Good Light Weight PDF Reader

Submitted by learn2laugh on February 21, 2007 - 10:58am

Hi all, this is my first post so bear with me. I have been looking for an alternative to Foxit Reader because of its license. I found a program that is very young, but seems to fit the bill. It is very light weight and very fast. I am in no way affiliated with the project, but just a happy user. It is SumatraPDF

Testing for Portability Bread Crumbs

Submitted by toj on February 21, 2007 - 7:50am

Does portability generally also imply that the application doesn't leave any droppings of any sort on the host computer? I would think so, but maybe not.

Are there any reliable recommended programs to help test for this aspect of portability? I want to make sure I don't salt a guest host (e.g., a friend's computer) with any residues from portable apps I've used.

1.0 to 1.0.1 Patch

Submitted by Patrick Patience on February 20, 2007 - 8:01pm

I had the problem of my PortableApps Suite not opening up on a macvhine with Windows 2000 loaded onto it, so I figured I'd download the Patch to fix it. After downloading, when i went to install it, it got to about 5% and the install manager asked weather I wanter to overwrite the liscence file with the one provided on the Patch, another accounter happens at 10%, weather I click auto-rename, overwrite, do not overwrite, etc, the installed shows and error and closes at 10%.

Could anyone help me out, I'm not sure what exactly the problem is. Thanks.

The following has always bugged me.

I switch back and forth between FFP and IE.
When I browse from home I use a modem so I have Images/Show Pictures turn OFF so I can browse faster.

When I'm using FFP all is as it should be, no images at all.
But when I use IE(6) the Banner at the top of the screen (PortableApps.com Your digital ...) and many of the logos for the apps DO appear!

Submitted by Ed_P on February 19, 2007 - 9:30am

General comments about my recent experience:

1. WOW!!! This thing is unbelievable!!!

2. The initial loading/install window indicates that the process may take up to 15 minutes;
a. it should note that it may take that long before the status bar begins to move/display!
b. what the heck is it doing that takes so long!!!! Holy cow!!

3. The version of Firefox in the suite is not current.

4. The version of Clamwin in the suite is not current.

Not Running Well under "Program Files" + Restircted User

Submitted by claws on February 19, 2007 - 8:52am

The portable apps don't work very well with restricted users.

My configuraiton is as below:

WindowsXP Home Edition
PortableApps all installed in C:\Program Files

Portable applications (such as Writer) failed to close when it was launched by a non-administrator user.

This doesn't happen to administrator user. What is the cause ?

This also doesn't happen when the files are installed somewhere other than C:\Program Files

Does anyone has a solution ?
Thanks!
