Portable apps and documents on the same USB drive?

Submitted by pjoyce on July 25, 2007 - 4:56am

New to the forum but have been a long-time reader. I have recently looked at the "What's on your portable#2?" thread and noticed a number of users who have a large number of portable apps on relatively small drives.

I was wondering, do most of you keep portable apps on a USB drive and documents? Or put all your apps on one drive and keep another one free for documents/data?

I'm asking because I have quite a few apps on my 1GB USB drive (600MB free) but was considering putting the apps on a 512MB USB drive I have and keeping the 1GB free for documents/data.

Working Directory Woes

Submitted by jdecarlo on July 24, 2007 - 11:19pm

Is there an option, configuration file I can add, or something coming in a future release that will allow me to set a working directory for an application that wasn't installed using a paf.exe installer?

I have an application or two that run perfectly from portable devices, but I can't run them through PortableAppsMenu because it apparently runs the applications using the PortableAppsMenu as the working directory.

I am not really interested, nor do I have the time, to create an installer. I would just like to be able to assign a working directory to a menu item.

Can't run Menu App

Submitted by Zeedok on July 23, 2007 - 11:01pm

I have had problems using my portable apps menu on a work network. It works normally at home and on other work networks.

The menu won't open, and says it is generating an error log. The platform is Windows 2000, and I previously used the same apps on this network without problems.

I suspect the network admin have changed a security setting or something ... and I'm asking for their help, but does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Unpackage

Is there a way to take a launcher or installer .exe and just take the files out of it. It would be useful just to see what files you would be putting on your computer and where. Also is there or can a portable version be made?

No tray version of PAM?

Submitted by phate on July 23, 2007 - 11:54am

I work in an enviroment where I can use the portable apps but the problem is I can only launch one instance of any one program. The problem actually is that they have locked down the systray so that it only shows the time and I can't change it and I guess PAM likes to minimize to the tray which doesn't show its icon and the only way to run it again is to completely log out and relog in.

My basic question is this: is there away to prevent PAM from minimizing to the tray and just staying open?
