How to Pin "PortableApps.comInstaller" to Start Menu

Submitted by ._. on April 26, 2012 - 7:06am

Im not sure if this has been discussed but i have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why the option to "Pin to Start Menu" is not available for "PortableApps.comInstaller".

Finally figured out the reason.. it contains the word "Installer".
which is prohibited by Microsoft.

To remove "Install" from the list of prohibited words:
- navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileAssociation
- make a backup of registry key
- double-click on "AddRemoveNames"
- delete "Install"
- save
- reboot for changes to take affect

Prevent AVG scan

Submitted by evan1123 on April 24, 2012 - 9:56pm

I use my portable apps drive at school quite often and the tech department has avg set to do a removable device scan. This is annoying for me because it has to scan all of the portable apps that I have installed. This process takes FOREVER, and I often just shut down the computer so I can get my flash drive back. Is there any way that I can tell AVG to exclude the portable apps directory or stop the scan without having access to the control panel?

Thanks in advance.

radiosure cheat

Submitted by cailsum on April 22, 2012 - 9:27pm

radiosure failed to install so i opened up a new folder, (name it Radiosure) under 'Explore' copy and install it there, upon install tick 'install as a portable' direct it to instal into the folder you just created. Thats it, go into the folder and create a shortcut from the 'Radiosure application' then simply cut/copy/paste the shortcut in the music folder. But if anybody can perfect this app plz notify me Smile

Portables on CD

Submitted by Green Tortoise on April 22, 2012 - 8:40pm

There is not much in the archives on using portables on CDs to prevent removable media from becoming infected. Is there a complete list of portables that function on CDs? To clarify, I do not mean live Linux CDs that need to be booted. I mean portable apps on CDs on public computers that I cannot change the boot sequence in the BIOS to enable them to boot to an USB or CD-ROM.

Are portables functional on write protected flashdrive or SD card?

Submitted by Green Tortoise on April 22, 2012 - 5:00pm

My removable media including external hard drives and MP3 players became infected with several malware including conflicker and AMVO. I have not been able to remove it. I purchase a write protected Kanguru flashdrive and a write protected SD card. Are portables functional when the write protection is on?

Are live bootable Linux ISO on flashdrives and SD cards functional when the write protection is on?

Thoughts on File Associations

I wanted to ask everybody a quick question about file associations. At first, I was planning on having each app only list associations for what it associates itself with locally or what can be associated within the app itself (if it has a 'register filetypes' function internally), as that seems to best duplicate the functionality you get from a local app.

PortableApps Start Utility -- INCLUDES FONTS!

Submitted by maxpowa on April 18, 2012 - 4:51pm

Make installing fonts easier! -- This utility copies fonts from the Documents\Fonts folder before PortableApps starts up. Just a quick batch file, it will make the Fonts folder if it doesn't exist. Just copies every time, so if you have many fonts you'd probably only want to run this once and a while.

NOT INTENDED TO BE SELF PROMOTIONAL - Its just a simple utility that I thought would be good for the general public.

PortableApps Eject Idea!

Submitted by fieldview on April 17, 2012 - 4:32pm

I had an idea that i think might be useful for others related to ejecting the drive.
I was wondering if it would be possible to make it that when ejecting the portableapps drive, that it prompts to end all task/processes related to the portableapps drive so there will be no problems regarding ejecting drives and then we could choose wether or not to end the processes.

TeamViewer Portable

If this has been discussed on the forum please link me and I will delete this post.

I have been trying TeamViewer PortableApps and I tell you, this thing is far from portable, its no different than the so called portable TeamViewer they offer on TeamViewer.com (Which sucks), it writes to AppData, registry and who knows where else!

Can someone clarify this please?
