-still shows sunbird 0.7 -> local 0.8 and wants to upgrade
-lang support window appears every time, unnecessary -> advanced options window would do better once a choice has been made,
-proxy setting is kept to "manually" even when I have chosen none or default
-"show all apps or only installed" checkbox isn´t performed properly every time, seems that the change in the settings is sometimes ignored, so is "delete temporary files afterwards" checkbox
perhaps after first run and managing the settings the advanced window should be hidden and be replaced by a button or welcome window with the change settings y/n prompt? nice work, though the impression is alpha 8 is less stable than 7..

This occurs for many of the apps. Is there a way maybe to suppress the second set of numbers if they are the same as the first?

I would not have thought it would have been that difficult, the Menu seems to pull it off without a problem.

All the menu does is look for EXE files. It honestly has no Ideqa if it's an official portable app, or what it will do. The updater must look for specific files, and specifically check their version.

I don't have to manually update all my apps! I tried out Alpha 8 today.
I briefly browsed through this forum, so pardon me if some of these issues have already been addressed.
1- As previously noted, On-Screen Keyboard and Mozilla Sunbird wanted to downgrade. It also wants to update Inkscape Portable (RC!) 0.45.1.0.45.1.0--> (local:0.45.1.0.45.1), but the CRC fails, and the package is deleted.
2- I did not check off "Delete packages after Install", yet the packages were deleted. Mind you each of the packages that it did download I did not install, since I wanted to monitor this "alpha" software more closely. By the way, is there a log file?
3- Package location was not saved.
4- First time using it, I did not really know what options to chose, after clicking next, I could not go "Back", it just died. I re-installed it, and realized that I needed to check off the View Options on the bottom.
5- The help page is not really helpful since it doesn't mention any of the options or what they do.
6- help.htm page is not included in the package, yet it is in your svn trunk.
Marko, I will gladly be awaiting your Alpha 9 (and I'll be monitoring it, I have a SVN plugin for Eclipse :-p)
I'm with you on #5 I got the impression that i had to enter information into them, but when i tried it stopped working only started working when i deleted all of the fields
#5 - I have a help.htm in my Directory, although i cant be 100% certain it wasn't left over from a previous install. As A9 seems to be imminent, i'll wait for that now and do an upgrade and a fresh install to see what happens.
I love the app, even though its not quite the way i'd like it (cant have everything). Marko's done a excellent job.
As for not showing the Settings page on 'back', i think that should do what is expected and not exit, as it is the only way to change any settings if you unticked the 'settings' option. Maybe Change the label of the button to 'Settings' and only load the page automatically on the first run.
I was thinking about some of the settings and the way they are used...
Two that i think might be better of on the download list page are:
"Delete Packages after Install" and Show "Only Installed Packages"
Alternatively a 'Settings' button on that page instead.
The reason being, once you untick show settings, you have no option but to use your previous settings (without editing .ini files), both of the above mentioned options may wish to be changed on a more frequent basis.
Not sure how easy the Show only installed would be as i expect it would need to reload the database to refresh the list, but the delete button would be quite useful.
updated both notepad and TBP -> no issues. Good idea with the commandline for the setup window.Haven´t tested changing the advanced settings so far

Yes, please do! Since it is cumbersome to visually locate new nested posts on non-first pages (for threads that get split up into multiple pages), which don't display the red "New" tag at the upper right e.g. when following the link in the Track:ers "Replies" column for the Topic.
(I don't know if that feature is broken, or it's just something wrong with my setup. Maybe this has been discussed elsewhere?)
this icon is better (i had the same idea, but you now the copyright thing... ), its simple and it says all...
but change the red arrows to a green, it looks better...

