A NEWER VERSION HAS BEEN RELEASED:
http://portableapps.com/node/16839

I've posted a development test release of Spicebird for testers. It's basically an email, rss, PIM and IM application suite based on Thunderbird, Sunbird and xmpp4moz. It's a little early in its development cycle (pre 1.0 release) but there's been some interest in it, so I got permission to do a version.

Please share opinions and thoughts on this new app.

Thanks,
John

Sweet

Thanks for being quick on this. Eager to try it out.

Edit: Alright, seems to be working just fine. Thanks for packaging this.

which version of thunderbird

which version of thunderbird does this use?

Please search before posting. ~Thanks

It's Not

It's not Thunderbird. It's 'based on' Thunderbird. I think it's the 3.x branch of it.

Sorta off-topic...

This is sorta off in left field and off topic, but a few of us mentioned Feature Creep, Featuritis, Scope Creep, etc. over in another thread.

You can see a very good example of this (or people/users trying cause this issue) on the Spicebird "Roadmap" page. Read the developers goals and then scroll down to see everyone pile on with the kitchen sink.

When I read all those comments I thought back to our little fireside Feature Creep chat. Eye-wink

(I wish I knew the Drupal trick to link to specific comments to make my links better...anyone willing to give me the secret decoder ring?)

And

For comments, just add #comment-[comment number] to the end of a page link (e.g. 10000?page=1#comment-999999).

schemes

?page=1 is page two
?page=2 is page three

I just love intuitive naming schemes.

PHP

PHP starts its indexes at 0, like pretty much everything (MySQL too). So yeah, take that.

So far no issues to report that are related to the portable parts, that is. (I have a question in on SF.net about an issue with "Master Password".)

Keep up the good work, y'all. Smiling

Bug: Folder Left in Application Data

Just a small thing I caught while toying with this. As soon as it's run, Spicebird Portable creates Spicebird\Crash Reports\* under Application Data. They plan to have to next release out around well, last month, so hopefully soon. Thought I'd mention that before it's updated. Smiling

Definitely

I'm definitely interested in this. I'd love to see where it goes. Like you said John, it's still a little early in the dev cycle...but I think this would be awesome. I love T-bird and Pidgin, but if I could go to one app, I would consider it.

Now all i need is an RSS for either Spicebird or this thread...

Haha!! YAY for FF3. It

Haha!! YAY for FF3. It extracted the RSS from Spicebird for me Smiling

Spicebird 0.7 Due Out Tomorrow

I know you're busy with a lot of stuff, and I'm sure you've signed up to be notified of the next release, but I just wanted to let you know that Spicebird 0.7 is due out tomorrow. The last comment I saw looked like Spicebird was planned to be out at the end of July, but I don't know if that was from a developer. Anywho, I've been keeping a close eye on this project, and tried a nightly around a month ago. This will be a very great release, as they've updated to use Pidgin's libpurple from their 2.5 release (msn protocol updated, etc). The new version support iGoogle applets (brilliant, IMHO), and I believe their will be an addon repository coming as well. So, look forward to that, I know I will!

Edit: When you do get a chance to update, don't forget this! Smiling

Edit 2: Also, seeing as 1.0 is mainly commercially-targeted features (CMS integration, MS Exchange connector), I think going live with 0.7 if it's stable would be great.
