Failed to update user configuration file

This is probably an XP question, but it is driving me crazy. I install programs as admin and run them in user accounts. Toucan is the first program I have encountered where this fails. I get "failed to update user configuration file" when it starts and ends, so I can't save any jobs. I had installed in Program Files, but moved everything to Shared Documents/Shared programs, as I thought the location might be a problem. Then I went into the Toucan directory and TRIED to turn off read-only on all files and folders. Best I can tell, XP let me make the files read/write, not the folders. If I click on file properties, read-only is not checked. If I click on the properties of a folder (one I just turned off the read-only attribute), it shows the read-only box as checked. I assume I just somehow need to get XP to let all the users write to the Toucan/Data directory, but XP is defeating my every attempt at doing that. Neither will XP let me run the program as admin (which I don't really want to do anyway). Could some XP guru give me some help?

Would

you mind posting the full path that you did install it to in the end? Also if you look in the data folder and open up on of the ini files, then try and modify it and save it does it work?

path

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documemts\Shared Programs\Toucan

I can edit any of the files in the Data folder. The problem seems to be that Toucan is trying to delete the file and not just update it. XP is letting me change permissions on files, but not folders.

05:28:35: can't remove file 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shared Programs\Toucan\Data\Jobs.ini' (error 5: access is denied.)
05:28:35: Failed to update user configuration file.

I tried turning off simple file sharing and then opened up permissions on the Data folder and turned simple file sharing back on. The first user account I tried running Toucan from worked, but not any others. I'd rather not have to permanently disable simple file sharing just to allow multiple users to run Toucan.

So

are you trying to allow multiple users to use Toucan at once? I am afraid this is not supported and indeed will not work, as you have found.

multiple users

Our machines are shared by myself, my wife and my son. The latter mostly browse the web and download viruses. I was hoping I could set up three jobs in Toucan. The jobs would backup the home directories of each one of us to a portable hard drive. So if my wife was on, she could run her job and synch to her directory on the backup drive. Likewise, if my son was on, he could do the same by running a job named after him. So that is multiple users, but not multiple simultaneous users. It would seem to me that if the .ini files were read when each user started Toucan, this scheme would work. I can run Toucan from each account, it's just whatever Toucan does with the configuration files at the start that is causing problems.

I

am very confused by this, you should be able to do exactly what you want, and I have never had anyone else report an issue like this. Toucan shouldn't be trying to delete the jobs.ini file at all however, so this is slightly concerning, what version of Toucan are you using?

EDIT: Johns reply here might help too: https://portableapps.com/node/20095#comment-124029