you don't need a converter. icofx opens image files, exes, ico, and a lot more for you to edit and save in the PA format. and it has a portable version.
I have updated to Alpha 9 and to be perfectly honest...
Whats changed, it looks EXACTLY the same, same bugs same icon etc etc.
I am guessing that the install didn't fully complete so i only got bits of the install (OS installed under = Vista). -
NOTE: On run it was not indicating that i needed to update updater after updating (if that makes any sense.
I will re install now and let you know, heres hoping...
OK, re-updated manually and the icon has changed, looking good.
Seems to ignore my 'settings.ini' i have options=1 but i am seeing no settings window, nor any button, option to enable it.
I am going to do a fresh install to see what that does, so far it seems updating is not a good idea.
From a fresh install, the chances are 50/50 that you wont get to see a screen at all, Just the old message 'No Actualisation Needed', which i thought was going to be changed to something more understandable like 'No Updates Required'.
Where is the settings screen, why cant i get it to show?
The 'help.htm' is no help, it still has half of the settings missing from the previous version let alone this version.
I also agree with the general feeling, what happened to changing the icon to the two green circling arrows? Although if the circular shape in the background, represented the internet better (maybe a globe) it would look nicer.
While i appreciate the effort going into this development, it seems like we have taken a step backwards.
The configuration page is only available over the command line switch /SHOWOP.
The message was'nt changed, cause my focus on Alpha9 was fixing the config page and version control issues and to get Alpha9 as stable as Alpha7.
But if Ryan will change the string in svn it will be in the next version
The icon was the last I've got (the source for the other icon was lost in transit on the first try) and now we have an own icon-thread.
I'll check why the self-update from Alpha8 to Alpha9 don't work to prevent this problem for the next version.
Thank You for feedback

I've thought of something. Adding the updater to the buttons on the left would make it look a little more 'official'.
Right now, it seems very separate from the actual platform (More like a 'mod').
What do you think? Should it be more integrated into the menu?

I dont think it can be done from within this application. It would need to be built into the menu system which is also currently in beta (unofficial).
You can however modify your theme (at least the ones that run under the unofficial beta).
For instance, i have the PSP theme, which runs an external exe to eject the drive.
I copied this part of theme.ini added to [CustomButtons]:
4=BTN_Update
Modified the copied code to suit my needs.
Made a shortcut to portableappsupdater.exe in the same place within the Theme as eject.exe and renamed it to 'updater'

Resized Your icon from svn with icofox to 24x24. Fits perfectly into the standard icon theme for portableapps So, for anybody else with Mod R3x
-> put a new folder called "icon theme" into your theme folder
-> rightclick download "appicon" from SVN
-> resize the icon to 16x16 oder 24x24 ( open in iconfox and delete the bigger sized icons, then save it as update.ico into the the new icon theme folder)
-> open the theme.ini and add the code
In the default button arrangement, update button appears with icon just below the default buttons - perhaps the top/Left location has to be changed for one or two pics.

Tested having 7-ZipPortable in C:\PortableApps folder. Updater A9 does not list 7-Zip as already installed or update available if settings.ini is set to show all apps
Now If I copy C:\PortableApps to E:\PortableApps and delete 7-ZipPortable folder and then run same updater a9 from E:\PortableApps\PortableAppsUpdater folder 7-Zip is listed as available install.
... where it is installed and run it.
So if You have a directory c:\portableapps You have to install the updater in this directory and run it from this directory too.
There is no scan for other directories, cause updater is designed to check the PortableApps directory relativ to its own location (so its really protable)

I understand this is default settings for updater to not list apps already installed.
This fails even after have settings.ini to have OnlyInstalledApps=0 set from config page. It would be better if you make it easier for advanced user to have local/available releases listed.
Suggestion : Is it possible to have option to keep downloaded packages instead of delete after install by default.
After the foray into the theme area, back to the updater...
This version (Alpha9) Seems very stable at least for me.
Alpha 10 Requests:
Modification of the settings dialogue (IE Components check mark doesn't do anything that i can tell)
'Please Wait / Please Wait' this appears just after download of the database, one Please wait is fine, maybe change it to "please wait / Checking Versions"
Tool Tips for options window items
New help.htm with up to date detail on currently used entries.
IE is NOOK still used, if so what is it?
Possibly have a settings.ini file with all options shown with comments on what they do in the install.

