But isn't John doing one already? (to be built in to the platfrom IIRC)
“There is a computer disease that anybody who works with computers knows about. It's a very serious disease and it interferes completely with the work. The trouble with computers is that you 'play' with them!”Richard Feynman
at the time I actually started working on PAU (which was about... a year ago I think), there weren't any serious steps made in this direction and I really hated the constant nagging of newer, non-portable versions and checking the website/feed again and again for a new release. So... I made the PortableApps Updater which seems to be working great
At some point I sent John an email asking for an opinion, but soon after that, something screwed up my email settings and some emails don't make it to that inbox, so I don't know if John actually replied or not
But anyway... I'm happy to receive any feedback (so thank you for your appreciation)
1. Freeware, for both personal and commercial use. As I said on my homepage: You can use it wherever you want, just don't try to reverse engineer/decompile it or something like that...
2. What problems did you experience exactly? I've just checked and PAU detected the right versions and downloaded them successfully
3. I'm not sure I understand... Recheck? You can set PAU to check for newer versions every 1/2/3 hours (from the Settings window). Isn't that what you're looking for?
4. Why shouldn't it exist? After all PAU downloads the apps from the path provided by John... If that wouldn't be valid, nobody could download the app...
5. It shouldn't be over the Games tab... Very strange... I'll move those two buttons at the bottom of the window
oh, I understand now... I didn't think about that... I mean... Why not use Check&Run in the first place? (I don't understand why did you go through each option, instead of choosing the one that interests you the most...). I can add an option to check if the installer isn't already in the destination folder, but it's a bit silly, if you want my opinion
I've tried all options cause that's the way many people will do it. That's the result of many questions and hints I've got in the past for the PortableApps.com Updater.
And yes I know the trouble with wrong app.ini entries too
Take You all the time You need for the update

Well, all options were thoroughly tested individually, since each user chooses one and sticks with it.
Audacity is indeed out of my reach...
My latest project is almost complete, so tomorrow I'll surely find the time to update PAU. Maybe even add the check-from-tray option...
Thanks for the heads up anyway. If you have any other suggestions, please don't hesitate to post them here or, even better, on PAU's support forum, which I monitor a lot closer.
OK, I've updated PAU's interface. Please download the latest version and if you still have a problem with the GUI, post a new topic on PAU's support forum with a screenshot attached. Thanks!
This is not PAU's website, this is not a support forum for PAU and, most importantly, PAU is my app, therefore I don't intend to make a habit out of offering support/feedback here.
Didn't know about the icon, I'll update it in the next release.
I didn't say patented, I said it was a registered trademark. Which it is. (Not sure why the Your Digital Life, Anywhere&trade in the header here is just marked as ™ rather than ®, in the installers it's ®).

Even if it's not even protected, for whatever reason (trademark? patent? copyright? I'm writing a novel -- I should know these things -- but for now, I'm a rookie), those who work with and around PortableApps.com should assume good faith and respect the owner's wishes.
Trademarks, patents & designs, are not subject to copyright and are registrable for a set period of time.
Copyright on the other hand is not a registrable entity but is rather an assignable right and serves to protect content as a published work, not as a concept or idea and depending on how similar one work is to another and the relative age of a particular work, copyright is deemed to be owned by whomever publishes a product, not necessarily the person who wrote something.
Having said that, with things like music there are multiple copyrights which are observed, namely music, lyrics and the recorded work, as well as the published final work, for things like literary works there is only a single copyright, unless of course there are pictures.
Just curious. I always wonder when people start making pronouncements about copyright laws, software licenses, etc., whether they are giving professional opinions, or they are just giving their interpretation of info they've found on the net.

