General discussions of portable apps and news.
Friends.......!
For those of you who have a portable with more than one .exe file but do not want the extras to show up on the menu -regular or beta- simply change the extension to .ex_ which tells windows that it is a compressed .exe and will automatically decompress the file when it is called up. -might not work on all programs, but its a start.
I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to manage which exe files show up in the launcher menu. Some apps have multiple EXE's but you only need to start with one. The others are for the apps to use depending on a feature you'd like to use. I didn't create the apps so no jokes about why an app is written that way
any thoughts?
Thanks,
Mistertech
What is the preferred process for switching to a new flash drive? Do I simply copy the entire contents of one to the other, or should I do a backup of the current drive and then restore to the new drive? Thanks.
No,
I am unable to install the program. I recently had to purchase a new USB drive, the old one had bad sectors an kept giving me write protection errors. I re-downloaded the full suite, as well as Firefox portable, and attempted to install them. I get a DOS box for less than a second, and the process terminates. There are no dialogue boxes or error messages.
I truly enjoyed the portability, and privacy, and want to be able to use the entire suite again. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and does anyone have a solution?
Thanks to all for a great product!
Just got Firefox portable and fired it up, only to find it connects to various websites and services I have no intention of connecting to.
Why does Firefox portable connect to "portableapps.com, the BBC for RSS and various other places".
There is also no way to disable the RSS feed, so every time you startup the new firefox it connects to the web to tell some server you've just started up, this is not a nice feature.
I miss the old days where I would frequently visit portableapps.com to see which new versions of apps had been released. Now, it's nothing but PortableApps Suite. The page is essentially static.
I understand John's reason for doing this - it was the excitement generated by the Popular Science article and other news about the new suite.
I hope that someday John will go back to the old format so we can follow app releases.
I have been a faithful user of portable apps for a while now, and I really like the idea. However, Notepad++PE, Sudoku portable, filezilla portable and 7-zip portable just stopped working. it works if I just run the actual program app/ it works. So it means there is something wrong with the NSI launcher. has this been reported before or is this a first? also, Is there a fix?
John, Ryan et al,
I have a question for you about ongoing maintenance of Portable Apps. I'm thankful for the work you've done and I'm not trying to pressure you for new releases, but I'm starting to realize that most apps are updated frequently, perhaps more frequently than you have the manpower to support, as volunteers. Already, we have OO.o at 2.1, Gimp 2.4 coming soon, maybe others that I'm not aware of. I understand John has had lots more important stuff going on in his personal life, I guess my point could be summarized "What happens if John gets hit by a bus?"
