Checking for the Existance of an App...

Submitted by Fervel on February 1, 2008 - 10:24am

'lo everybody.

Oay, so here's the deal. My roommate is driving me nuts in that he keeps using my computer and indiscriminately pushing my stuff aside to work on his own stuff, despite the fact that he has a computer of his own.

I can't just password-protect my computer, because that's just too overtly aggressive; I don't wanna cross that line.

NotesHolder Lite (portable)

Submitted by alexanderk on February 1, 2008 - 6:02am

Hi, there is a new application to collection:

NotesHolder is an award-winning easy-to-use desktop sticky notes software.
Freeware version can be installed in a portable mode:
====
Portable mode. It was designed to be run directly from a USB flash drive requiring no installation to the client PC.
====

Ok... no problems.

How to lock it 100% ? I mean ALL of it...!

Submitted by hourcade on January 31, 2008 - 6:10pm

What is the best way to lock a USB drive from the onset, i.e. from the VERY moment you plug it in your USB port? A software like Folderlock requires to create a "Locker folder" in which you can put your files but the rest of the data (outside that folder) remains available.

Is there any other solution that would completely deny access to my drive when inserted until a password is entered?

I am not even looking for an encryption solution, but just for a "key" which will lock/unlock my USB drive.

Does PortableApps have PAD files for its apps?

Submitted by JerryD on January 30, 2008 - 10:31pm

Hey,

Hmmmm.... should this go here, or under Request App. Well here for now...

NirSoft (http://www.nirsoft.net/) - creator of roughly 85 utilities, all of which are portable! - maintains PAD files for each utility.

PAD files are "Portable Application Description" XML files which contain all the info about a portable application. They are especially useful when trying to keep applications up to date automatically.

The PAD file specification is maintained by the Association of Shareware Professionals, and info on it can be found here: http://www.asp-shareware.org/pad/

Download Button Ideas, Opinions Sought

I'm working through a few possibilities for providing more details in the Download buttons on the app pages so that it's more obvious how much space the apps require. I'm thinking about making the version, language and size information two lines instead of one. So, instead of:

DOWNLOAD NOW
4.57, Windows, Multilingual 1.1MB

It would be:

DOWNLOAD NOW
4.57 for Windows, Multilingual
(1.1MB / 2.1MB installed)

You can see a test of the new format on the 7-Zip Portable page here:

Portable apps that run on Macs?

Submitted by Snags40 on January 29, 2008 - 9:15am

I sometimes find I am in a place that has only Macintosh computers available for my use. Is there a way of creating a USB drive setup that has Mac portable versions of the programs I need and that keeps my files on that USB drive? Do such portable Mac versions even exist?

I can see me having both PC versions and Mac versions on the same USB flash drive. Thanks