Not sure about anyone else, but i think it is now stable enough to be a beta, or do we need the help sorted first?
I know that the specs are using mainly inis. But for avoiding the ugly Drupal overhead maybe we could switch to XML. It would allow for having an updater.xml without the overhead being destructive (html, xml they are almost the same, make the updater look inside the html tags for the xml ones ), and would allow for extensibility (better extensibility I mean) and tidier code.
Also, why not providing the file without being trough Drupal (I mean FTP uploading it)? That way Drupal would not produce that ugly code.
I run Updater from same drive in which PortableApps is located. For PortableApps with 7Zip present it is c:\PortableApps so updater is executed from C:\PortableApps\PortableUpdater\. This is case it does not show me local version if all apps are set in options.
Now E:\PortableApps has same copy of applications and version which is present on drive exception to 7-Zip. Updater in this case is executed from E:\PortableApps\PortabelUpdater. It then shows me 7-Zip at first app available with no local version available.
The Bug in this case for me is when 7-zip is present in PortableApps folder it fails to show up in list as already installed with version info.
As suggest I removed 7-Zip from C:\PortableApps and then executed updater. 7-Zip appeared as 1st option to install. After successful installation of 7-zip and re-running updater it again fails to show 7-zip in list as already installed and ver info.
Installed up to date apps do not appear in the list.
If you have set the option to see all apps, then you will see all available apps not currently installed, and any applications that are installed that are not the latest version.
For instance.
If Application x, y & z all show in the list as needing updating, but you untick z, then the next time the updater is run, only application z will show up.
You mean it doesn't show applications that are up to date? If that's what you're saying, why would it? I'm not positive, but I don't think that's the purpose of the show all apps setting, I think that's to show the ones you do not have installed as well.
1. delete packages is default, the user temp folder is default (this was still discussed)
2. hide option page will be default next version

the usb drive in ptmb's icon. Maybe use the usb drive used in the splash screens?

I think everyone would be happy if you could start a new thread next time...

Last time I've opened a new tread there was some very unhappy comments...
But I think with the next version we can start a new thread to separate the Beta from the past Alphas

I vectorized the down arrow from nuoveXT and I can upload it you you want, already red
And how about joining forces from everyone for new and better ideas, can Marko, or someone, open a tread for making the Updater Icon?

... cause this will be a real hint that the updater is part of PortableApps.com
If I save it in ico format there is a black background without transparancy ... is there a trick or a short way to get it into ico?

you don't need a converter. icofx opens image files, exes, ico, and a lot more for you to edit and save in the PA format. and it has a portable version.
I use IcoFx trough wine, it is easier than using GIMP for that.

Why does it say "No actualization needed"
May the Shwartz be with you
I have updated to Alpha 9 and to be perfectly honest...
I think I changed that in the SVN repo...
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
The language select dialogue no-longer appears
The configuration page is only available over the command line switch /SHOWOP.
The message was'nt changed, cause my focus on Alpha9 was fixing the config page and version control issues and to get Alpha9 as stable as Alpha7.
But if Ryan will change the string in svn it will be in the next version
The icon was the last I've got (the source for the other icon was lost in transit on the first try) and now we have an own icon-thread.
I'll check why the self-update from Alpha8 to Alpha9 don't work to prevent this problem for the next version.
Thank You for feedback

ah right (but i didn't understand "Configuration page over /SHOWOP parameter only"), now i understand
Right, makes perfect sense, ta
Again righto
Did anyone else have this problem. I haven't updated my other stick so i have one more opportunity to try if you want anything checked.
I have updated my other stick, while it was connected to Win Xp.
It went of without a hitch, so the problem may be limited to Vista.
I've thought of something. Adding the updater to the buttons on the left would make it look a little more 'official'.
Right now, it seems very separate from the actual platform (More like a 'mod').
What do you think? Should it be more integrated into the menu?
Signature automatically removed for containing links
I dont think it can be done from within this application. It would need to be built into the menu system which is also currently in beta (unofficial).
You can however modify your theme (at least the ones that run under the unofficial beta).
For instance, i have the PSP theme, which runs an external exe to eject the drive.
I copied this part of theme.ini added to [CustomButtons]:
4=BTN_Update
Modified the copied code to suit my needs.
Made a shortcut to portableappsupdater.exe in the same place within the Theme as eject.exe and renamed it to 'updater'
Works like a charm
Thanks for the idea
So, what are the scripts before and after the modification.

you dont need an ink file, the problem is that a ink file not work on every pc. its better you use a relative path....(look at my post)

As i played around a bit more, i noticed the 'Margin' setting. So Caption works fine if you need it.

