Hackers compromised CCleaner, is PortableApps vulnerable to this?

Submitted by ardouronerous on October 3, 2017 - 10:50pm

I'm a long-time user of PortableApps.com, I install and update using the PortableApps Platform.

We recently learned that hackers had slipped malware and therefore compromising Avast's CCleaner, which infected 2.27M users, read the story here: https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/18/avast-reckons-ccleaner-malware-infecte...

My question is, is PortableApps vulnerable to this? Is PortableApps doing enough to prevent this type of compromise?

Why Windows Firewall can not block portable apps?

Submitted by phuongtam on October 1, 2017 - 12:48pm

Hi,

Why I can not block portable apps with Windows default Firewall?

I try this command as administrator rights:

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="PORTABLE_WiseDiskCleaner" dir=out action=block program="E:\PortableApps\PortableApps\WiseDiskCleanerPortable\App\WiseDiskCleaner\WiseDiskCleaner.exe"

But WiseDiskCleaner still use my network. How can I block with Windows default firewall (or settings)?

Thanks in advance

There is currently an outage at SourceForge that is causing failed downloads via both the web and via the PortableApps.com Platform. SourceForge is aware of the issue and actively working to fix it. You can follow along on their Twitter feed for updates here: https://twitter.com/sfnet_ops

Symptoms: In the browser, you may see constant redirects when attempting to download or an error page. In the PortableApps.com Platform, you will likely see an error that the downloaded file is invalid.

We've been discussing the idea to make it an advanced option for users to select whether they want only the 32-bit version, only the 64-bit version or both (aka dual mode) for apps where we do automatic switching for a while now. Apps like Firefox and 7-Zip where we currently include both versions and have the launcher automatically switch between them. There are quite a few things to keep in mind while considering this:
