Application: Opera
Category: Internet
Description: Safe, secure, powerful and fully customizable, the Opera Web browser is faster and more secure than other browsers available on the market. Opera delivers robust security and a far-richer feature set than any other Web browser and it's free.
Opera is the Web pioneer that delivered tabbed browsing in 2000, and Opera 9.2 features lots of other great tricks for quick navigation, including Speed Dial, a quick way to put all of your favorite daily sites at your fingertips. You can also take, save and trade Notes attached to any Web site while browsing, or Create Search shortcuts from any search field on the Web. Opera 9.27 is super fast and free, secure and stable, and offers lots of great tools for Web Developers.
If you are looking for more of a Stealth Portable Opera check out OperaTor or check out Opera Portable by Kejut those sites both offer a good portable opera, I recomment OperaTor if your looking for more privacy, but you will have to sacrafice some load time for it.

Is this to be considered a development test?
If so what level.
It looks like you were still working on it earlier today?
https://portableapps.com/node/12453
There is no mention of beta or dev in your link
If it is final, could you tell us what kind of testing you did?
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
I added its development test and used the beta post template. Hmm. Its odd how usually i get a load of downloads but nobody ever posts any positive or negative feedback. For example, DvdShrink only got comments the first day and nobody ever commented negative feedback. Well i guess they had no problems i hope. I was hoping i could get some feedback on this, to make sure it works properly, and maybe there are settings left behind. Wait come to think of it i think there are settings left in the %temp% folder. In my next release ill make sure this gets deleted.

Just wondering what would be best.
1. The Opera folder in Temp gets deleted or.....
2. I have it copied to Data folder then deleted from Temp folder, and move it back to Temp folder when it is launched again.
I was wondering about this because sometimes files are saved in there, in "Opera\temporary download", usually its video clips that are viewed in the browser itself.
Idk if this is a good idea, because after a while the "Opera" folder will become too big.

Nathan, you keep forgetting to close your tags, there an em tag you didn't close somewhere in your above post. Check first next time please.
I found this version http://www.filefactory.com/file/05d0a8/
I prefer to use Opera Usb 9.26 with Flash and Grafik blocker, its a shame this v9.27 doesn't include it, maybe someone knows how to add this to v9.27 using some content from v9.26???? Any feedback will be appreciated.
Thank You
i will update to 9.27 as soon as i can. should be an update later today, i just have to make a few changes to the launcher. Also im sure the flash blocker and grafik blocker is still there, if not, it probably wont be possible to add it to 9.27

I just downloaded opera 9.27 from the official page and it still has flash blocker and grafik blocker. I think if you downloaded it from the link u posted, whomever made it probably modified it.

Would it be better if i made a launcher for the non-portable usb one or just keep the one that i have that uses opera usb?
I was wondering this because I have had a lot of issues because of the multiple .ini files that opera-usb uses, such as folders being created in weird paths, and sometimes even files.

Now you can choose to use Opera-Usb or just Opera, please read above. Please report any bugs for Opera Portable

Please make sure that you do not run OperaPortable on a computer that already has Opera as you will get problems. Also please use a fresh install of Opera, and if you have previously had Opera before make sure to remove its folder from Program folder, and if you can delete the registy key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients" to avoid another problem. If this is too hard or complicated I recommend just using Opera-Usb, which has fewer problems.

It is strongly recommended that you delete the other release and manually add everything back into this one. Issues mentioned above should be fixed if you use this new release. Please read above for more detail of what was fixed

Opera 9.5 has been released.
Just an FYI, but since you said you were going away for a while over the summer, I was wondering what you wanted to do with this. I use Opera as my backup browser, and I wouldn't mind updating this for you until you want to take it back. I was workin with Opera@USB 9.5, and I got two HKCU keys, Software\Opera Software (already in the launcher) and Software\Netscape.
Alright im cool with that, i should be back in a few weeks, probably like 2 or so. So yeah I guess you could always make a new forum for the new opera-usb until I get back. Then if you want to you can always let me use your updated opera-usb Portable for this forum, or I can always go back and update it, it doesnt matter. Thanks for letting me know about the update, ill see whats new when I get back.

