Perhaps a dumb Java Portable Launcher question, but...

Submitted by GrahamG on October 3, 2010 - 5:55am

Couldn't really find anywhere else for this, so put it up as a General Discussion.

To use OpenOffice Base OOo needs access to a java runtime.

The PA "Java Runtime" app takes care of downloading the necessary JREs. So long as the right default install folders are maintained, OpenOffice portable cleverly finds the necessary JREs. You just then need to confirm and away you go.

So, my question is simply, "what's the purpose of the Java Portable Launcher?"

Anybody know of a good portable SMB browser?

Submitted by htismaqe on October 1, 2010 - 11:04am

I'm having trouble finding a portable file manager/browser that allows me to access Windows shares via SMB but doesn't use the built-in Windows network neighborhood/drive mapping API's.

Both FreeCommander and CubicExplorer call the native Windows API's, which means any drive I map in them stays mapped on the machine after I close the app and/or shutdown PAM.

I've used muCommander and it works fine using SMB:// syntax but it requires Java to run and can be flaky.

Does anybody out there have any suggestions?

Custom Apps Suite

Hi can anyone point me towards any FAQ or guidance on creating a custom version of portable apps/Portable apps suite. I would like to create a version for teachers and students that could possibly be branded to reflect http://opensourceschools.org.uk

The only related thread I have found so far is https://portableapps.com/node/14604 which talks about mozilla redistribution rights.

Any advice/guidance gratefully received.

Will Stuxnet kill portable apps??

Submitted by hootowls on September 28, 2010 - 2:04pm

I have been reading with interest the continuing saga of the Stuxnet worm. It seems the new transmission method of choice is spreading Worms/Trojans using Flash drives. I was infected from an Apple with the Boot13 worm and I was frankly surprised at how easily it got me. I was also surprised how hard it was to remove.

Truecrypt traveler and Autostart on Windows 7 Help please?

Submitted by trainingwheels2010 on September 28, 2010 - 12:21pm

Yesterday I installed the a Truecrypt Traveler and Portable Apps
platform on m Sandisk Cruzer U3 Flash Drive. I have a few questions
about proper configuration as well as some comments.

1.) The autoloader for the Truecrypt Traveler password screen loads
on insert on our Windows XP machines at work, but does not load on
my Windows 7 machine at home. On Windows 7 I get an Options
menu which may mean that teh OS is somehow circumventing the
auto load feature on the Truecrypt Traveler. Do you know of a way of
getting Windows 7 to recognize the autoloader?

RSS Feed not automatically updating

Submitted by CarlosCastaneda on September 27, 2010 - 9:56am

Hi all,

I just search the forum and found some entries concerning RSS feed not updating automatically. But there was no solution so far. It's some days ago I started to add the portableapps.com RSS feed. If I reload the feed dynamic manually all works fine. But it's not downloded automatically. I've several other feeds that all work (checked it with wireshark).

I'm using the latest version of FF 3.6.10 on 2 different boxes with 2 different OS (XP and Win7) seeing the same behaviour.

Is there a solution?

Thanks.
