Sunday, May 25 - platform stops working

Submitted by dve on May 25, 2014 - 10:35pm

Using Portable Firefox without incident until tonight. Windows 7 PC. Suddenly, PortFirefox cannot connect to any webpage - exactly as if Internet connection is gone. But it is not. All other computer programs are working/connecting, and non-portable (pc desktop) version of Firefox connects just fine. I back out to platform level and ask Portable Apps to look for updates -- it cannot find internet either. A window pops up to report:
"Unable to connect to PortableApps.com to retrieve portable apps. Please try again later. [SendRequest Error]

Hello!

A Right Click to the System Tray Icon should be able to depict the "About" option against the listed menu in order for the end User to have a single glimpse view of the installed Version of PA Platform!?

Both Left & Right Clicks are not able to portray any option to disseminate the "Version Number" information of the installed platform.

Nevertheless, How to check the same....Pls guide!

Backup needs one more option

Submitted by dlwatib on May 18, 2014 - 2:51am

I use PortableApps to install apps on my hard drive (C:). I wanted to backup my installed apps, so I tried to use the Complete option since the App Data and Documents option do not include the apps themselves.

This did not work. The backup hung and I had to use the task manager to kill it. The Complete option tried to backup my entire C drive, not just the C:\Portable directory. Apparently it hung waiting to open a file that Windows would not let it open.

PortableApps needs to support undo for application updates

Submitted by dlwatib on May 18, 2014 - 2:29am

Once again, I was dismayed by changes to Firefox when I used PortableApps to update from Firefox 28 to 29. There are never any warnings about what the new version of Firefox is going to break, you just have to hope that you can find enough new or revised add-ons to make it still usable, or switch to Chrome or IE. But Firefox isn't the only portable application that is fragile and frequently "breaks" (i.e. no longer does exactly what you want it to) when a new update is installed.

How about RunLocally but still copy back data?

Programs with databases and/or cache like FirefoxPortable and SkypePortable always run in the background and thus constantly write to the USB Flash Drive/Cloud.

I know it's needed for true portability, but is it worth the price? What's wrong with, say, copy the database/cache into %temp% and move it back once the program gets closed? Just like someone once asked specifically for Firefox.