Opera has released their own portable version called Opera@USB. I dled it yesterday and have been using it. It works great so far.
http://www.opera-usb.com/
Opera@USB is not an official product. It's by a third-party developer like most other portable stuff out there.
Look at the copyright notice on the bottom of the page:
"a project by markus obermair 2008"
And on the About page:
"Opera@USB and Opera@U3 is a private project of markus obermair austria."
Wow. I didn't notice. Thanks for pointing that out. Either way though, it seems to work flawlessly.
Yeah, it does indeed work great. I used to use it before I switched to Chrome. Both Chrome and Opera are so much faster than Firefox.
Opera, and My Opera actually do endorse this version - both for U3 and vanilla USB sticks!

Can you please update to the Opera 10 on Opera-usb.com? The executable op.com has changed so can someone please fix that? Thanks, it will be appreciated.

I have tested the Launcher, indeed, my language (In German) does not store opuses. Please update the Launcher.

you don't need a launcher with OperaUSB. I mean it works just fine by putting the files in the PAF directory. and Opera10 (USB) has only one exe file - it shows up just fine in the PAF menu with a beautiful icon. I've used it on win2000 and XP.

Does it leave information behind on the host system though? Folders or registry keys.
PortableApps.com Advocate
I don't believe portable opera has ever left anything in the registry, but you have to ask a programmer who would know how to check for that.
it does leave a cache dir in here:
C:\Documents and Settings\cecilia\Local Settings\Temp
but it's empty when you close opera and that can easily be deleted. if that really bugs you i'm sure some clever person can make one of those scripts that automatically deletes it
"No one man can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices." - Edward R. Murrow
opera@USB doesn't really leave any data behind.
I do think though that opera portable does (if you update your operaportable\app\opera\).
I know that firefox had to be edited to store data portably (hence the data folder), so my guess is that that opera does that too.
I myself use opera@usb (not the PA version) as my backup browser and my browser for older computers/operating systems.
The reason we need an update is because the executable for the opera-usb is op.com but now there is no op.com so we need to update it so that we can use opera 10.

K I'll try to get something out this weekend or tomorrow. I've been busy with school so all my priorities are on school currently. But once the weekend comes I'll probably release updates for a few of my applications. I'm hoping things will settle a bit at school so I can manage a few projects on this site but that probably wont be for a couple of weeks or even months till that happens. I'm not sure if this is still written in NSIS but I might just write an ahk script since I'm more familiar with that. I also might make the new script optionally read an INI file if found in the root directory with the launcher so if you want you can change paths to the executables or output directory of the temp files. So if there is any suggestions on this INI file as what it should cover let me know as I'm open to suggestions for it and I'll let you know if it can be done.

1) Is operator portable?
2) I'm deciding to update to Opera 10 and I don't know what I should back-up and where it is.
3) What are your thoughts on The Opera Portable Personal that was released as the portable version of Opera 10 on Kejut's website.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I Use Opera10USB and have used Opera(insert number) for years. and the various versions from Kejut. all work well.
Kejut's Opera makes temp files in the host C: (the typical users temp dir). basically opens the opera files in there and when you close the files go away. maybe an empty dir is left - I forget now - I'm posting from linux.
I have found that when using PAF it's easier to use OperaUSB to fiddle with ones setting files. and the Opera files you want to backup are all in the Profile dir.
opera6.adr - your bookmarks
wand.dat - your passwords
notes.adr - your notes (I love this feature)
styles/ - whatever javascripts you have that you want to keep
skin/ - Opera skins
and any other personal stuff that are not default......sessions, special menus, whatever
Opera/program/plugins - these are also good to save assuming they are uptodate
I would recomend not upgrading Opera10 over a previous version. do a clean install. Opera10 seems to have a few differnt configurations than opera9.* and a clean install may prevent problems. I generally use the portable versions before installing any new Opera because I need to make sure Opera works perfectly.
"No one man can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices." - Edward R. Murrow
1) Well I'm not sure if it is portable but I have used it before and if your willing to give up some speed for security then I would recommend it.
3) Well I know for one that it was written using NSIS I just dont know how and what he is doing to redirect certain things. But it does cleanup after itself so I would recommend it.
But just to let you know I believe my launcher pretty much does the same as Kejut's but I will try to make this more user friendly and more efficient in the next release here in the next day or so. I actually had a thought about the temp files. I know for one when I used Opera Usb that if there is important info in the folder Opera creates that it should probably be encrypted before it is deleted. Let me know any thoughts on this. I might look for specific folders to encrypt but it might be useful so if those files are recovered then they would be encrypted.

