Big Mistake on PortableApps SourceFORGE page!

Submitted by Panarchy on October 13, 2008 - 8:40pm

Hello

Some proxy was blocking direct download from the link on portableapps.com so I went via sort-of a 3rd party (SourceFORGE).

On the 'home-page' for PortableApps on SourceFORGE, in the blurb, I found this;

Download
GIMP Portable BG Window - GIMP Portable Background Window 2.1.3
Last Update: Oct 10 2008

Instead of

Download
PortableApps - 1.1
Last Update: May 20 2008

(or whatever it is meant to be)

What was up with the site yesterday?

Just yesterday around 9:30 this happened.

Then just now I got this alert...

http://img386.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pageloaderror1223937167vc0.png.

I'm 100% sure it's not my browser because I checked on different browsers and had about the same results.

I refreshed after a couple minutes and the site was back to normal.
Anybody know what's up?

Portable Apps menu organization

Submitted by smhasert on October 13, 2008 - 12:30pm

I apologize if this is already in discussion...and if it is, please direct me to the string.
First off, ya'll do a fantastic job of creating things that are perfect for the mobile/non-traditional 'office' worker.

Since I have been adding all kinds of valuable applications to my Portable Apps menu, the list is getting LONG. Is there a way (or an idea for development) to categorize. I've seen and downloaded the MiniLaunch bar, but it has the potential to get congested as well.

List of new and other existing portables on this site

Submitted by gris on October 12, 2008 - 5:15am

Besides the Home page that lists portable applications, it would be much more convenient to have another page that contains a list of all existing portables and each new application that is added to the list on a regular basis on PortableApps.com. Or I could be mistaken if the Home page list already contains all the applicactions available on this website.

WINE now supports gtk apps

Submitted by José Pedro Arvela on October 11, 2008 - 3:28pm

With the new WINE 1.1.6 out came a lot of bug fixes. One of them was bug 3915 that made gtk apps all black.

As this bug is fixed now, apps like Pidgin Portable and GIMP Portable, just to name a few, are now compatible with WINE.

Here is an image of Pidgin Portable running under WINE 1.1.6 on Ubuntu 8.04 (my machine):

Outlook Express Portable

Submitted by getco on October 11, 2008 - 10:21am

Is there any way to make OE portable? Its mail database is portable in a way as you can setup the location; the address book is also in a single wab file if I remember correctly. But the mail rules and the accounts are all in the registry... I'm pretty wet behind the ears with all this stuff, but I've read somewhere that you can actually intercept the program when it's writing to the registry and write it to a set location. So is there a way that I could make Outlook Express portable for my own personal use? I've been using it for a decade and I still think it's the easiest tool out there.
