Portable App Development

I am making ScummVM Portable (if this already exists, lets say I'm updating it)

The launcher executable is successfully made but when I run it, ScummVM wouldn't show up. If you want to test it, here are the locations of the files:

App
App\Theme
App\Games
App\Extra
App\ScummVM
All files from Install Directory goes to App\ScummVM

I've been working on "mobilizing" NetBeans 6.8. I have got it running off my USB thumb drive in a PAF directory structure and just completed an initial launcher.
There are a few things I have to add to it yet, like file backups/restores, since this is my first launcher.
I could use some input though on a few issues before I go much further.

Could someone explain to me the differences between:

C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\Application Data
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\Local Settings\Application Data

In my testing of portable applications I have found that many leave files/folders behind in:
...Tim\Local Settings\Application Data
which can be deleted without note

Some however leave files/folders behind in:
...\Tim\Application Data
which are backed up by Windows System Restore.

The implication is that Windows considers the files in:
...Tim\Application Data
more important\critical\worthy of backing up

I have a commercial application developed for U3, and planning to move to PortableApps platform. Registration on my software heavely depends on U3 unique serial number. Is there any other way used by PortableApps developers to register / license software on device based scheme?

The following is my experience in creating a PAF. I hope this to show any weaknesses in the process.

About the app
The app I am packaging is naively portable, but like most such apps it does not have proper separation of application and settings. It also has the capability of calling another program that has been packaged as a PAF, so I want to edit the default settings to point to the correct path.

I'm a newbie in NSIS developement and I've few problems with registry.

I need to convert the following string "$EXEDIR\App\Chainer\VstPlugins" to hex values for import in the registry like that :

WriteRegBin HKCU "Software\Xlutop\Chainer\1.0" "VstPaths" xxxxxxxx

where xxxxxxxx must be replaced by the hex value of "$EXEDIR\App\Chainer\VstPlugins".

I've found the registry function ${registry::StrToHex} but I have no idea how to use it.

Here's my code :

I have an app which should be started using
a batch file, rahter than an exe executable.
But have a problem with the line:

!define DEFAULTEXE "mybatch.cmd"

within/in my installer (nsi) script and it doesnt
work. How can I do such a task?

What all is planned for PortableApps in the future?

I know that there are more changes planned for the starter (suite).
Specifically I've seen the following features mentioned as planned for the suite:

• Some for of categories system
• portable fonts
• eXpresso or CAFE-like portable file associations

Further a universal launcher is in development, which is as far as I can tell intended to become the launcher used in all PortableApps.com releases.

I have made a portable version of FreeStudio, an awesome application which allows you to convert, burn, download of YouTube, etc.

For reasons of Copyright, I am not allowed to give you the actual files of this application but here's the guide on how to make it portable.

1. Download This : http://www.mediafire.com/?hktytdtmomy
That is the launcher files. Extract that where you will keep FreeStudio Portable.

2. Download FreeStudio : http://dvdvideosoft.com/download/FreeStudio.exe

Install this to C:\Program Files (recommended but not necessary)
