Away for a few days

Just a note to all. I'm away for a few days due to an illness in the family. I will be posting infrequently (late night) and I was not able to do the 3 app releases I was hoping to do this week. I will get to them when I return.

UPDATE (Monday 2/27): I'll be returning on Wednesday and I'll post a note on status then. Thank you for the well-wishes.

Regards,
John

newb question.. browsing at work

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 22, 2006 - 9:09am

This is a noob question.

I am not allowed to browse certain websites at work obviously. Some being xanga and myspace.

CNRC began monitoring what sites we go on about 3 months ago. They have been cracking down on people playing yahoo games and such.

As long as I'm on the exchange server, are they still going to be able to monitor my web trail even if I use portable firefox? I know it leaves no personal data behind, but will they still be able to track which pages I go on?

PRE HTML element on this website

Submitted by Thox on February 22, 2006 - 5:49am

John, I'd recommend adding the <pre> element into the allowed HTML for the site and stop the bad use of stlyes you've got on <code>

<code> is for inline text, so I could put a short snippet of code in the middle of a line of text (e.g. echo "test";) and <pre> is for big blocks of preformatted text:

This text has lots of spaces in it,
but they won't show properly until John
allows <pre> elements on his website

I doubt it will be helpful anywhere outside this post, but the codefilter module is interesting, and it

UPX?

Submitted by gao0nline on February 21, 2006 - 10:45am

This may be a weird problem with my computer...

Whenever I try to open UPX.exe, a command screen pops up for ~.5 seconeds before closing again. If I try to keep it open by going to Properties and changing it, it opens and stays open. However, it doesn't work. Curious...

And I realize that this is a UPX problem, and not a portable apps problem, but I was hoping that someone could help me out. Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah, I'm running XP Service Pack 2.

Scite and NSIS

Submitted by Thox on February 21, 2006 - 6:10am

I can't seem to get nsis.properties to do much in Scite. All the other languages work fine except this one. It's not showing in my languages menu and doesn't seem to affect the display of *.nsi files at all.

Strangely, Sc1 seems to load it's internal copy of nsis.properties, but won't use the copy in my Scite folder. i.e. I can't edit how it's displaying NSIS files.

Any ideas?

PC First Aid Kit

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 20, 2006 - 11:34pm

This is a little project I've been working on for a while now. I've spent more time trying to get permission to redistribute certain programs than actually finding and testing suitable programs, unfortunately.

"PC First Aid Kit" is a collection of freeware capable of being run from USB, geared towards diagnostics and investigating/resolving PC problems ranging from malware/virus infections to emergency alternatives to common programs. This is the first release candidate. The final release of v1.0 will be when I get a website for it up and running, and finish tweaking the kit. You guys are the first to see this kit and I'd appreciate any feedback and suggestions. Smile Keep in mind that any programs you want to suggest must be freeware and able to run from USB. Open source is preferred but not critical.

Registry Question...

Submitted by Ashes for Tears on February 20, 2006 - 3:47pm

Okay, today I decided to do a search in my registry for traces of a program, and I found one in the "ARPCache" key; can this, technically, still be considered a registry key entry? In other words, not portable?
