Is it possible to get Ubuntu OS and PortableApps on the same USB Key?

Submitted by Inoxys on April 14, 2013 - 12:34pm

Hi,

I received my beautiful PortableApps USB key.
Is it possible to install Ubuntu OS and PortableApps on the same USB Key?

I wish I could run Ubuntu on any PC or run any Portable App on a Windows OS but with only one USB key. Do you think I can do that. With partitions?

Directory For USB Drives

Submitted by Tenzen on April 9, 2013 - 2:01am

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows a way to type a directory which points to the current USB drive, regardless of which actual Physical Drive Letter any given Computer assigns it

For example, I want to create a Shortcut to a file, but as soon as you move to another computer where the USB is assigned a different letter than the letter it was created on, the Shortcut no longer works

For instance, when I create a shortcut pointing to:

I:\My Portable Programs\Apps\Cool Program.exe

FF and TB typing freezes and other problems

Submitted by alma on April 8, 2013 - 7:01pm

Problem 1: used my FF 3 and TB 2 for years without any problems on a 1G SD memory card and they take only 1/4 of capacity with 7 accounts. But for about a year now, I've had problems while typing - it freezes or moves in leaps and bounds (as it does now). Both TB and FF also freeze before moving to the next window. Compacting folders, renewing inboxes and other advice did not help.

About 2 months ago I cloned in TB the same gmail pop account in Imap to check spam box without going to webmail, they're now both functioning OK in TB.

Portable Multi-Program General Spelling Dictionaries

Submitted by Tenzen on April 7, 2013 - 9:13pm

Does anyone know a way to get a portable program which doesnt have its own internal spelling dictionaries, but has support for external dictionaries, to use a stand-alone dictionary of some sort for its spell check function?

I'm trying to use the portable version of Smart Diary Suite Free edition and I'd like to find a way to add a dictionary to my USB drive that it could read..

maybe someone knows about another portableapps program that has its own dictionary that I could point to?

Automated services disabling app

Submitted by AMDfan on April 6, 2013 - 10:39am

I was wondering if there was an app out there that could be made portable that could automatically disable unnecessary services to speed up a computer.. iolo System Mechanic 9 and up comes with such a program, called Energy Booster, and it does a really nice job.. I would love to have something similar on my PortableApps list to use on peoples computers when I do tune-ups for them.

Donation: New Logitech K270 wireless keyboard?

Submitted by captivater on April 4, 2013 - 9:50pm

Hi. I've been enjoying your guys' platform for some time now. I try to donate to software companies whose creations I enjoy.

Money has been kind of tight for me in recent months. I've been wanting to donate some money to PA for a while. Through chance, I received a retail Logitech K270 via a warranty repair. It uses unifying receiver. Would any developer working on this project be in need?

If so please message me.

Thanks PA.

PortableApps launchers going online

Submitted by Aikiki on April 4, 2013 - 10:32am

I have Firefox Portable, standalone (without the whole PortableApps suite).
Firefox itself (Firefox.exe inside the App\Firefox folder) obviously needs an internet connection to function.

But recently I noticed that FirefoxPortable.exe attempted an outgoing connection as well, which was intercepted by my firewall.
I forgot to check the IP, but anyway..
This is not something I expect from an executable that is only supposed to start a program.

IIRC the same happened with Thunderbird Portable.
