app.The launcher started pnotes.exe and it took the data from it´s original data folder, then putting ini and pnid into the new portable data folder. That seemingly worked until devtest 2. Now I´ve installed it completely anew, and replaced the data files after first start. All notes are back...So, perhaps it was just messed up by mingling original pnotes with your portable?

Probable, from what you say. I thought Ryan's launcher had the code to copy over files, mayhaps I was wrong.

You don't need 'testers needed' in forum titles anymore. It's in Beta Testing, so it's assumed. The only time to use it is when there's an urgent need in a short timeframe (like the InfraRecorder fix last week to replace the version that was pulled).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Ach so- I was hoping it get more testors, hence the yadah yadah yadah part.
I'll fix it after I post this
Also- is there anyway I could get a copy of the logo to make a skin? Please? Thanks.

Hey Oliver, you did awesome on this one, great job updating the launcher and all.
There's just a few minor things:
$INSTDIR\Data
, it's needed. That's all, you did really well with this, I hope it gets released. May I suggest updating the post title to include a version number, and using the template stickied at the top of the beta testing forum.

Updated today. Fixes a "bug" I created in the installer by not letting it make a Data directory (but that's okay, the program made it for itself). Also updated according to Patrick's suggestions.
Also, I have a goody for you guys. Yesterday was pretty non-productive because I was watching my sister. Anyway, here's what I did while I was "non-productive."
Introducing (drum roll please . . . .)
PNotesSync
Consider it alpha-ish. Remember the 3 b's of computing, but it should work.
PNotes Sync copies the notes PNotesPortable to your home PNotes, and in vice versa.
OSI license, I just haven't put the license file in, yet. Source is included.
If anybody wants to test both PNotesSync and PNotes Portable, I'd be very thankful.

For PNotesSync, you may want to come up with a name other than PNotes.exe for that file.
And if the user doesn't select a folder during setup, display the "You did not select a folder" message box, then give them an option to either quit setup, or repeat the same step to select a folder. This way the setup won't continue and create an invalid configuration.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I changed the it to PNotesSync.exe
I'll have to play with the code tomorrow afternoon. I'd rather not mess with it right now.

when I click in the black square, a Windows Vista Window appear telling me that the app stopped working and if I should look for a solution on line or close the app or wait... So I should say that the app is freezing when trying to show a note... it doesn't matter the skin.

BTW, I opened one, clicked on Adjust and then on Standard view, now I have a huge note that covers my screen from one side to another and it looks like endless... I'm tired of moving to the left trying to find the manual adjust...
I'm looking for a place to store a screenshot so give me a couple of minutes while I find something...

It's impossible to be a bit pregnant - either no skins, or all with skins
Hey Oliver first of all: great App, congratulations - it runs fine here,...
I've recognized that english is still the first and only language, so I'm about to translate the english.lng language file to german now.
Before i start i have a question: at the beginning of the file in the language section there is the id=0x809
to which id i must change it for the german language? the number 809 reminds me to the Codepage ids from DOS there it is 850 or 851 for german - but i'm not sure if i'm right with this.
When i'm ready with the translation i can post it here, if you want,...
I don't really know. (Lamer, this would be a really, really good place for you to chime in :o)
Actually, all I really did is update Ryan's wrapper.(He let me have the project :)) Then I put in Pnotes 3.5.
I went looking on the PNotes Homepage on found this german translation.
This would probably have the answer your looking for. I'm on a library computer, so I don't want to download it.
I know Lamer was looking to have the newer version translated, I'm sure he would appreciate your help.
(I don't mean to be mean, sorry if I come accross that way. Hence, I smother the message in smileys :))

sure, i had in mind that the other pnotes post were from annother user i forgot or didn't see, that you only do the launcher for it,...
But okay, it's good to know, that there is alredy a german language file - this would save me some work *lol* (By the way: the id is 0x407 for german)
Hehe, and you know now, what you have forgotten in the PAF - the language files
And sure, if lamer want's to have some help for the german language file for the new Version - i think i could help. As far as i know has Simeon (the author of the actual file) other things at the moment.
But i don't want to steel his task, i only thought there was no german language file in the package as in all the other .zips from the DEVa an BETAs of PNotes.
cool.
I wonder if lamer would tell me what that id does . . .
I've put in the base install of PNotes, and it comes with english only. With english my primary language and iggy-pay atin-lay (PigLatin) as my second language :P, I hadn't thought about the fact that putting in language packs would be helpful to other users.
Do you think it would be worth including a smattering of languages or not(Probably spanish and german)?
P.S, John if your reading this, let me know what you think. I'll probably post this app as ready for official release in about week, barring no morebugs are uncovered. Also, how about a portableapps.com skin?

