PortableApps In The Cloud(Dropbox)

I have discovered a new medium for carrying my portableapps with me accross all my computers without having to remember my thumbdrive, dropbox. So long that I have an internet connection I can store my apps on a real time cloud storage service this means that I don't have to upload everything again every time I put it in the folder. I have used this successfully and I am inviting you all to do the same.

You can find it here here

I hope you like this Idea If you have any questions please let me know.

Index file contents - like windows desktop search or google desktop search?

Submitted by adoucette on January 16, 2010 - 8:31pm

Is there a portable app available that can index inside the files on my thumb drive?

For example, I have a thumb drive that has all of my school notes as well as textbooks on it. They're in doc, pdf, html, and chm format. I'd like to be able to do instant searches for keywords like I can with the windows desktop search.
Is there a (free) portable app that can do this?
Thanks,
Ari

Turning Portable Apps On/Off

Hi everyone.

I'm looking for specific functionality that I'd be interested if any of you knows is possible.

Basically I want to do the following:

- take snapshot
- install bunch of apps
- take snapshot
- compare snapshot and make package

Then have the ability to install package / deinstall package at will.

Basically I want to portable-ize my after effects plugins, but without portable-izing after effects.

Custom Icons

I'm curious, regardless of what menu/platform you use to launch your portable apps, do you use custom icons to represent things like application categories? If so, what (free) icon sets do you use?

Facebook widget looks unprofessional

Submitted by Bruce Pascoe on January 11, 2010 - 9:00am

I noticed we've added a Facebook widget to the bottom of forum pages. The problem is that it's a collection of random avatars and therefore looks very unprofessional; I would rather see a Facebook button or something than this thing.

Frankly I don't see the point of the widget anyway. If I were into social networking I'd click the Facebook link and go there to see who's a fan (I think that's the Facebook terminology) or not, but I'm not, so I don't particularly like having it shoved down my throat.

Error launching portable software on windows 7

Submitted by 2fan on January 11, 2010 - 5:45am

Hello all, I am new to this so I am sorry if this sounds stupid
I have been using portable applications for a while now and recently upgraded to windows 7 but every time I try to launch an application it gives an error message

'Main program has stopped working,
windows is searching for a solution'
and soon after the application shuts down, some applications have a little pop app on the side saying something about thinapp suit packer

all these software ran well in xp, but I can't even run firefox or skype any more..

Freeware on development test table?

I'm wanting to clarify if freeware online installers are ok to be included on the development test release table. This came up in a recent discussion and I couldn't find anything on the forums to indicate as such.

John, can you clarify this and if there isn't a hard and fast rule as yet would anyone like to weigh in with what they think on the matter.

Thanks Smile
