Which proxy can bypass my ISP firewall???

Submitted by topdog9926 on April 27, 2007 - 7:25pm

Hello,

My ISP has a firewall that blocks access to ALL secure sites (https.) I think that's port 443. Before now I have used http-tunnel.com to get around this, but they are having issues. The only other app that has come close to being an alternative is your-freedom.net but their service is crappy.

I have also tried web based proxies but they don't do the job well enough.

Can anyone here pls recommend a proxy software that can bypass my ISP firewall. Any help appreciated

Questions about PortableApps Suite

Submitted by chobo2 on April 27, 2007 - 5:21pm

Hey

I have a couple questions about the PortableApps Suite(the program that puts everything in a nice menu)

Right now I am using the u3 menu(I like it alot) but that technology seems not to be taking off and not many programs exist for it(that are free) so I am just looking at this for an alternative.

Questions:

1. Does this menu launch automatically when usb key is plugged in?
2. Does this have the ability to have password protection?

Way of tracking which version of what is installed ?

Submitted by shookmon on April 27, 2007 - 4:50pm

Does anybody have slick way of tracking automatically the versions of all their portable apps?

I'm starting to be concerned that with multiple USB keys (my wife and I for now) that I'm not going to easily know what needs to be updated. I'm planning that I'll get her key once a month-ish and run all the updates. Other than a document with all the info, or opening each one individually, does anyone have a better way of keeping the apps updated?

Flash Drive vs Hard Drive

Submitted by zachms on April 26, 2007 - 3:39pm

Well, it's gotten to the point where I am running out of space on my 2gig cruzer flash drive. I either want to buy an 8gig flash drive or one of the small portable hard drives that I've been seeing around.

What device is faster? At what point of RPM does a hard drive meet the speed of a flash drive?

Which will last longer? I assume that flash drives can get thrown around a little more, but when treated fairly gently, will a hard drive last longer than a flash drive?

Menu Doesn't Work

Submitted by MikeRivers on April 26, 2007 - 3:33pm

I'm a first time user. Checked out the program after reading about it in a PC magazine that I found in my hotel room.

Downloaded and installed the Standard_1.0 program, and when I click on StartPortableApps.exe I get an error message "PortableAppsMem.exe has generated errors . . . " and it quits, saying it generated an error log, which I can't find. There's an Autorun.inf file. Should the menu start automatically when I insert the USB drive? (it doesn't) Not having the menu isn't important, it's just that if it's there, I'd like it to work.

WinMEnc: a video convertor

I encountered this application and found it quite useful. Siince it's from Hong Kong, it is pretty popular in East Asia region. The description on the website says, "WinMEnc is the free GUI frontend of mencoder. It can convert any media format to the AVI file with the format of mpeg1/mpeg2/DivX/Xvid/H264, etc." Even though it does not have as many options as MediaCoder, I think it is more straight forward to use.