first of all sorry for my bad grammar in the last sentence i wanted to correct this, but you were faster with your answer and the edit function was lost - i wanted to say: i only thought there was still no german language file, because in the package, as in all the other .zips from the DEVs and BETAs of PNotes, was no german language file.
Yes of course i think it would be better to include the other language files - the important and most used ones, i think they cost not much space in the PNotes app Folder and don't make the Package much bigger, cause they include text only, so they are good to compress. Would be a big advantage for users their native language isn't english. So they have only to click on the language option see their own language and quick switch to it, without downloading any additional files.
Most other apps include other language files, then english too, if it is only a simple languge file, so why not PNotes too?
Would turn PNotes Portable into a multilanguage App Packkage
Youre right. I did the translation. But I finished the updated lang file for the latest version after it got released so its ready but you have to ask lamer if the one on the website is the latest. The german zip he has there seems broken. So you (mecki77) dont have to do the work as its already done. Someone just have to find it
As for the languages, Id go with french, spanish, German and italian. These are the mose downloaded lang files on the sf-project.
Lets hope Lamer chimes in...
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
the german language file seems to be okay - it runs with PNotes,... but i compared it with the actual english file and found out, that some lines and a complete time format sections are missing. i've already update my german.lng that i've had downloaded with the missing lines - i only have to translate them
The suggested languages french, spanish, italian and german sound good - maybbe dutch and danish too - but i think, that's enough.
And for the other languages, i think an advice on the release page (when it is released) where to get other languages then the ones that come with the package should be a good deal.
Lamer said the time/date formats weren't so important so I "ignored" them
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I don't like to say "important language" because maybe the Greeks (just an example) could say they have an important language too, I prefer to say "most common"...
But, anyway, I think lng files are too small and once you install your App you can always delete those you don't use (I always do it, I only keep English and Spanish), so my suggestion is to include every available language (soon you'll receive a lot of new languages for this App... I bet it!).
Also, I'd like to suggest to include skins, at least the three classics. A note preloaded with a skin looks a lot more pretty than the one without it... hence, more popular...
What do you think?
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
yes, you're absolutely right - i think "most common" languages meets more the meaning of that what i wanted to say,...
Sure, it's a good idea to include all too,... In pidgin there are integrated all available languages too and they need much more space than the PNotes language Files,... (Oh wait in pidgin all availaible languages are integrated: once in the Pidigin locales Dir and the second time in the GTK+ Dir - the GTK language Files *lol*)
in Gimp you have to install all languages too, if you want to have annother then english,...
So i don't think the small language files of PNotes will be a problem - and if they are all integrated noone has to go to any download pages to search his language file, because his language File was not "important" enough to integrate
To integrate the skins would be a nice idea, so everyone can change the look of PNotes and everyone can see how the skins work and change the look of PNotes and can deceide for himself if it would be a god idea for him to look for other skins, then the included or leave it,...
I think they are not big too,...
It's the first time I checked out P-Notes...
To the developer:
Some things I wonder about: the header shows the date of a note. I almost wanted to edit the title and use the title and or date as save name. Now on save notes it asks me for titles of the notes. I hope in the future it gets support for caption with title which is editable. (Or just use date/time as name?)
The 'edit' icon has no use as the menu bas shows up whenever I click on the note.
The close icon is not the perfect way to delete the note. To me it feels like the X should just close the note, not delete it, and the maximize icon should not be used to hide the note. The right click of the note is sufficient for choosing to delete it. Having the delete not as the X icon but just closes/hides the note is more conform the most windows work.
Less important: I also feel the caption and edit right click should be synced so the caption does not have to be clicked specific. (It can be quite small)
It would be nice to right click a note to add an alert feature to be accessed for that note to pop up or something
Nice tool to launch when Portable menu launcher. I might start using it when it comes out of beta. (Although the number of apps started alongside the menu takes alot of space in the system tray (And also alot memory used? idk)
Thanks for the app.
PS. does the notes remember changes to the content without selecting 'save'? If not, i think I would like them to
Well, well, well!
That's what I call to have an intensive working day!
I can't follow the thread on my work place, but now I'm home - give me a couple of minutes to sort it out.
First off - languages and skins.
There are no objections to include as much as possible in package. I just don't know how other apps are built. I saw both apps which had all possible languages include, and those with english UI only and required to download additional languages. And skins as well. In the first version of PNotes I included all available languages and skins, but then changed my mind and became more minimalist - not all translations come in time with new release. Sometimes it may take even more than month - unfortunately it doesn't depends on me, but on translators. I pester them, but... And who can decide, of course, which language is "more common"? And what about newly added translations?
In principle I have nothing against adding all available languages to package if it will be for the programm good, considering each of them is only 10-12 Kb
Skins in contrast to language file are much more "heavy",40-60 Kb, so it can increase the package size. Again, if it will for programm good I see no reason not to add them.
BTW, languge ID is required for correct work of "Languages" menu when there are more than one language, so it's very important and I specially ask all translators on my site add accurate ID. I even have put there file with all available IDs in order to be sure - http://pnotes.sourceforge.net/languages-ids.txt.
Well, this was part one
P.S.
Oliver, PortableApps skin is a great idea!
May be somebody more gifted than me could do it?
1) In the first versions the note's creation date/time was used as default name for saving. But then many users asked me (and I agree with them) to make it "Word-like", i.e. get the number of initial characters as prompt for very first save. Again, you may always change it, and you may alway use "Save As" to change the note's name and. as result, it's caption.
2) The "edit" icon I try to use only as indication that this note hase been changed, but not saved yet. Once you save the note it (icon) should disappear. The "clock" icon appears when note is scheduled.
3) I agree that look of "close" and "hide" buttons is far, far to be perfect! Making skins in general takes me much more time than coding and I'm not an artist
4) To sync right-clicks of edit area and other area? Yes, higly probable.
5)
Sorry, I just didn't uderstand. The alert feature DO accessible via right click and choosing "Adjust". Do I miss something?
6) If you choose "Autosave" option all notes will be automatically saved in specified interval.
Thank you - I need suggestions and comments very much, because it's difficult to see some things from within the project.
Regards
Okay, a couple of updates.
Language- It looks like if PNotes Portable goes final or pre-release, I'll be including some languages. I'll probably do german, spanish, italian, and french.
Skins- John hasn't contacted me (please? :()yet, so, I don't *really* have permission yet to use the icon in a skin. I'm probably gonna get the old skin that looks like papyrus working. I'll include that one (assuming it works) and probably the classic.
PNotesSync- Some of you may know about it. I've made a new version, here I'm still considering it alpha-ish, but should be functional. I made a bunch of code changes and added a much nicer gui to the program. I finished, then ran out, so I haven't really had time to test everything to make sure it all works as it should. I added two different icons (instead of just stealing the PNotes icon) and seriously rehashed the code, adding some of Zach's suggestions.
Release- Well, since the ten messages I just read weren't bug reports, I'm still hoping to have this be the final and submit it as ready for release sometime next week.

