Flash Drive vs Hard Drive

Submitted by zachms on April 26, 2007 - 3:39pm

Well, it's gotten to the point where I am running out of space on my 2gig cruzer flash drive. I either want to buy an 8gig flash drive or one of the small portable hard drives that I've been seeing around.

What device is faster? At what point of RPM does a hard drive meet the speed of a flash drive?

Which will last longer? I assume that flash drives can get thrown around a little more, but when treated fairly gently, will a hard drive last longer than a flash drive?

Menu Doesn't Work

Submitted by MikeRivers on April 26, 2007 - 3:33pm

I'm a first time user. Checked out the program after reading about it in a PC magazine that I found in my hotel room.

Downloaded and installed the Standard_1.0 program, and when I click on StartPortableApps.exe I get an error message "PortableAppsMem.exe has generated errors . . . " and it quits, saying it generated an error log, which I can't find. There's an Autorun.inf file. Should the menu start automatically when I insert the USB drive? (it doesn't) Not having the menu isn't important, it's just that if it's there, I'd like it to work.

WinMEnc: a video convertor

I encountered this application and found it quite useful. Siince it's from Hong Kong, it is pretty popular in East Asia region. The description on the website says, "WinMEnc is the free GUI frontend of mencoder. It can convert any media format to the AVI file with the format of mpeg1/mpeg2/DivX/Xvid/H264, etc." Even though it does not have as many options as MediaCoder, I think it is more straight forward to use.

How to determin how long my USB Flash drive has left

Submitted by MrChris on April 26, 2007 - 12:59am

Since most if not all USB Flash drive fail after so many reads/writes. My question is how does one know when that limit is almost reached? I mean I always have good backs up my data but is there any way to really tell or do you just have to wait for USB Dooms Day? Maybe like a software app that can tell how many reads/writes have been made on a given flash device?

MrChris

Secure web access through firewalls with Portable Apps

Submitted by oneandoneis2 on April 25, 2007 - 11:00am

I hope this doesn't fall foul of the "self-promotion" rules - if it does, I apologise in advance.

I've written a little guide on how to use Portable Apps together for secure web access, regardless of where you're browsing from. The text is listed below, with a link at the very end to my web page, where some additional screenshots are displayed. Any feedback on the guide would be appreciated.

If you have to use Windows from various locations/computers, and are frustrated by firewalls or worried about who might be snooping on your browsing, this guide is for you.

Hiding .exe files in Portable Apps Menu

Submitted by gomezadams on April 25, 2007 - 9:59am

I have installed a few extra applications into the Menu structure as per the supplied instructions.

Some of these directories contain more than one .exe file, but I only want to see the main program file listed on the menu. Is there any way to "hide" a .exe fime from the Portable Apps Menu?

I tried renaming the unwanted files, rescanning and then naming them back, that worked until I ejected and re-inserted my stick.

Any suggestions gratefully received.
