Update on Spam Levels and Mollom (November 16, 2012)

As some folks have noticed, we have been experiencing a dramatic rise in spam. Even with captchas for registrations and email confirmations before posting, we have days when the number of spam messages attempting to be made reaches 3,000. To fight this, we've been using Mollom as an antispam service. It has been keeping 95-99% of those messages from being posted at all, but several each day will still get through and need to be manually moderated. Additionally, some users have been stuck needing to solve a captcha or having to alter a link to be able to post their messages.

Installing Win portable apps from my Mac on my USB

Submitted by iArnold on November 14, 2012 - 9:34am

Hallo all,

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I didn't find the discussion.
I have this problem.
At home I work on a Mac.
But at work there are Windows workstations.
I am allowed to run apps from my USB but writing to the stick requires encryption, which I do not want because the encryption program only works on Windows.

The portable firefox I am using is outdated by now and I want to have a new version but installing it at work is not an option for the stated reason.

At home I have NO windows machine, not even on VM.

PA's Folder Structure

Submitted by JKB 101 on November 13, 2012 - 11:43pm

Every PortableApp seems to be
organized into
3 subfolders
(App, Data, & Other).

Is it correct to assume that
PA puts
all (or most) of
the original program
(even original user data folders) into
the App folder, & then
redirects all (or most) user data into
the Data folder ?

Is this wrong, or much too simplistic ?

I am simply trying to grasp the way it works.

For example,
in some apps,
such as GIMP,
if you need to manually add some things (eg: brushes),
you need to know the correct (or best) folder
to put them in -

Program for quickly registering right click menu shell extensions and file extension associations?

Submitted by ArmoredDragoon on November 9, 2012 - 8:09pm

A lot of the available apps have functionality in the full versions that aren't present without an installer, namely shell extensions and file associations.

Is there any kind of program that automatically adds them based on the apps you have installed? I know they can't be added by the portableapps platform, but I figure they could be added by a separate program that can request elevation, store the existing settings, change to fit the portable apps, and revert them when you're finished.
