How can I be sure an app is not leaving stuff in my registry ?

Submitted by billyMass on July 8, 2009 - 1:41pm

hi

there's a lot of portable apps out there (not only in this site)...or so they claim to be.

one time after downloading and running a "portable" app from some other site (i think it was a .pdf reader) I closed the app, run regedit and searched for junk by the app's name.
I found some entries and I don't mean the "MRU" list.
I saw things in context menu...associated file types... that's NOT suppose to happen with a portable app !
that made me think: is there a way to make sure an app is not leaving stuff in my registry even though it calls itself "portable" ?

Billy Mays Caps Lock 1.0 - Turn your Caps Lock key into a Billy Mays key

I created a fun little utility that turns your Caps Lock key into a Billy Mays key. When you run it, a little Billy Mays icon appears in the system tray. Whenever you hit Caps Lock, you'll hear Billy Mays say one of his famous phrases ("Hi, Billy Mays here", "order right now and we'll double the value", etc). Just something quick and fun that I hope will make people smile. It's under 1MB and available for local install into Windows and in PortableApps.com Format.

Could this board be more open about competitors - and illegal warez whatever links?

I have read on various places questions about other portable sites (plagiarist) but every time, there is the info - the link has been removed. So much for the information.

I was browsing the web for a portable version of Unlocker (it is not open source software) and arrived there [link to illegal site removed by mod JTH]. I believe this is one of the plagiarist sites related on some other threads, since the logo really is a copy, etc.

Submitted by adude159753 on July 2, 2009 - 11:59pm

I was wondering if it was possible to make am applicaiton that would be able to run portablely like all the other apps from the suite (duh...this is portableapps.com, right?) and let us browse through all the alpha, beta, dev test, pre release canidates and also all of the released apps. Each different section is seperated into different sections like games, internet, utilities and such. Each app also having a discription so the user knows the functions of the apps he is looking it.

SourceForge.net, the site where we host our file downloads, has been having file hosting stability and download mirror issues since June 30, 2009. This is due to the recent SourceForge.net site upgrades and is affecting all 230,000 projects that SourceForge.net hosts.

They have some details of the ongoing issues here:

We will be updating this topic with more information as it becomes available. We apologize for any inconvenience.

UPDATE (2009-07-02 @ 5pm): It looks like it came back up. Downloads are working again.
