This is a funky issue I have never run across before...
While i have used other backup utilities before, I have never used toucan. Toucan seems pretty straight forward.
I have googled and searched the PA forums and have not found a similar issue. I just cannot figure it out!
Using Toucan I backed up files from a computer (~30 gb) to an external tape drive (haha... yes, 120gb, a tape drive). I made sure the file/folder sizes matched and then reformatted the computer. The files are mostly standard documents, pictures, and videos. that have been collected over life.
When I initially plugged the usb tape drive into the machine (i tried on multiple), all of the folders were empty! I then freaked out a little and started investigating. I then found the folder properties dialog was showing the number of files and sizes.
In windows I made to sure "show all hidden files and folders" ... and the files did not show.
any and all help is greatly appreciated.
I then unchecked "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" and all of the files then appears in the folders... however, they are "whited out" / lighter / more transparent... and there is a black icon in the lower left of the file.
This doesn't have anything to do with a virus... this seems like a weird file permissions / owner issue I simply cannot figure out how to resolve.
Does anyone have any ideas on how i can make these files... "normal" (for lack of a better and more technically correct term?)

honestly have no idea! Were you using the backup mode? If so you could try extracting the files with 7-Zip Portable and see if that works. If not I expect the attributes can be changed with a batch script, just ask if you would like me to write one.
I too encountered the same issue without a solution or understanding. Used Toucan_2.0.3 in the Sync mode, copy and update options. Some files were made hidden, read only, and apparently "operating system". Again, I found them by changing the MS Explorer View Options. Tried manually changing the attributes but failed.

Installed your pre-release and obtained the same results as with the other version, ie didn't fix the issue.
I used Sync, update mode, ignore read-only. New files copied but,again, were made read-only and hidden. Original files were not read-only or hidden. Could only view them when I changed MS Explorer options. I applied this to only one directory - thank heavens.

Followup: Don't know if this makes sense, but my original installs of .03 and .04 where directly "over" previous installs, ie I didn't delete previous versions.
Since, I deleted the previous version then installed the .04 and saw different results. Meaning a file that was being converted copied to the Sync directory wo coverting. Hope this makes sense to you cause I'm confused and don't want to move forward yet.
Forget my earlier followup wherein I did a clean install of .04 and saw success or correct Sync, Copy in one directory.
Just attempted a Sync, Update and Copy w another directory and the results were disappointing to say the least. Again, files were transfered but some had their attributes changed and could not be viewed wo changing MS Explorer. Punt!
you try the latest pre-release? I think I have it fixed.
Clean installed _2.0.4_PRERELEASE2, executed Sync, Update & Copy, and "all" files appear to have transfered wo changing attributes, etc. I did this to 6 directories that were previously used in the testing.
Attempting to confirm results, I also switched MS Explorer views and, as expected, the total file difference w and wo the switch increased only by one (thumbs view or some other normal protected file). Hence, you may have fixed the issue. Thanks MJH

It might be a filesystem or operation system issue, since sync worked fine on this same clean install of 2.0.4. Pre-release 3 with my Vista-PC. Hope you find a solution to this issue! Good luck!
confirmed, not sure what has happened as the source for that code didnt change after the pre-release, I shall get it fixed ASAP.

It seems that "Retain Attributes" -switch makes a difference here. When Syncing with settings: "Mirror (Update), Retain Attributes, Ignore read-only, Ignore daylight savings" files seem to be copied to usb-stick with 'normal' attributes - ie. so that they are visible without setting 'system files' visible from explorer properties.
have just done even more testing, it is definitely the Ignore Read-Only switch that is broken, if you use that option on its own then the files will be hidden. If you then add the Retain Attributes switch they are normal. I suspect this might be related to this bug as well.
you test to see if this is fixed in the latest Pre-Release please?
And here are the results of a quick test with my Vista-pc:
