Portable Web Apps and Windows Firewall

Submitted by NetPortable on May 25, 2023 - 8:11am

Does anyone know why portable web applications fail to resolve the web at all when Windows firewall is set to default block policy, despite app allows in firewall rules?

Having given web apps like Firefox wide allows in firewall, setting default policy to block instantly fails them.
I have also tried forcing Firefox to use local wireless network DNS with continued failure. Windows native applications do not fail in this way, and I cannot understand why.

Portable App Installer not getting past category, quits

Submitted by 2gdismore on May 25, 2023 - 12:27am

Hi all,

I was using both the NISI and the PortableApps Installer app to make some portables for some apps I use. Once the category section came I wrote “Development” not in quotes and then the PortableApps Installer quit on me. I can’t get any further. I presume it’s a bug? If I’m doing something wrong let me know otherwise.

CCleaner

I can't get the latest version of CCleaner to download/update. It gives an error message. It says the download is incomplete or corrupt... Any idea what's wrong?

Confusion setting up certain apps

Submitted by nolanoro on May 13, 2023 - 1:31pm

I have a couple issues.

First, in general, how do I determine which executable to use?

In particular, an example would be KeePassProPortable. On my N:\partition, should it be

"N:\PortableApps.com Platform\PortableApps\KeePassProPortable\KeePassProPortable.exe

or

N:\PortableApps.com Platform\PortableApps\KeePassProPortable\App\KeePassPro\KeePass.exe

PC change from 32-bit to 64-bit

Submitted by Sandrito on May 10, 2023 - 7:48am

I am switching from my old 32-bit PC to a new 64-bit PC. I am using PortableApps on a USB stick. What do I have to pay attention to so that the existing programmes run on 64-bit?
I have read: Firefox Portable is a dual-mode 32-bit and 64-bit app, ensuring Firefox runs as fast as possible on every PC. Is it true that Firefox starts in the 64-bit version when I use my USB stick on my new 64-bit PC? Are most programs in dual-mode and then start in 64-bit mode?

Making updates faster

I've discovered that updating by entering d:\start.exe is faster than d:, then start.exe - I presume by saving the installers on the hard disk.
But I have some suggestions. We all are using computers with multiple CPUs and threads. Let's take advantage of them.
1) always use the system's temp directory to store installs, no matter in what context you start updating.
2) start ALL the downloads in parallel, at a low priority? This will lessen the peak load on the app sources while keeping out of the way of any ongoing other network activity like surfing or email.

Malwarebytes reports this as anomalous

Submitted by jimmy42 on April 26, 2023 - 11:18pm

I have been told Malwarebytes that the "start.exe" has malware.
The description is "MachineLearning/Anomalous97%"
It quarantines "start.exe" immediately.
Malwarebytes has been informed on this.

I found tree instances of the word "anomalous" they were about programs not "start.exe."
John T Haller, I have been with you since the beginning, don't let me down.

PortableApps Corrupted and Start EXE Deleted

Submitted by Dorcupi on April 18, 2023 - 7:48pm

My computer ended up putting a fake error on my usb which ended up closing all the apps and the platform itself. I then tried to relaunch the platform but it would not launch. Then I tried upgrading it with the installer, which also did not work. I then tried to do it again, but deleting the Start EXE beforehand but now the updater won't even recognize it as a usb with PortableApps installed. Now, I'm stuck with all my data unrecoverable. Please help.

It will funktion the way I imagine?

Hello PortableApps community!

I want to install PortableApps Platform on a separate SSD from the OS one and install on the same SSD, the Apps I use and find in "Portable" format.
My question is, what will happen if I need to reinstall OS, will stay the apps saved and ready to go?
Even if apps are installed on intern SSD do they need to be manually closed before Sleep/Restart/Shutdown?
The most I'm thinking of, do portable Apps have the same performance as installed apps?
Hope my questions are not that stupid. Hope someone can help me. Thanks!

Unable to reply to post

Hi, John was helping me out on a recent post however I am no longer able to reply... I can preview the message fine, but whenever I try and then post ("save") it I keep getting an error saying: "The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later."

I've tried posting a markdown, html and plain text, and replying to both his comment and to the post overall but no joy -- Is anyone able to advise please?

Thanks, Martin