Please try it out and let me know how it goes. You can also put the Opera-UsbPortable.ini found in the Source folder in the root folder of the launcher and it will read and update things according to what you put in there. Later I will try to get this to automatically compress and download Opera-Usb but the downloading part is gonna be the hardest since they always change URL's when something is updated. This does remove the registry it creates and also deletes its TEMP folder called opera10. Enjoy and any feedback on any problems that come up would be appreciated.

the splash screen doesn't work it just goes to opera usb 10
60\/\/ 2 /\/\3 4 1 4/\/\ 12007
bow to me for i am root
Can anyone confirm this? Im pretty sure that the splash comes up. Just make sure you dont have Opera-UsbPortable in the same directory as the launcher and make sure "DisableSplash" is set to false. If its like that then it should work but currently at the moment I cant check because Im using linux as Ive been having some problems with windows.

I can confirm this and after a look in the launcher source there is reference to CCleanerPortable.jpg which probably should be Opera-USBPortable.jpg.

I must not have updated that sorry. Ill get on a friends computer in a bit and make that change and update it. So it should be updated in about an hour.

Yes, you can! :))
John T. Haller said me a months ago, that PA.com do it oneself portable version (paf)
If you dont want to wait for allowing by John ... you could easy portabilaze version from www.opera-usb.com zipped (all directories and files really stay behind portable drive, no registry entries there ... so true portable .... You could convert to PA.com format in little time I think.
thx, computerfreaker

I, for one, take that to mean "wait; it'll be ready when it's ready".
Yeah, I could take Opera@USB (or even Opera itself, since IIRC Opera@USB is an almost-completely-intact Opera) and toss a quick PAL launcher together; I'd be happy to, if John says it's OK.

If you would like to update this then by all means you can. Ive been really busy lately and I haven't really been able to update any of my projects. So go for it if you would like. Good Luck!

Oh, and also, he changed his mind on it since John said he'll do it officially... You can see that from his post above.
My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.
I'm back, on a very limited basis (spring break ftw!), and I am willing to do it if John gives the O.K. Until he says OK, though, I don't want to throw a monkey wrench in the works.

We did our own Opera release as a pre-release yesterday. The launcher and installer are open source. We're actually using the PA.c Launcher for it to handle all the file moving and updating as you move PCs.
We tried contacting Opera@USB for months but never heard back so we did our own (called Opera, Portable Edition so there is no confusion) with Opera's permission. Opera@USB doesn't adjust paths as you move anyway, so it would be insufficient for our needs.

I've used Opera as my main browser for years. it's very reliable and fast. it comes with many features that other browsers have to add.
"No one man can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices." - Edward R. Murrow
other than that it is pretty cool
It is not open source (?)
I'm liking SeaMonkey
I'll use Opera now and then, but using more than one email program is not cool, though I guess Imap kind of fixes that... we shall see (no imap for windows live?, not that that matters
Still looking for other webmail alternatives to google, etc.)
;>jamvaru
GMail is the best email out there.
and it's easy to change them.
while I am a huge fan of linux, not everything in the universe has to be open source.
I have never used Opera email. but I also have never used an email program (not even when I used an Amiga)
I like keeping my email thing easy. I just use the web pages for email.
my point is that Opera is flexible and lets the user do what THEY want to do.
I love Opera Notes. LOVE LOVE LOVE. and if you don't know what that is you are missing a really nice little feature.
Opera can open html5 files
there's other great features that Opera has...
I'm not selling Opera, btw. I get nothing by saying any of this. I am just a fan. I even like some other browsers like FF. It's just that I really get the most out of Opera.
"No one man can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices." - Edward R. Murrow
you said there was another thing... ?
and gmail is not the 'best', it is just the most popular, hell you can't even sort by columns
Using IMAP with an email client is very nice. You can set it so you have the flexibility to use multiple email clients, such as Seamonkey and Opera and Thunderbird, etc.
Everything SHOULD be open source. What are they hiding? I suppose they make some money on business accounts, perhaps, or ads? Whatever. It is still the beginnings of the future (till we reach the Star Trek level of evolution).
I like opera, but it still has trouble with some websites, it seems, unless I am doing something wrong ?
;>jamvaru
in YOUR opinion.
I love Linux and try to make my systems multiboot and have used Linux for years, but not everything has to be open source.
for me, Opera is perfect

The Amiga had an email client? I thought the Internets wasn't invented back then.
had email programs, telnet programs, ftp programs, browsers.......it had lots of things. Amiga was way ahead of it's time.
I was using an Amiga when I first accessed the internet sometime in the 90's. I wasn't browsing, but email, BBS's and message lists were common then.