You'll need to change some things with this. First off, you can't use the PortableApps.com logo for it as it is not a PortableApps.com app.
Second, you can't call it PortableApps.com Updater as PortableApps.com Updater is a trademark of ours (and what our updater has been called for a year) and PortableApps.com is a registered trademark of ours. Calling it PortableApps Updater, PA.c Updater or something similar is too close to the name trademark-wise, so you can't use something like that, either. Something like Portable Software Update would be fine.
Third, you can't promote it here unless it's open source and in PortableApps.com Format, as it's a violation of the forum guidelines. As your software appears to be closed source, I've removed the link from your main post.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
You need to have a progress bar for the downloads, eg., pause, cancel etc., as you have no idea what's going on with a slow connection and it crashes with too much clicking on the GUI.
I said I'll change the icon and name, so no need to argue about ™ and ®. Hopefully, that will make everybody happy...
@muswell: Trying to implement one, but it seems a bit buggy to me, especially on Vista/7, although others haven't encountered any of my problems. Anyway, rest assured, it's on my to-do list
Don't know why, but I was expecting a liitle bit more good feedback here, for an utility that was intended to make the life of thousands PA fans a lot easier...
I think first of all, there IS an earlier app that is intended to be incorporated into the menu. There are a lot of issues wrapped up in the next release.
The other thing that could help is to post an official posting in the beta testing forum. This is the accepted format: https://portableapps.com/node/11965
That may get you some more useful feedback.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
Well, we already have an official updater in the works to be released in the next menu beta. Have you considered working with the current developers on the official updater?
Well, I'm sorry if I offended anybody by offering an alternative, I didn't know there can be only one.....
I'm being mean, but I didn't expect this kind of reaction from you guys...
Being a part of "the team" isn't quite possible because PAU is not written in the same language as the rest of the apps and, most importantly, because as John already mentioned, closed source apps aren't welcomed here (and I don't intended to make it open-source)
Being closed source is not the problem. Heck, PortableApps even started distributing freeware applications recently! The problem is, the new updater is being integrated into the official menu, which is fully open source, meaning everyone will have it, and all other updaters will become unnecessary. PA has registered trademarks for their updater, similar to how FireFox has trade marks on their title, so the name belongs to them.
If you'd like to develop closed source applications and have them packaged here, thats fine. But PA is creating their own offical updater, and do not need any other updaters to confuse everyone. If there weren't an official updater in the works, this would probably have gotten a better reaction. But for right now, we don't need a second updater to confuse users.
I'm sorry if this wasn't the reaction you were expecting. Also, is there anything wrong with making your app open source? If you did, you could integrate some of your code into the official updater, and have part of your app in the officially supported PortableApps Menu. You may seriously want to consider open source
But, it's your choice. I wish you the best of luck with your updater.
I think it's pretty obvious it's not my intention to confuse anybody, but, as I said before, at the moment I first created PAU there wasn't any working / official / promoted updater (afaik even now the updater is not online), so I've created one for myself and later posted on my website. I didn't ask money for it, I didn't include ads in it, I didn't ask anybody to promote it, but the fact that to this day it seems to work almost flawlessly brought it to the attention of quite a few people. If PA will release an updater that will make this app completely useless, I guess I won't give this app so much attention. But, after all, this is my "baby" and as long as there are people out there relying on it to keep their apps up-to-date, I'll do my best to keep the app alive and improving, even if that will mean changing its name/icon.
Thank you!
I think we understand that no ill intention was there. The PortableApps.com Updater was in public testing and development for about a year before development of it as a standalone app was halted as it was incorporated into the platform. It's functional now and pulls the list of available apps from our app database directly. It works with the installers to do as much automatically as possible as well. In addition, it can update the PA.c Platform as well. It will be published with the next beta of the platform. It's just been on hold while additional platform functionality was being worked on.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
For what it's worth, your standalone app will always be a viable alternative for the few holdouts still using the old R34 MOD menu, which is like the official one but with categories and a few other features. Until the official menu gets categories, there will always be a need for R34 MOD, so you'll have a market with them.
Those of us who stick with the official menu will have no use for it at some point in the near future -- sorry about that.
I actually have R34 at home, but will personally have no use for an updater. I follow PortableApps.com on Facebook and Twitter, and have SMS updates for the Twitter account turned on. I get texted within 15 minutes of @PortableApps tweeting about a new release.
The updater is a good idea, only that it needs to be able to use a repository rather than only downloading complete packages, which by all accounts is how it will work in the short term. It's about automation not personal preferences.
R34 is a stop-gap measure for something that will hopefully make it to the menu at some point, but we must be careful about the order in which things are done.
Personally all I'd like to see next update, or beta, is to have the ability to use the Home and End keys, that would be awesome I feel since then you would have two distinct lists, albeit generated alpha-beta but that's fine by me and eliminates the need to be concerned about categories which if polled I believe would turn up a very low rating.
