usb flash drive access speeds

Submitted by rustyconc on November 22, 2007 - 3:46pm

Anyone have any insight into why Win2k access speeds are so much faster than WinXP Pro? I've noticed this on 3 different drives running ThunderbirdPortable. Is there any way to tweak XP to act like Win2k? There are noticable delays (e.g., click on a message, pause, preview comes up in the pane, etc.) when using TP on WinXP that are not noticable at all on Win2k. Defragmenting helps, but doesn't fully do the trick. Obviously, a WinXP 'problem' not PortableApps, but I thought folks here might have a trick or two to get around it.

Thanks, Russell

Edit: I don't have an idea why you guys decided it was an awesome idea to revive this, It's a 3 year old forum post.

Homepage: http://www.rocketdock.com/
Liscense: Freeware

How to make portable:

1. Download RocketDock From The Link Below: http://files.punklabs.com/RocketDock/RocketDock-v1.3.5.exe
2. Install to the system, or your flash drive (Universal Extractor will not work)
3. If you installed to the system, copy the RocketDock directory to the PortableApps directory on your flash drive.
4. Run rocketdock.exe

I'm trying to run my flash drive from a Ubuntu live CD (As in using the live CD and seeing if I can use PAM there). It said that it can't run "file:///media/usbstick/startportableapps.exe" Anyone got an idea?
(Yes, I searched, unsuccessfully)

Suggested Hardware Requirements for Portable Apps?

Most software titles have Suggested and/or Minimum Hardware Requirements.

I was wondering if we should do the same for portable apps. Kinda like a suggested Read/Write speed the flash drive that it would be running on. It would probably take awhile to finish, but I think it would be worth it.
John's busy enough as it is, but if he approves of this idea, maybe we could round up some volunteers to test-run the apps.

What do you think?

Extending the launcher

The PAM launchers are useful to start a certain app from your USB stick and I was thinking to add a small bit from the PAM installers, namely the detection of the Portable Apps USB stick. Remember how the installer of Portable Apps always finds the path to the portable apps?

This way the launcher could be copied to the desktop and be used as a 'shortcut' for the application on the USB drive. I think this might be useful in some occasions to use the launcher as an shortcut as well.

Locked folders on mac

Submitted by camd54321 on November 18, 2007 - 9:30pm

I do know that portable apps does not run on a mac!
That being said when I did plug my thumb drive in my mac for copying some files into the music folder under documents (I keep music on my mac) I was upset when I could not copy it in. The folder for documents and all the folders within were locked.

Normally you can unlock a folder or file fairly simply by un-checking a checkbox, this would not work for this. These folders I found were locked in a way that only that they are only system immutable. So to get rid of it I had to boot up into single user mode and fix it using command line.
