Portable App Development

I read through the "Creating A Portable App: A Guerilla Field Guide" post, but I still have some questions on how to go about making a portable app.

1. How do I clean install a program?
2. Is there anything I should know about making a program written in C++ portable?

My app require to write a key in:
HKLM\Software\Appname\Key

I write it with:
[RegistryKeys]
AppName=HKLM\Software\AppName

In a 32bit enviroment all is OK.
In a 64bit environment not work.
Because the launcher not store in:
HKLM\Software\Appname\
but only in
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Appname\

How can I solve?

What do I use in my launcher .ini file if I want to discard a registry setting (in HKCU) that has changed whilst the app is in use and therefore revert back to the original setting?

Are there any icon sets available for use while a project is in development?

I know, old topic. But relevant and times do change. Where is a good place to host a portable app for download when the app isn't open source. This one is freeware.

So what would the current thinking be on a Python Portable app. Should placement of the python language folder be in X:\PortableApps\PythonPortable? Or into the CommonFiles folder, ie. X:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\python?

2015-10-29: After answers from JTH and others, I have revamped this post for the benefit of others to follow.

I almost choked on my own spittle trying to navigate this site in the hopes of converting an already stand-alone app into a paf.exe. The first challenge is that the starting point isn't so clear. There are 4 use-cases here, and the "Guerilla Field Guide" covers one of them; using it for the others is like using a shotgun to kill a housefly. The four use-cases are:

Is there a true need for a Portable Utility to download and install the Java JDK? I know I wish there had been when I was looking to no avail. Did find a Powershell script that did the trick with a little tweaking.

My question is; would I be wasting my time by creating a PortableApp Utility for distribution to install the Java JDK in the CommonFiles folder? The JDK would not be included in the distribution. The Utility would download the Windows installer then strip out the JDK and install it.

For apps that allow multiple instances, the Launcher has two behaviors that don't seem right.