I suck at relative paths, one or 2 dirs is OK but get to many and i loose where i am.
Cheers, i have now modified most of my installed themes to have a update 'button'

Hi,
Tested having 7-ZipPortable in C:\PortableApps folder. Updater A9 does not list 7-Zip as already installed or update available if settings.ini is set to show all apps
Settings.ini
[General]
Language=1033
[Proxy]
Proxy_Adr=auto
Proxy_User=
Proxy_PW=
[Show]
OnlyInstalledApps=0
Welcome=0
Options=0
Components=0
Finish=0
[Cleanup]
pdel=0
[update]
ufile=
ofile=
wget_options=
Now If I copy C:\PortableApps to E:\PortableApps and delete 7-ZipPortable folder and then run same updater a9 from E:\PortableApps\PortableAppsUpdater folder 7-Zip is listed as available install.
7-Zip is latest version.

Nikhil Bendre
... where it is installed and run it.
So if You have a directory c:\portableapps You have to install the updater in this directory and run it from this directory too.
There is no scan for other directories, cause updater is designed to check the PortableApps directory relativ to its own location (so its really protable)

Hi,
I tried a new test on another machine.
1. Created a folder C:\PortableApps
2. Download PA UpA9
3. Installed to C:\PortableApps
4. Executed Updater.exe /showop. Settings.ini created in Data folder
---[General]
Language=1033
[Proxy]
Proxy_Adr=auto
Proxy_User=
Proxy_PW=
[Show]
OnlyInstalledApps=0
Welcome=0
Options=0

5. Executed Updater.
6. Selected CommandPromptPortable.
7. Installed app
8. Executed Updater again
9. CommandPrompt failed to be listed from available list.
10. Executed Updater again. selected 7-zip.
11. Installed and ran updater again 7-zip disappears from available list
12. Executed Updater again. selected abiword
13. Installed and ran updater again abiword disappears from available list
With Regards,
Nikhil Bendre
After the foray into the theme area, back to the updater...
This version (Alpha9) Seems very stable at least for me.
Alpha 10 Requests:
IE is NOOK still used, if so what is it?
Possibly have a settings.ini file with all options shown with comments on what they do in the install.
E.G.
[update]
#batch=true installs in silent mode
batch=true
#tempdir= download location for application packages
tempdir=c:\temp
[Blacklist]
#appname=true hides from update list
FirefoxPortable=true
Not sure about anyone else, but i think it is now stable enough to be a beta, or do we need the help sorted first?
I also still want to know why it even picks up old versions. It is getting the updates from the official PA website, right?
Simplifying daily life through technology
It gets them from an ini file and if noone updates the ini file...

What INI file? I mean where it gets its online updates from, not the old app version.

The PA updater relies on an outside source for it's updates? That's weird. why don't we have PA make their own INI file
Simplifying daily life through technology
That site is Marko's he keeps it updated himself
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
we have no real ftp / http source on pa.com (at the moment) for it.
I can switch it back to https://portableapps.com/updater.ini, but this will bring the ugly drupal overhead back to the ini.
The informations for the installed versions come from the appinfo.inis.
The benefit is that every mod or the one how is set as author is able to hold it up to date.

Hi,
I run Updater from same drive in which PortableApps is located.
With Regards,
Nikhil Bendre
Try reinstalling 7 zip.
Simplifying daily life through technology
Hi,
As suggest I removed 7-Zip from C:\PortableApps and then executed updater. 7-Zip appeared as 1st option to install. After successful installation of 7-zip and re-running updater it again fails to show 7-zip in list as already installed and ver info.
With Regards,
Nikhil Bendre
Installed up to date apps do not appear in the list.
If you have set the option to see all apps, then you will see all available apps not currently installed, and any applications that are installed that are not the latest version.
For instance.
If Application x, y & z all show in the list as needing updating, but you untick z, then the next time the updater is run, only application z will show up.
You mean it doesn't show applications that are up to date? If that's what you're saying, why would it? I'm not positive, but I don't think that's the purpose of the show all apps setting, I think that's to show the ones you do not have installed as well.
