Automatic Updates -- current guidance?

Submitted by honstein on March 19, 2010 - 1:39pm

It would be nice to have current guidance on what to do when an application displays an automatic update notification. I have seen a post from 2006, for example, and it would be nice to have newer information.

For example, Thunderbird recently notified me that there was a newer version, and since I didn't know at the time whether it was safe or not, I did not install it. But this is not a question about Thunderbird.

ZumoDrive + Portable Apps = Yum!

Submitted by Trixer on March 18, 2010 - 12:31pm

So I got a new netbook today, and I was being annoyed with having to transfer files back and forth all the time. Saving settings like bookmarks, mail, and all that jazz was becoming very annoying. Plus I just did not like the idea of having a pen drive perm attached to my netbook!

SO!!! I went and created me a free ZumoDrive account (http://www.zumodrive.com) which gives you 2 gigs of space completely for free.

It registers as a drive (like any other cloud drive) on your computer, so I installed portable apps platform to it, and I was amazed to see that it worked really well!

About the Opera web browser

Submitted by HND52087 on March 17, 2010 - 11:29am

Hello everybody. Now, if anybody reads this i want to ask you something, PortableApps.com now excepts {Freeware} software right, well if so it showed on the wikipedia that Opera’s license is Proprietary (Freeware) with open-source components. Now, does that mean that Opera is actually Freeware, well if thats true and PortableApps.com now supports Freeware software, i thought that Opera would make a good portable app and i would like to request it, but only if i’m not wasting anybody's time.

Is there a way to make portable apps like Pidign or other apps that have clickable support links default to the portable browser like Firefox?

Case in point was I went to launch Skype from Portable apps, forgot password clicked forgot password and it opened the computers default browser not the PA browser.

Same when I clicked on the Pidgin help defaulted to the computers browser.

Download selected apps idea/concept

Submitted by agdurrette on March 13, 2010 - 12:41pm

This is a concept idea that I thought of and I think it would be cool if could be implemented into the website.

It would be like a checkout system on a online store.

1) You would select the applications you want to download on the application list or on the apps page.

2) Once your done you will "checkout" and download the installer and the list of apps you want to download.

3) Then you run the installer it checks, you select where you want all of them to be installed to if the PA.c menu is not installed or selected it will ask if you want it or not.

[Fixed] Major McAfee Issues

It has come to our attention that McAfee's family of antivirus products is currently using a majorly broken set of antivirus definitions and finding false positive in several portable launchers and lots of other software.

Current affected products include:
- The PortableApps.com Platform
- Pidgin Portable
- GIMP Portable (I can't confirm this, VirusTotal says GIMPPortable.exe is fine by McAfee)
- OpenOffice.org Portable (I can't confirm this, VirusTotal says OpenOfficePortable.exe is fine by McAfee)
- and others
