How to start PortableApps over the U3-launchpad?

Submitted by manwald on August 15, 2006 - 4:09pm

Hello,

I'm new to U3/PortableApps.com and I really like what you're doing! Espacially because I can use some of your apps or ideas for the BartPE-project on which I'm working also...

I've found nothing using the forum-search, so maybe one of you guys can tell me how I can start some PortableApps like ClamWin Portable over the U3-launchpad from my Kingston-U3-USB-stick?

I only found out how I can add U3P-files to the startup-panel - but how to add your selfextracing EXE-files?

Thanks a lot for any help and keep on your good work

Confused over Policy, Licenses and Source

Submitted by exocentrix on August 15, 2006 - 6:54am

I am writing a book about Open Source Politics, Economics and Ideology. There is a chapter on Portable Applications and I refer to the work of J. Haller.

I thought I had grasped the premise of this site, but am a little confused.

The best way to be brief about my point is to take the example of the PStart Launcher.

This is closed source, although free, in the sense of it being available for use without payment. There is another Launcher, called ASuite, that is Open Source (GPL).

Yet, PStart has been chosen to be promoted on this site instead of ASuite.

Meanwhile, the work evolved by Yadabyte, which is Open Source (GPL) is not promoted, because the source is not available.

A possible encryption solution

Submitted by lazyart on August 13, 2006 - 4:50pm

Hi all,

I'm new here... just got wind of all the portable possiblities and really liking it. I've placed a bunch of apps and such on a 40gig portable drive, one of which is Thunderbird Portable. Being concerned with security since I routinely leave passwords and account info in my inbox, I looked for encryption options. I really like Cryptainer and other options that mount as a drive but found that it required admin rights, which can obviously be an issue.

I'm offering up a free solution that can be modified to suit your own needs. I used PStart because of it's ability to launch programs on start and exit. In addtion I use EncryptOnClick because it has a command line interface. You can find it here: http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html

Notepad++ vs SciTE -- Which to make portable

Alright... they're both text editors based on the Scintilla editing component... so they're pretty similar in terms of the way they handle editing. SciTE is more generic by default (hence my config changes in the portable version) but it's available on Windows and Linux. Notepad++ is Windows-only, but it's much more polished and easier for the average user to configure. I'd been leaning towards doing a portable version of SciTE simply because it's cross-platform... but, I think Notepad++ will simply be a better fit for most people, so I'm thinking about just doing that instead.

U3 LaunchPad installation problems

Submitted by dan2k6 on August 12, 2006 - 12:42pm

Hi,

I recently purchased a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 1GB with U3 technology. I accidentally deleted the installation (.exe) file in the drive, then struggled to find where to download it again but found it at http://u3.sandisk.com/download/lp_installer.asp.

Now, when I try installation it, the following error message appears:

'Launchpad installation failed!

Reformatting of the smart drive failed. The drive might be unusable. You might be able to recover by rerunning this installer.'

I have tried rerunning the installer, but alas to no avail.

It has a 5 year warranty, so do you think it's worth contacting SanDisk support directly or trying to get it replaced? Have I damaged it completely? Should the .exe file ever be deleted?
