SWI Prolog - swipl-win.exe issues a false positive in Symantec

Submitted by michaelconnolly on January 6, 2016 - 10:14am

First time poster, long time fan of PortableApps. I created an account just to ask about this. Smile

I had some expalaining to do when Symantec issued a false positive for swipl-win.exe, SWI Prolog's portable package bundled into PortableApps.

It's all resolved at this point, but I wanted to make a post to share what happened and to see if anyone else has had their A/V issue a false positive for SWI Prolog or any other apps.

Replacement for DamnVid as a YT downloader

Submitted by bar1004 on January 1, 2016 - 7:06am

Could we find and implement replacement for DamnVid? As it can't download videos from YT (or I'm so stupid that I can't get it working) and developer stated that he doesn't plan to support program anymore (I e-mailed him about it). If I can suggest a replacement I would probably suggest Youtube-dlG (Youtube-dl with GUI), it's public domain, it's a bit heavy with 80MB, but it works.

I didn't wanted to post this topic in requested apps as I don't know what app should be requested, maybe someone will have a better suggestion.

Best backup/synchronisation program?

Submitted by shnbwmn on December 28, 2015 - 3:32am

After a recent hard drive failure, and my own failure to make regular daily backups, I'm looking for a good, reliable program which can one-way sync one hdd to another. I used to use SyncBackFree, and it served the purpose well, but it has one major problem for me. Let's say we have a hard drive with folders a, b, c, d and e on them (large folders, with many subdirectories), and I rename folder b to something else. SyncBackFree won't simply rename that folder; it will replace the entire thing. Obviously with large amounts of content that is a problem.

Power outage and text file got garbled

Submitted by trust on December 23, 2015 - 8:25am

I had a power outage and my kind of important text file got garbled.

All '[NUL]', when opening with Notepad 2 Portable. Is there any chance to recover it?

The bad news is, I accidentally have overwritten my backup from a few days back with the garbled one. Now I truly need to recover it. What (portable) app can you recommend for this job?

I tried all the different encodings in Notepad 2 (portable) to no avail. Maybe the proper solution - if there is any - is something completely different.