muswellR34 is a stop-gap measure for something that will hopefully make it to the menu at some point, but we must be careful about the order in which things are done.
Stop-gap implies short term, it's been almost 2 years since categories have been enjoyed by R34 users and requested/anticipated by official PA.c Menu/Platform users.
Still, the translations being done for 2.0 heavily implies it's coming soon. Actually in that topic John says 2.1 but that he wants the extra translations for the feature done early so it doesn't have to be done again later.
Translations are a consequence of development, and do not constitute development of an application parse.
Translations cannot be used to hold hostage developmental processes which are wholly unrelated, eg., categories or any other feature, new or improved.
The fact is translations are the last thing that are done and are only important in order to apply finishing touches and in reality don't even need to be part of a beta for example, so the idea that somehow a translation file impacts on the development of some other feature is plainly nonsense and is merely an attempt to propagate a self-interested motive.
As any keen and devoted developer would know, an order must be followed to ensure stability of release and this current portable menu (beta) is as rock solid as any other release that has gone before it, which is the reason why categories are likely to be "back burner" material.
Under normal circumstances, the translation is just a signpost of things to come.
However, we also have a promise that the feature is indeed coming soon:
John T. HallerCategories are scheduled for 2.1 which will be coming soon after 2.0, so I'd like to get the translations done now so we don't have to wait on them at all.
[source]
Of course "soon" is relative but there you have it.
There's no saying 2.1 will be the next version, so why all the fuss over what is arguably the least requested feature.
Sure I got heaps of applications and it's annoying having to scroll the entire list all the time just to get to the one you want, and yes hiding entries helps, as does scrolling with the mouse and page up/down, but naturally what needs to come next is home/end.
I don't know how much effort is needed to implement home/end but it would seriously help me at least to get to stuff I know is at the end of the list and is simply functionality that could be had.
Categories are obviously longer term and no amount of innuendo will bring that about any sooner, as the priorities are for the most part set, ie updater which people I believe really would like to see happen before any other "organizational" features.
You spoke in another thread ie., better organization of existing data, well if you could resize the menu in some way then you'd have that without any need to implement any more (new) features which is the reason why I am saying home/end should come first.
Well, home/end and keyboard selection should be a given. So I agree with that. But rather I say home/end and keyboard selection should be here now and categories should be next. Same thing, worded differently.
For me, Page Up and Page Down do the same as home/end (don't have that many apps on the flash) but that's beside the point.
Home and End are implemented in the next release, as is the Favorites (aka pin to top) which is much easier than hiding apps. Categories are partially complete and have another few hours of coding to do to solidify, but I don't think I can have them done and ready for a good test with 2.0 considering it's both automatic (PAF apps with built in categories translated into 39 languages) and manual (non-PAF apps and overriding PAF apps' built in categories). That's why I left the option open of doing them in a quick 2.1 release soon after. There is a specific target date we're shooting for for 2.0 final. And it is this month.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Sounds utterly brilliant, really looking forward to that.
Problem is the app is so stable, all you can really do is want for new features most of the time, but one thing I found and I hope can be addressed, is when the menu is open and visible, is there any way to "re-navigate" a shortcut, say in windows and it brings the focus forward, eg., when it is behind another program?
The best example would be mozilla, as their updater, pauser etc., works very well on later gen MS os's, I think that's why John is asking you to go open source since as much as people (like myself) can appreciate your effort, closed source means that even if the devs wanted to compare your work to the forthcoming updated application, it makes it an impossibility and relegates it to the rouge list.
First of all, thank you for your work, and more, thank you for sharing The updater is, to my opinion, "THE" missing feature of portableapps. So anything that could help implement it is welcome. John talks about it for a long time, maybe some help is needed !
One reason for the lack of feedback could be it's too recent. I, for example, don't remember making updates since Déc. 2. Maybe you should wait a little. So I just launched it to see how it works.
I was a little disappointed because it's too "difficult". I think an updater should automatically propose the possible updates and after that, let user choose which one he wants to update. PAU works differently, the user choose what operation he wants to do...
But, the (second) good point is that the updater automatically fetched the right release numbers and seems to retrieve release number from internet too. Good
Thank you again, I really think the a second "updater", with a different usage can only be useful.
But isn't John doing one already? (to be built in to the platfrom IIRC)

Hi,
whats the license for pau and could You post some more informations about it?
Some problems after a quick check
(Checked with audacity and 7-Zip an 'Check&Dl'):
There is no re-check, if an App is still updated once.
There is no check if an paf package still exist in the donwload path.
The Settings button is to small and is situated over the Games button.

Of course "soon" is relative but there you have it.
but so what?
That's 2.1.
Yes and remember home/end also means that when you are at the End, you can go back Home.
That would be an awesome feature to have implemented I feel but categories as mentioned by John do sound exciting as well.
Sounds really good, actually if all this can be had but all I want for Christmas is humble home/end.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
