Firefox Portable

Does the plugins and the add-ons store information in the local computer?

Submitted by logooftx on November 29, 2008 - 3:17pm

Hi,
I understand that Firefox portable itself doesn't store anything in the local computer, but does the plugins and the add-ons that we are using on the firefox portable storing anything on the computer?
I'm currently using Shockwave Plugin, Dictionaries & Language Packs and DownloadHelper 3.5.1(which I chanegd the download location).

Oh, and when I go to K:\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins, I can only find np32dsw.dll, does that mean DownloadHelper is not installed on the usb key or something like that?

Thanks in advance

XUL.mfl

Submitted by joesmith07 on November 29, 2008 - 4:04am

The other day I posted a topic saying that all of my bookmarks disappeared (I have since restored them due to the nifty "bookmarkbackups"). That feature saved my life! Anyway, when I was backing up my portable apps, I received the following two eror messages:

Cannot copy XUL: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Cannot copy backup-6.session: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

My first question, is what exactly is the role of the XUL.mfl file and why may it have been corrupted? Perhaps an unsafe removal of my thumb drive?

"Show my windows and tabs from last time" doesn't work

Submitted by Frank1 on November 27, 2008 - 4:30pm

I setup in Tools\Options\Main When my firefox starts: "Show my windows and tabs from last time" instaed of "Show my home page".

When I have a website shown and exit firefox portable, then launch again my home page shows instead of the website I had before.

What could be wrong?
Thank you

Installing extention *.xpi with error

Submitted by Frank1 on November 27, 2008 - 4:12pm

Trying to install extension with .xpi.
The Plugins window doesn't allow installation. I entered the local address on my hard drive into the address bar and showed me the files in the directory. Double clicked the .xpi I want to install and gave me the option to install.

It started to insall but gave me an error -
"Could not install the file:
location
because: Install script not found
-204"

What is this Install script, and where do I find it?
Thanks

Any about:config values I can edit for speed?

Hey, I am running Firefox on my flash drive, with Portable Apps, and it's quite slow. The USB drive is 2.0, and the computers are 2.0 high speed so it's got to be firefox.

it's not a problem, works at home great but when I am on the go it's a little slow loading pages and typing stuff. I was just wondering if there is a tutorial on how to make firefox run a bit faster, without adding any plugins.

Thanks!

Add on's and extensions install themselves when using other computers.

I have recently used my portable version of Firefox on another computer which already had Firefox on it's HDD. The computer I used also had AVG Free AntiVirus installed on it with AVG Security Toolbar installed on it.

When I started Firefox portable from my USB key, The AVG security toolbar was installed on my version of Firefox portable. But when I went back to my home machine, the toolbar was no longer there.

Help: All my bookmarks disappeared!

Submitted by joesmith07 on November 26, 2008 - 8:41pm

Today, I unplugged my Titanium SanDisk Cruzer and an error message came up quickly for only a second saying "corrupt file" or something to that effect. When I plugged my drive back in and opened Firefox Portable, all of my bookmarks on my bookmark toolbar had vanished and there is nothing in the folder either. The last time I backed up was in Sept. Is there anyway to recover these files and what do you think happened?

Cache handling

I can't explain the source of this problem, or recover from it.
Running 2.0.0.16 everything worked as I wanted it: as sites are visited, the directory Data/profile/Cache grows and grows. I upgraded to 2.0.0.18, set everything under Tools -> Options as for 16 but, try as I might, I can't get the Cache to grow. I have "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" unchecked, and "Use up to 3072 MB of space for the cache" (not 0). But the directory remains stubbornly sparse.
