OSX + Windows suite

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 20, 2006 - 6:05am

Hi everybody,
It's been nearly one year since I use portable apps.
I use them on windows and Linux(Wine) everyday.
But I miss quite a lot using them on OSX, so I've been very happy when I discovered

  • , but, a little bit disappointed.
Disappointed because I need to have the .exe(win) and the .app(osx) sharing the same profile folder.
And I really don't know how to do this.
    Can anyone help?

    Thanks everybody,

    Nicolas.

    Why the Registry?

    Submitted by dforion on February 19, 2006 - 7:56pm

Portable Apps remind me of how well I got along before MS forced the Windows Registry on us. And how much better I'm going to get along as I slowly migrate to Registry-free apps where possible.

So my question is: When would we ever want to use a standard app on a fixed drive if there is a Registry-free version available?

    NSIS code

I just started actually looking at the launcher code with SciTE, and it seems that the way you set it up, you only have to edit a few lines to change what program it launches. You still have to resolve paths and things, but the way it is set up is genius!

    FF update

    Submitted by samuel_uk on February 18, 2006 - 11:08am

My FF runs slow because each time I plug in my USB it downloads the update automatically, the problem is that even if I install it the install does not work and it just resets each time.

Is there a way round the update, like installing it on the USB itself? Or do I have to wait for an update from the PA guys?

    Account / Newsletter Signup Issues

    Just a heads-up to all...

My current shared webserver ended up blacklisted on a number of spam lists after another user installed some insecure scripts and a spammer abused them. So, things were a bit wonky for a couple weeks. I manually went through and re-sent the 100 or so subscribe and account requests that bounced back. If you haven't yet received it, just re-subscribe to the newsletter or request a new password for the account your signed up for and you should get it.

    Sorry for any inconvenience.

    "Living" portable?

Does anyone use their portable applications as their PRIMARY applications?

My secondary PC is getting on in years.
As an experiment I was considering replacing it with a low-end PC and running all my portable apps from my flash drive, if possible.

I don't want to boot from the drive, simply run my apps from it.

Does anyone here use their flash drive in such a manner, and if so, how goes it?

    Flash Drive Security

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 17, 2006 - 10:44am

Does anyone know of an open source tool to secure my flash drive and still use Portable Apps?

I've found a few that are "vault" type tools, but I can't run the apps from within them.

I'd really just like to password protect the drive or a folder on it.

    Thanks for helping a newbie.
