As I outlined in this comment, I think that we need to vote for some new Ops in the PortableApps.com IRC at irc.freenode.net #portableapps. The current Ops in the channel are Ryan, Patrick, John, Tim, and I. It is, however, up to us as to who actually gets in there. If all of you vote for someone that we agree with, then we'll do it. If we don't agree with your decision, we'll take a different guy.
Here are the guidelines: I'd like to get one nomination for each member, and thereon each vote will count as one vote. You cannot vote for/nominate yourself. Once again, this is up to the Ops as to who is actually added.
Here are the current votes/nominations:
- Zach Hudock: 5
- Zach Thibeau: 4
- Jacob Mastel: 2
I nominate Zach Huddock
he's been around a while, good dev, plays well on the IRC, doesn't abuse power
but maybe all the Mods and Admins of the forums should be ops to, that woudl kinda make sense

Zach's a great guy, but I haven't seen him on IRC much either.
I like the idea of having all the forum mods do it, that would make sense.
He's on. Just not in #portableapps.
I would agree with that, if only he were on more.

Yes, no offense to Logan, but I don't think he has enough experience.
Logan: Really, no offense intended.

It's 'LOGAN'. His name is not Logan, but his nick is LOGAN.
My mistake.
Sorry, LOGAN. Not only did I disagree with nominating you, but I butchered your nick.

Na na na, come on!
thanks for the support David
your friendly neighbourhood moderator Zach Thibeau
I vote: no one.
Reasoning: Ideally, we don't have anyone as ops in the channel. The forum moderators are voiced to show that they are official moderators/developers. If there's anyone who doesn't have auto-voice for their nick but thinks they should, mention it here and I'll add the correct privileges. The only time we need ops is to remove a spammer/flamer/general-annoyance, and this doesn't happen. The only *other* reason is if we need to go to the Freenode staff for something, in which case we should discuss and confirm in the forums first. The only person permanently opped on the channel is ChanServ, for obvious reasons.
Thus ends the essay. Happy reading.

The forum moderators are voiced to show that they are official moderators/developers.
Patrick is the only one I see on a consistent basis. I see Steve Lamerton on occasion. I haven't seen you, but that's probably because of time zone issues. Are developers voiced or only moderators/developers? If so, that's about 10 lightyears ahead of us, as we have few moderator/developers in the channel.
The only time we need ops is to remove a spammer/flamer/general-annoyance, and this doesn't happen
Point taken. But at some point you will. If a chan op isn't available, you have a problem.
(My apologies to everyone, I've been massively busy in the last few weeks and haven't managed to read everything. I do promise to read every unread post though and get back to the Scribus topic. )
Dually Noted.
My point is that while we may not need more chan ops now, we will need them eventually. We have Patrick to thanks for bringing the channel to life again. I see no one who has chan op privileges in there on a consistent basis. I believe it needs to be so that we have someone with chan op privileges at any given point in the day.
This is a pole. We like the idea. You don't like the idea and have supported your position. Now, I pick at it, make up my position.
Someone else may now pick.

Yes, but you see the reason we aren't opped is because we aren't needed. Freenode itself recommends to stay deopped unless needed.
To op ourselves on the channel takes 2 seconds in a PM to ChanServ. However, most commands can be done with ChanServ exclusively.
i.e. Say a spammer comes on to the channel. We have 2 possible options here:
/msg ChanServ op #portableapps
,/mode +b spammer
and/kick spammer
/msg ChanServ akick #portableapps spammer
In case number 2, we don't need to be opped at all and ChanServ does all the work for us. This also has the advantage that it's anonymous and the identity of the op is hidden.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Maybe it's just me, but I can't get that to work. (Don't worry, I'm working on my own channel :P) When you use the akick command, ChanServ asks me whether I want to add to, delete from, or list the akick list. So, in my case, I'll type
/msg ChanServ akick #kevinporter add spammer
. However, this does absolutely nothing. (And rightly so, I can't imagine Freenode.net implementing something into ChanServ that allows those that aren't Opped to kick a user.) Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've done exactly what you say will ban and kick a user. Also, maybe I'm naive, but I fail to see where anonymity is necessary in kicking/banning a spammer. In any case, if someone wanted to see who the Ops are, they could view the access list (
/msg ChanServ access #portableapps list
)."Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
Is the channel registered and do you have full permissions on the access list? ChanServ works off the access list for a channel, not on whether you are opped or not. I can confirm that I have deleted and added a few bans using AKICK.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Yes and yes. I have full permissions and my channel is registered. Kind of odd, no?

I have yet to hear from anyone else as to nominations or votes, and I (don't recall) speaking to Patrick or Ryan (other then the below comments) about adding another Op.
Recently in the IRC I was discussing with other users that we really need more Ops, as evidenced by a recent problem with the user truthseeker. If you want to know about it, alpha1 or I can send you the logs. Anyhow, we seriously need more Ops, especially with the increased traffic that the IRC and the site has been receiving lately. If you notice, we've hit a big spike in users registering.
My opinion on this is that more Ops are better than less. I just entered the IRC this morning with no Ops there. I'm the only one. If a spammer came in before I joined, they couldn't have done a thing. Not cool. I see no reason to fight this, but then again I could be wrong.

Kevin's Right, we need more ops
I come in and sometimes I'm there for a few hours before there's an op there, and even when there is they aren't always there physically. in my opinion, there should always be 1 Op that is there and active, and not 3 feet from the keyboard, working on something and paying no attention to the IRC
@Ryan, please make at least 1 more Op, even if they don't have full permissions, they should be able to Kick/ban/mute the channel as well as appoint a voice or another Op, at least for a short time, if needed.
Anyone agree with me that Jacob Mastel would make a good op?
Lead, Follow, or get out of the way.
Sure. Actually, I've registered #portableapps.com. If nothing happens (again), I promise to be a good dictator. I'll set more the 18th. Would you send me the logs with truthseeker? Let me know if you need my email

Tim, you're learning. I had no idea how to use the /me command only a year or two ago. You're an excellent moderator, and you're just getting your IRC legs. Give it a while.
