Running PortableApps within U3?

Submitted by RJ12 on January 9, 2010 - 10:01pm

Hi guys, first post here so if I have posted this in the wrong forums I am greatly sorry. I was reading a blog post about U3 v. PApps.com and in the comments someone said just install portable apps within U3. Is this possible, if so how do I do it? I had to reinstall U3 because I tried using PackageFactory (Wouldn't delete app). Please do not ask why I am using U3.

2 newb questions about executables and portability drawbacks

Submitted by staticfuror on January 8, 2010 - 3:52pm

Just discovered this site and found myself wondering what the drawbacks are for portable applications? Google wasn't much help on this. Not being a professional programmer, I don't understand why it isn't EASIER to create a portable application as opposed to using Windows's labyrinthine User, AppData, and so on directories.

Is this a cause for concern?

I really don't know if this is due to my ignorance but I came across this
link: [link removed] while looking for plugins for GIMPPortable
this site doesn't seem legit, it doesn't have any of the icons that portableapps.com has.

[Don't post links to sites that seem suspicious or anything like that; in this case, it's a known mirror site - and a great nuisance they are - mod Chris]

Keeping Portable Apps Up to Date

Submitted by MWayneB on January 6, 2010 - 4:41pm

First and formost I would like to thank all the talented people that have made this wonderful site and application available for someone like myself.

I would like to know what is the best way to ensure that I have the most current versions of the Portable Apps applications?

Is there a set way in which these applications should be updated to the latest versions.

Thanking any and all for your technical support.

Pinning PortableApps on System 7 or finding a better workaround

Submitted by mgagnonlv on January 6, 2010 - 11:03am

Hello,

Is there a way to pin a portable application on the task bar (or in the menu)? I am not interested in pinning and using a second copy of Firefox as discussed in a previous discussion, but I would love to put a shortcut of "StartPortableApps.exe" in the taskbar.

Alternately, I am looking at a less cumbersome way of starting PortableApps. Right now, the following happens when I insert the USB key
– System churns for a few seconds and finally shows the "Auto Exec" window

Iomega v. Clone with PortableApps

Submitted by J Neutron on January 6, 2010 - 7:07am

Has anybody seen the write-ups for the Iomega v. Clone drive?

From what I can see, it is a portable hard drive that is pre-loaded with PortableApps.com applications and pre-configured to allow you to transport all of your stuff from a work computer to a home computer or wherever else, too. They even mention that it is good for backup since you always have redundant copies of your stuff, should one of the machines fail.

License Questions

Submitted by agdurrette on January 5, 2010 - 3:38pm

I have a couple of questions related to licenses.

1) What license should I use for my launchers?

2) If you make a launcher can I say I made Portable SomeApp or do I have to say I made a Launcher for SomeApp?

3) Can I create a project in SourceForge and host all programs, launchers and scripts Or do I have to make a project for each?

wearing level

Every cell in your usb stick can be overwrited a limited time, luckely we have a lot of cells and it can be overwrited a lot.
I use my usb stick verry much and love portable apps but one thing pulled my attention: running portable firefox,... keeps it flashing over and over.
its because it downloads its webpages in the cache but isn't it a better programming habit to store everyting in the temporary folder and at the end when closing perform a check and write al changed data to the memorystick.
I think its better but does this fit in the portable idea?
are there anny problems with this?

Submitted by Unregistriert on January 5, 2010 - 1:40pm

HI,

I use "PortableApps" for about a Year, and I must say, it is great. But today a study colleague shows me an other site:
**************** Edit: better to delete

What is the difference? The design looks similar, but the one site use a red color with a white arrow on a grey background, an the other site is designed in blue, withe the white arrow on a golden background.

I don´t understand why Sad
