give/sell branded usb key

Submitted by lauraingiro on June 19, 2009 - 5:10am

hello,
i have been asked by my chief in my departement (university) to create a sponsored pendrive with portable apps. the usb key will be branded with the university logo and given for free during meetings etc. maybe in future they could be sold in the university shop. He also asked to personalize the logo (icons), homepage of firefox etc with university logo etc...
Can i do this with portable apps suite? it look like gpl allow it, but i didnt understand what to do with portable apps logo: i will for sure give credits to portable apps, but can i change logos, icons and so on?

Virus infection on USB devices - questions for a tech person (2)

Submitted by nomnex on June 13, 2009 - 11:00pm

Not to offend anyone, but I rather tech people answer this thread only to preserve the informative value of this post. Others can benefit of this information. Thank you.

Purpose of this thread: safe usage and prevention of a USB stick's content - soft/documents - when used in Internet Coffee shops and on companies networked computers (no policy on external devices here, and admin right on the networks).

In fact it is a board question and I don't even know how to formulate it, but:

How do I get infected
How do I see when I get infected

USB Drive Comparisons

Submitted by tlchost on June 13, 2009 - 3:00pm

I managed to destroy my USB drive, and someone gave me a 32 gig unit. At first I was thrilled, until I tryed copying my stuff to it....The write speed would place it last in a geriatric turtle race.

Is/are there site(s) that have comparisons of various USB drives relative to read/write speeds?

Thanks

Thom

USB Stick BUFFALO (JP) - Question for a tech person

Submitted by nomnex on June 13, 2009 - 3:57am

I need a new stick. It is not much about the price, but the usability/reliability/longevity/transfer speed. It is a Buffalo USB 2, Japanese model, either 8GB, either 16GB. What do you think? I would tend to select the 16 GB.

30 MB/s data transfert / 8 GB / 4000 JPY

or

30 MB/s data transfer / 16GB / 7500 JPY

http://buffalo.jp/products/catalog/flash/ruf2-lvs-bk/ (30 MB/s)

Q1: is the life span of a USB shorter than a HD?
Q2: does the size make any difference about reliability or longevity?

Has the PortableApps.com Website Been Compromised?

Submitted by Bulldog on June 12, 2009 - 11:37pm

The first hint of trouble came when I tried to download an app from the PortableApps.com website. After clicking on the 'Download' button I was redirected to a webpage for unrelated software. I closed my browser and tried again. This time, when I clicked on the 'Download' button I was redirected to a webpage for a different unrelated software package. There was a link to SourceForge on the page, and when I clicked on it, my download started but was immediately cut off by my security software.

Therefore, my question: Is there a problem with the PortableApps.com website?
