Disable program check on startup

Submitted by neddyfreddy on April 20, 2007 - 11:02am

When a portableapp starts up it checks to see if there is already a non-portable version of the same software running. Is there a way to disable this? I have found that if I start up the portable version, then the non-portable version there is no issue.

I understand that I can rename the .exe of the non-portable version and work around this, but this is not a suitable solution.

What about portable java?

Submitted by onthego on April 20, 2007 - 7:09am

I did read in the forum about portable java. Someone said John T. Haller has made a portable version of java. Is this the truth or is this a myth?

Java *shall* be gpl`ed at *some day*. I don`t get why them don`t just do it and why them need to announce it. However, this probably won`t happen soon.

If so... Without running in legal issues... Could you post instructions to make java portable? I guess not just me could need a portable version for java. Doesn`t matter if first just for firefox or for the hole comp.

USB Lock/Encryption

Submitted by King Tut on April 18, 2007 - 7:42pm

What would you guys recommend for a USB Lock/encryption software? I was going to use TrueCrypt until I heard that I need admin rights to decrypt.... out of anything I'd prefer a TrueCrypt that doesn't require admin rights.
But all I need is something so that no one can access my USB drive. Free, please, and able to work on a computer without any admin or whatever rights.

hey john, you might want to take a look at this (copyright infringement and theft most likely)

i just saw this over on mikicun and thought you might want to look into it, from the way its worded he seems to be taking credit for your work or (quite possibly) trying to trick someone into getting a trojan using a illegal copy of P.A.M.

[EDIT] whoop's, sorry bout that... [/EDIT]

just thought you ought to know.

Miranda or GAIM?

Submitted by King Tut on April 16, 2007 - 10:15pm

I want to know what one is recommended. I will be accessing my USB drive mainly from XP computers, and a few W2K every now and then.. (rarely). I have never used Linux and only ever had one Mac, so that is kid of out of the picture. My USB flash drive is 2GB.