No, I can't find anything, not in the launcher, and not in the App... and trust me, I use this App daily, the whole day...

hello olliver, i took a look at the skins from the pnote page (only the ver. 3.x ones) and in my oppinion not all are applicable for integration, cause the wouldn't suit the taste of all users.
I would suggest tropicalchip - that is very nice - the three classic ones: classic-blue, classic-yellow - and maybe classic pink
...and barbie for the girls *lol* - no i'm just kidding hehe
a Portable apps skin would be stylish - tropicalchip or classic-yellow with the portable apps Logo as a transparent watermark - if John gives his permission and allows it - what do you think?
Edit: tropical chip and the three classic ones are even the smallest in size,...
What you say is true.
The classic would be good- yeah, I guess in all the different colors.
I don't care for the tropical chip, though. Its not my favorite.
Perhaps the three classics and the PortableApps skin, providing JTH gives permission. I may have to make a more direct posting to John, but I hope not.

are good and not really big in size: 20 - 25 Kb. The tropical chip I only included in my suggestion, cause it has a pretty simple look - ideal for notes i think.
And don't forget the barbie skin for the girls *lol*
For the portable apps Skin i have an awesome idea (or is amazing the right word?) in mind: Something like an empty PortableApps Splashscreen with the Logo and the line at the bottom of it and the Logo in big as a watermark in the background. I tried it in Paint.NET - it looks cool
What do you think? But it makes not much sense to think about it, before you have Johns permission to make something like a portabble Apps PNotes Skin.
Oliver, take a look at the Multi installer used in GIMP Portable. You could use that to include all language packs in the installer and give a choice to install them or stick with English. The same could be done for skins by adding another option.

