School suddenly has a problem with portable apps

Submitted by 13579 on May 12, 2009 - 3:32am

Greetings all-

I've been using portable apps for years without a problem. But suddenly today, the admins at my school seem to have a problem with it.

I'm going to have a meeting with the principal and the school tech person to discuss it tomorrow.

Any tips on what to say to them about this?

If they still won't let me use portable applications, I'm just going to stop using school computers. Internet Explorer is horrible, Microsoft word and such take forever to load, everything is much too bloated. I also have my computer set up with all open-source software.

I followed the link on the left to nominate PortableApps under the last category, "Most likely to change the way you do everything". It seemed the most appropriate one. Is that the one y'all chose as well? While the dev one was appropriate, I tend to view PortableApps.com as more a revolutionary force as opposed to usefulness. Because let's face it, the forks of the menu do more, and the apps themselves sometimes take a feature or two off to make it portable. They're not more useful than their installed counterparts, as for what they do.

Portable Apps vs. Cloud Computing

I am a friend to everything your portable apps are trying to accomplish.

But am bewildered by the apparent distinction between portable applications and cloud computing. Both seek to accomplish the same thing, although through different approaches.

What I don't understand, is why nobody seems to be interested in leveraging the power of each approach, and creating something even better?
