Indication for live installers in PortableApps.com Format (aka installers that download things)

I'm working on an indicator of live installers for those who don't like such things and was thinking of having them end in live.paf.exe instead of just paf.exe. Do people think this is sufficient to let people know? Do most people care?

Please post your thoughts on it so we can nail this down for the 1.0 release.

Install PortablesApps on (internal) D drive

Submitted by SandLake on July 14, 2009 - 6:34am

Is it possible to install the PortableApps platform onto a regular internal hard disk, I like the way it ring fences it's applications from the host PC and I would like to run it on my netbook without it leaving a trail on the actual netbook and I'm guessing it would run faster than from a memory stick?

Thanks

Not exactly PortableApps.com standard, but it will do...

I'm trying to make my own collection of programs whose folder structure is compatible with the PortableApps.com Platform folder architecture.

FOR EXAMPLE:
For Firefox 3 Portable,

[DRIVE LETTER]:\
|

|___PortableApps\
|

|___FirefoxPortable\

The PortableApps Menu lists any EXE files located in the sub-folders directly within the PortableApps folder.

I've used programs from a USB drive that were not meant to be portable,

Virus related questions....

Submitted by mrhobbeys on July 11, 2009 - 6:42pm

I installed the clamwin on my portableapps USB and things were good until I found that my computer has a virus that comes with a program I use with poker. I had to pay for the program so I don't want to delete it, but do I have any other options??

Please help I have other questions related to this same thing but I don't know where to start....

Sorry if this is old news, but it's new to me, and as such congratulations to y'all are in order on two counts.

One, a commercial program is available in PAF as well as U3 format for portability, UltraEdit. I'll stick with the free and open source Notepad++, thank you very much, but it's great to see someone outside the open source circle throwing some weight behind PAF as opposed to or in addition to U3.

Python as a common app?

Submitted by Nick Ring on July 8, 2009 - 4:08pm

Hi,

It seems that Python is used more and more in applications (in general) and I have noticed that more portable applicatons use Python. Instead of having multiple copies of Python 'install' on the USB key (and taking up space), has anyonw thought of having Python as a 'common' application (like what has been to Java)? Is this possible?

Cheers,
Nick

How can I be sure an app is not leaving stuff in my registry ?

Submitted by billyMass on July 8, 2009 - 1:41pm

hi

there's a lot of portable apps out there (not only in this site)...or so they claim to be.

one time after downloading and running a "portable" app from some other site (i think it was a .pdf reader) I closed the app, run regedit and searched for junk by the app's name.
I found some entries and I don't mean the "MRU" list.
I saw things in context menu...associated file types... that's NOT suppose to happen with a portable app !
that made me think: is there a way to make sure an app is not leaving stuff in my registry even though it calls itself "portable" ?

Billy Mays Caps Lock 1.0 - Turn your Caps Lock key into a Billy Mays key

I created a fun little utility that turns your Caps Lock key into a Billy Mays key. When you run it, a little Billy Mays icon appears in the system tray. Whenever you hit Caps Lock, you'll hear Billy Mays say one of his famous phrases ("Hi, Billy Mays here", "order right now and we'll double the value", etc). Just something quick and fun that I hope will make people smile. It's under 1MB and available for local install into Windows and in PortableApps.com Format.