Good idea. A litt. . .lot more work for me, but I think it'd be worth it.

As an author of PNotes, do I have a right to add a language for pre-installed group?
If so, please don't forget Russian.lng
anyway, I don't like the multilingual installer, you have only two options a) English or b) anything else... is an advance but I think is better if each language should be an option... If I want Italian (for example) why I need to have also German, Dutch, etc? Then I have the extra work of surfing each folder locating lng files and delete it

I agree with you. IMHO, installer should include either all available languages, or English only. The same about skins. Eventually, this is normal practice - to download additional components.
I'd suggest including all languages and maybe 3 skins. If someone wants to do a PA skin and the author is cool with us including it, it's fine by me. I'd like to have approval on the look for the release, though, if that's ok.
As for UPX, what settings were you using?
And as for official release, I think we should go on this one this week. Is there a high res logo somewhere?

Yup! Right here By Zach Hudock.
If ever in need of a logo, check out Zach's! He has a nice KeePass one there, too.
Wow! What a nice images! Is there still any question who have to make PA skin?
I look with a shame on my graceless skins..:)
I'm sure NeoRame could make an awesome one, and he'd be happy that some of his PortableApps.com work finally gets to go public.
Uppps i have see this post to late.... (holidays...) but i can take a look [i know lamer, MrElchbau and WK (i will upload it tomorrow) was faster]
@ John T. H. can i create a "NEW" one?????

Sorry for my lousy English!!!
Sure go for it. If its good (which I think it will be) I'll put it in. Unless the size get huge. But still, under 1.5 mb- its all good right?

May be decrease its size a little? I looks large a bit for my 1024x768. But I suppose on higher resolution it will be ok.
Sorry, too used to my 1680x1050

Standard settings for UPX- use the compression scripts on Ryan's website.
I like Shawn's skin. The portable apps could be a little cleaner, but that's going at it from pixel level, I think. Let me now if you like it. If so, I'll include it.
I'll be back to a standard hawk watching on Monday. I just stopped by the library for a quick check on progress. I was suprised by the number of replies.
I'll work on setting the high res logo in on Monday. Again, its a lib computer.
I got the multipage installer. There's alot of langauge files on the website. Are they all updated to 3.5? Perhaps we could do a "standard" language in the installer (with the before mentioned languages) and then a "additional" languages in the installer with the rest of the available languages.
This is a side note, but is anybody using the PNotesSync? Just curious. I'm interested to know how well it's working for those who do.

All languages at http://pnotes.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=3 under "Version 3.5" are up to date (if we'll ask Simeon to accomplish date/time formats for German :)). And may be more in a couple of days.
I have already done the time/date formats for myself, so you can have my Version of the language File if you want,...
I'd like to merge the files, if Simeon doesn't mind it.
Let's see what he says.
BTW, why arent you making the PortableApps version as well?
1) I'm VB.NET programmer at work, I write C programs as hobby, I want also to dig into Python (add shopping, housekeeping, child's school etc) - but my internal processor is 64 K only, it will not stand the NSIS test yet
2) And in general I think Oliver will make it much more better
Well I was able to do some simple things in NSIS. So I guess you could also. And as your app is made for portability, would making the launcher even simpler I guess
Okay- I'm thinking that the installer will have something like translations 1, translations 2, etc. I don't know how I'll organize that, but, I'll figure it out.
Zach, is it alright if I use your icon for the high-res version?
Shawn, I'm gonna use your skin as the portableapps.com skin, provided everyone is okay with that.
Thanks to everyone for the help.

Hmm, click on the above link and install it I dare you.
The new installer is ready. Once you figure out the base code, life is good.
Breaks up the languages into 3 packs. Also has some skin installs.
Thanks to Zach for the icon, Shawn for the portableapps skin. I like it.

This is using a modified PortableApps.com Installer that won't be supported by the upcoming official release.
Honestly, everything installed is UNDER 1MB so there's no reason at all to have these extra options. It serves no purpose.
The only reason we do it separately for Pidgin and GIMP is because the localizations are multiple times the size of the app itself (GIMP is 26MB, the language pack it 40MB).
