Portability Characteristics?

Submitted by ajax on January 25, 2016 - 12:28pm

I just discovered this project but have always disliked the binding of software to a computer. This is especially true when involved in trying to troubleshoot and repair problems where you cannot rely on either the software you want to use being available or the software that is installed being reliable. What led me to Portableapps was the need to uninstall software that couldn't be uninstalled using the software installed on the computer (i.e., Windows in combination with vendor supplied uninstaller).

PA Platform updates

Submitted by werty8763 on January 24, 2016 - 10:14pm

Although I've been using the platform for quite a while, I haven't yet seen a new update for it ever since I started using it. I was just curious; if a new version for the platform is released, will I have to download the new version installer or will the platform automatically update itself?

Thanks in advance~ Smile

New feature for PortableApps Platform

Submitted by werty8763 on January 24, 2016 - 10:10pm

I was wondering if you ever plan to add this feature to the platform: the ability to lock a particular portable app with a password. This would be very useful for apps with sensitive data (a browser with passwords, for instance). OR, how about a master password for the whole platform? I personally think this would be a great new feature~ Biggrin

Problem Updating Apps

Submitted by tompet on January 23, 2016 - 2:20am

I have problems updating some apps. I have had it for a long time but now there are 4 apps that get error messages when I try to update them. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall them but do also get the same error. This has also been before and after the platform upgrade.

The Apps Are
Open Office to Apache Open Office
jPortable
Libre Office
Scribus

I get a message: “Download Error: Regret Error on file…”

I have the latest platform and other files are updating normally.

Is there a way I can solve this?

I have this weird problem with the portable apps launcher. On my windows 7 laptop the launcher appears as in all white and the only things that are visiable is the apps themselves, has anyone else seen this or know what is going on? I tried to reinstall it but it made no difference.

Migrating data from one browser to another

Submitted by werty8763 on January 22, 2016 - 6:15pm

Hello, I am currently using Iron portable, but there are some issues with it, so I want to switch over to chrome portable...
However, because Iron portable does not have the option to sync my data, if I switch over to chrome portable, I will lose all of my current data.... Sad
Is there any way for me to switch from iron to chrome and still have all my data?
(by data I mean bookmarks, settings, cookies, cache, passwords, extensions, etc.)

Submitted by trinsic on January 18, 2016 - 2:46am

is this page up to date https://portableapps.com/manuals/PortableApps.comLauncher/topics/java.html
?

I am trying to figure out how to make a java application show up on the launcher. Im going through the example part of the instructions. The instructions talk about a path App\AppInfo\Launcher\JestPortable.ini but I dont see a Launcher directory in: PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\AppInfo am I in the right directory?

Thanks to everyone for supporting this platform

I have been an avid user of single portable apps for about a year or two now. One of the things that is really important to me was being able to run my computer repair business without having to install apps on customers' computers. Latley I have been getting more and more involved in making sure I can run all the apps I need to troubleshoot problems in a more stream lined fashion. Whats funny is I was going though installing individual apps one at at time on my USB stick thinking, I wish portable apps had some kind of laucher that would make this simple.
