Portable apps on Notebook running Windows CE 5.0

Submitted by JoChallacombe on January 30, 2010 - 11:12am

Hi!

I've got a mini notebook on its way to me and it runs Windoes CE 5.0. Apparently a lot of notebooks are running this, although I've never heard of it!

Will the portable apps on this site work on Win CE? It comes with really basic apps like Wordpad, and I would like to be able to run some decent programs on it but are they compatible?

Also, I've heard that Win CE comes with an old version on IE and doesn't have any flash support, is there a flash player with the Firefox portable app?

Installed portable apps suite on hard drive, it seems to be taking up a huge amount of space

Submitted by john2010 on January 29, 2010 - 2:10pm

Hi everyone,

I installed the large 124 MB portable apps suite on my hard drive because I just wanted to check it out. I meant to install it to a folder on my desktop but I installed it directly to my desktop by mistake. It seems to have installed an icon in my lower task-bar.

What shocked me is that the installation seems to have taken up a huge amount of hard drive space, like perhaps 80 GB or so. I have a 289 GB hard drive and now I have about 183 GB of free space. Before the installation, I think I had much more free space. I am using Windows XP media Center SP2.

Move apps to anywhere

Submitted by fsmaus on January 28, 2010 - 2:22am

Hi community,

I'd like to post an "easy question" to everyone with little experience with portable apps. However, I find it to be very relevant, and this information I cannot find to be explicitly stated here:

Regarding flexibility, can I move my portable apps folder (via explorer)? In what problems do I run if I simply move my apps from one folder to another on my HDD or from my HDD to a USB stick?

Thanks for clarifying!

Menu skin and functions

I haven't had the need to use my thumb drive for quite awhile until recently. Now that I have a need for it I decided to break it out and update the software on it. That's where my problem starts.

First, I had this absolutely awesome theme for it that got wiped when I upgraded to the beta. It was a dark gray theme, jagged on the edges and had the Cheshire cat from the game Alice. Not the cartoon cat. This one is kinda goth with tattoos and earings and what not. Now that the theme is gone I cannot find it anywhere online and don't remember where I got it in the first place.

Will PortableApps run on a dumb terminal? [Platforms?]

Submitted by itzthor on January 27, 2010 - 9:20am

The office my wife works at uses dumb terminals. At least that's what she says. I know that a majority of the info on the individual pc's comes from the server but I'm not sure if there is anything actually installed on the client machines.

With that in mind, will Portable Apps run on a Windows based dumb terminal? Or will there have to be an OS installed on the pc itself?

*EDIT* Portable Apps would be running off of a thumb drive.

Newbi with question

Submitted by grumpyguard on January 26, 2010 - 1:52pm

I want to make an EA game portable. The game in question is Battlefield 2. I purchased the game and down loaded the most current two patches. One patch allows the game to be played with out the CD. How would I install the game and then the patches? I have made one successful portable app., but that was straight forward as I only needed to install the game.

I would like to be able to use this game at work. I work nights and have down time.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Two instances of PortableApps on one machine

Submitted by avmad on January 26, 2010 - 8:37am

Hi all,

I am hosting a vmware Win XP virtual machine on my Win XP laptop. The VM is mounting the host "My Documents" folder.

In the host My Documents folder I have a "My PortableApps" folder which is the normal root of the PortableApps folders.

I want to use the PortableApps menu system and some of the apps contained within it from my VM. However, if I try to run say FireFox Portable in my VM while it is already running in my host machine then I get an error (which is understandable).
